Getting C2 to work on Win10 | |

Hello all!
Three years ago, I had Creatures 2 working on my computer, and I was quite a prolific Wolfing Run poster. Now, the dark times have come.
In a world, where Creatures 2 doesn't work on my computer, only one forum could save the day...
Here's a screenshot of the error I receive that crashes it out upon loading.

In my experience that dialog box in your screenie is triggered by many different failures. I run GOG C2 in a VM that uses WinXP and I see that dialog from time-to-time on an otherwise stable platform.
The "problem" with C2--and ancient game software in general--is that it plays fast and loose with the (assumed) underlying hardware in an attempt at creating the best player experience. Contemporary operating systems typically don't support or allow the tricks that 90's programmers got up to.
One solution is to run an old operating system on emulated hardware. This is not really viable for the casual computer user. Another solution is to employ a shim that translates what the game wants into terms that the contemporary operating system understand and allows.
I don't use Windows but have read elsewhere in the Caves forums that Win10 users have success with a DirectX shim by Elisha Riedlinger. See, for example, https://creaturescaves.com/forum.php?view=2&thread=7382.
One caveat: GimmeCat recently reported that Elisha's shim breaks Wolf Control. As a Wolfling Master, this might cramp your style a bit.

I went looking for the post where GimmeCat talked about Elisha's shim. Found it:

I was mistaken about Wolf Control. It's Wolfling Monitor that GimmeCat tells us does not work using this shim.

Thanks dingus! (Haha)
I appreciate the speedy reply. I do employ Wolfing Monitor, so I will be attempting a virtual machine first. Wolf Control has never worked for me anyway.
Thank you again.
Edit: So I lied: I did attempt the fix first. It didn't work.
I will try a full reinstallation next.
Edit Edit: A full reinstallation gave me a different error message:

Edit Edit Edit: Using the fix AND a full reinstallation finally fixed the issue.

Sorry to jump in on this post but I'm hoping someone can help rather than creating a whole new thread. I fixed my issue with dropdown menus not working and stuff previously and after reinstalling and using the DXWrapper fix enjoyed a blissful couple of hours playing Creatures 2 last night.
Tried to load it up this morning and I just get the first error that TheDrunkenNorn posted.
I don't know if a virtual machine is an option for me because I think I'd be a bit out of my depth setting it up. And also, it was working yesterday. Why is it doing this to me? Whyyyyyyy?
Help?
Edit: Managed to actually get the game open and running in Windows 7 Compatibility mode but the hand goes invisible and flickers. Which it wasn't doing last night when I got it functioning without using the compatibility mode. Honestly how and when it works seems to be random. Any ideas for fixing the hand flicker?
Edit 2: Exported a creature. Program just closed. Literally no idea what it is doing anymore. |
