The latest news of the Creatures 1 background models being put up for auction has prompted Steve Grand, the 'Digital God' himself, to send our community this message: Hi Laurence, hi everybody! Wow! I'd have bought them years ago if I'd been given the opportunity (come to that, I'd have bought the rights to Creatures if they hadn't been sold to Gameware behind closed doors). But unfortunately I live the wrong side of the Atlantic now, too, and there's no space in my apartment. Also, it would grieve me to give as much as a cent to Gameware, even to save those. I do still own the hot air balloon that nobody let me include in Creatures 1 (it was my favourite thing, too!), and one of the tiny clay models I made to show CL how we could make the backdrop (I think Gameware may have the other), but just lately I've had to let go of quite a bit of my past - I don't even have Lucy, my robot, any more (long story) - so 12 feet of display case would be too much nostalgia to hang on to! While I have you all here, though, you might be interested to know that I've recently started work on a new Creatures-like simulation. It's getting on for 20 years since I started C1, so I figure it's about time I made use of everything I've learned since then! Nobody else seems to have filled the gap. That's quite a find, Laura! Thank you for sharing. And it offers some very interesting insight, too; not all of it encouraging (what's up with his relationship with GW?) but some of it very exciting. I'm *definitely* interested in that new program he mentioned, and I've already bookmarked his blog. You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there. -- Jim Adkins |

That's very exciting to hear from Steve Grand! I found his blog a few weeks ago and forgot to bookmark it, so thanks for posting the link! His next simulation sounds exciting: I consider him to be the heart and soul behind Creatures, and I think things would have panned out very differently had he gotten the rights to the game. C'est la vie! I hope he still looks back at the game fondly and sees that his work and vision continue to live on through the community. I find it funny that he mentioned how our kids would be the interested ones in his Creatures-like simulation. I could be in my 80s and I'd still be interested in anything related to Creatures! Ha ha! |

Just remember, Steve wanted norns to look like awkward chicken things. Sometimes marketing knows best! ;-) The history of Creatures is a long and complicated topic. Even in bullet points, the rise and fall of CL takes up a page. Those wondering about Steve's relationship towards what's now GW should read the end of this page for insight. (You should have a look at the links, too!) I think he has rightly moved on from what he was doing back in the 1990s, and I hope he can achieve something equally fantastic this decade. Those wondering about Steve's relationship towards what's now GW should read the end of this page for insight. (You should have a look at the links, too!) I'm actually quite familiar with that page. For some reason I didn't immediately make the connection the other day that the bad blood between him and GW was probably because so many of the GW employees used to work for CL (duh *facepalm*)  And I liked the awkward chicken things. :c You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. There's this cardboard cutout that I pulled from someone's web site (Grand's?) ages ago, so I unfortunately don't have the source link:  It kind of reminds me of a muppet. =P You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing.
