C1 Health Kit in GOG version not working | |

So truth be told I haven't played Creatures in absolutely ages. The reason? Whenever I try to click on the health kit in Creatures 1 it comes up with an error message saying, ironically, "No error message available.". I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but to no available. This never happened when I had a physical copy, which I don't know if I still do and even if I did it probably wouldn't work with Windows 7 and I have no idea what causes it. If anyone could help I'd be grateful, as I'd truly love to finally get back into the series.

Luckily, this seems to be a pretty common issue that should be easily resolved! This topic at GOG.com has the original help (provided by the lovely Laura) but basically it should work if you run the game as an administrator. Hopefully that solves the problem so you can enjoy it! If not, post away and I'm sure we'll be on the trail of another solution soon!

Haha! It was a success! Could I get a sticky for this or merge it with another topic and get that stickied? It seems to be a fairly common problem and the solution works on both Vista and 7. The only thing is that the Norns I had seem to have mysteriously disappeared, although fortunately I hadn't got very far nor played for ages so it doesn't really matter. I'm not the admin on the system, though I know the password so would that be the reason?

Maybe we need a topic in the Help forum with a bunch of common problems & solutions. Or do we already have a resource article along that line? Might not be a bad idea to put one together here, though, since I think most people stop on the forum first before digging any deeper. I'll definitely look into it!
Hmm, the only possibility I'm thinking about the missing Norns is that the game was using a different folder to ruse when it wasn't being run as an administrator. I don't know if you have access, but you might search through My Documents for a Creatures folder that should have your world. There is also likely a similar folder setup somewhere in Program Files. See if the dates of the world.sfc file match up with your old world. I know it's not much help... But maybe it will at least be a start!

Possibly... You can actually avoid almost all win7/vista security related problems by installing both games to
My Documents\Creatures
Instead of the default locations that are like:
program files(x86)\GOG.Com\Creatures Exodus
program files(x86)\GOG.Com\Creatures Albian Years
Just make sure both games are installed directly into to that SAME 'My documents\Creatures' folder, don't leave the 'creatures exodus' or 'creatures albian years' part (the installs already make internal folders inside the installation folder for each game, like C1, C2, C3, DS... so when you are done with both installs, you should have folders in my documents like this):
My Documents\Creatures\Creatures 1
My Documents\Creatures\Creatures 2
My Documents\Creatures\Creatures 3
My Documents\Creatures\Docking Station
These folders correspond to the place the games save things in your documents already... So you really should have no more problems with anything involving the security, writing files, extracting/installing agents, or hidden/inacessible files...
If you leave them installed in the default location, sometimes you will also notice errors installing agents that will require you to copy files from your documents to the program folders (and other things can act a bit screwy too depending on the rights the program and user has, like files not showing up or being accessible... as I found out last night when the genetics editor was able to edit and save some genomes in programs folder, but then nothing i did could make them show up in explorer so I could zip them up and send them to someone, I just saw old versions in that same folder... and I AM admin on this machine... I ended up having to re-open them in the genetics editor and save them outside the program folder onto my desktop for the operating system to see them... it sounds like you may be experiencing something similar with your norns or world files, since you are now using a different user access)

Thanks for the help but, with permission, I changed myself to the administrator and the Norns came back. However, considering what evolnemesis said, would it be a good idea to uninstall the games and reinstall them to My Documents anyway?

It should ensure you have no more problems at all... really makes it run without hiccups, and everything should just work after that... the GOG versions essentially are getting around the win7/vista security by recreating most of the games' folders in your documents folder and copying a lot of the game files in there anyway.

It might be worth it to look into getting the Remastered Patch as well. That fixes a lot of problems, too.

Definitely get the patch if you haven't done so already, as Kezune suggested. It's a must have for all the remastered Creatures games, and any third-party addons. Anything to help things run more smoothly, I say! |

Uh... how do I install it to my documents? Like, from "Creatures Albian Years Setup". I'm really grateful for all the help you've given me so far, so thanks, but I don't know how to install it to My Documents. By the way, since I'm using Windows 7 would it be Documents or My Documents?

Are you referring to the remastered patch? You just need to run it once, and your games will be updated.
If this in regards to the C1 Genetics Kit, I have it in my Program Files, and I installed it ages ago. Does running the .exe file give you the option to choose an install location, or does the program run directly from the .exe? If it's the latter, you can just move the downloaded file into the correct directory. I have Windows 7, and have things installed under Username\Documents.

Yeah it would be Username\Documents... Documents and My documents are really the same... newer versions of windows are a bit screwy that way, because they use symbolic links to folders... To Windows, your documents folder is really still "\Documents and Settings\*Username*\My Documents", just like it was in XP and earlier versions, but in Win7 a user can only really reference that folder as "\Users\*Username*\Documents", which is really just a link that points to the same place.
As for installing the games there, there should be an option to change install location somewhere in the advanced options during install. If not, just copying the program folders into the folders in documents, and then running the programs from there MIGHT work, but I'm not sure about that...

For myself above soluttions didn't do anything on win10, but I found out another new solution for the gog version on win10 to get the health kit working again (after much fiddling with it's files) Do the following change the filename of "Health Kit.exe" to "HealthKit.exe"
then go and find the file name Applets in the same directory (the c1 default directory where also the health kit file is)
Open it with notepad(++) or any other simple texteditor, change in it the word Health Kit to just one word HealthKit, save and close.
Now launch c1 and your healthkit is again working in full glory! |
