OpenC2E Version 0.2Today, the folks over at Openc2e would like to announce a new major milestone release of the OpenC2E engine! Designed to recreate and re-implement the engines of Creatures 1 to Creatures 3, it has been long in the works!

The new version can be found on the Github. People interested (such as C++ programmers) in helping the project should contact the lovely people at the Caos Coding Cave Discord for further details!

I've had a look at this from time to time, through the years, and I just can't figure out what it actually is.

What does this do? Is it simply a way to run the games without all the strange problems that come with running C1 and C2 on new operating systems?

The fans try to completely recreate the engine of the games themselves. On one hand yes, this would, in theory, allow you to run the games much more easily on modern systems.

Other things this would entail is fixing long lasting bugs that go much deeper than the cosfiles, properly implementing features that were never finished, adding completely new features, and the ability to make massive overhaul mods in the scale of creating new physics or completely unique creatures-like games.
Or for example a new, different online system than DS without having to jack into it's memory. You could just add it natively to the game.

It's essentially a whole new set of games that just so happen to exactly look, feel and play like creatures 1-3.

I've tried this out and it is a great thing. It makes C3/DS run literally 10x faster. From 100 fps in fast ticks mode to 1000 or Way Too Fast as reported by the built-in Wolf Control.

That just goes to show how far modern hardware has come up since the release of even DS.

Just one question though: Will OpenC2E have better macro exception handling in C2? For me those are the number one world killers, macro exception errors by misbehaving objects.
