Time for another round of 'FieryBirdyThing asks technical questions that prove she likely shouldn't be playing this game, at all'.
I'm a little bit confused about the correlation between .att files and .c16 files in C3. As I believe I understand it, .c16 files are sprites and .att files are the connections between the sprites (how they connect to form a creature).
I'm also given to understand that the file naming convention between them is the same (body part, gender + species, age, breed slot).
Should the .att files be completely one-to-one with the .c16 files? That is, for every single .c16 file relating to a Norn/Grendel/Ettin, there is an .att file.

Yes, that pretty much sums it up. The att or body data files contain X/Y coordinates that tell the game where the connections of the sprites are. To put a head onto a neck for example, it goes into the head's att file and reads the coordinates for the neck pivot.
Then it goes into the chest att file and checks for it's neck position.
In the final step, the game simply lines up those two pixels.
Not sure if there is a fallback system to use default body data files, but generally speaking there should be one att for each sprite file.
And nothing wrong asking technical questions, that's how you learn this stuff

You don't need an .att file for every .c16 file, old creatures usually have slightly desaturated sprites but still use the same connection points as their adult counterparts, so there's no need to make new .atts for them, they will continue to use the adult body data. Female creatures will also usually use the .att data of their male counterparts so unless there is a lot of sexual dimorphism they don't need their own body data either.

Thank you so much for the clarification, Dragoler. I did suspect that to be the case, but wanted to double-check before I freaked out and did something drastic.
And thank you for the reassurance, as well, Papriko.
