Creatures fan game in a different genre?

This was being discussed on Discord in response to the broken, microtransaction-riddled "Creatures Alchemist". How about making a community sourced small game that is not actually an attempt at re-creating the whole complexity of artificial life?

We certainly do have the programmers and artists. I know enough of Unity and 3d software to put things together myself, though I'm a very, very junior programmer.

I'm going to ballpark a few wild ideas, and maybe we can brainstorm up something that gets a few people's interest. Please contribute with your own, even if they're silly.

-A full on 3D platformer, in the Spyro/Yooka-Laylee style. Pros are it's fairly easy to create cartoony assets and put toghether levels in unity with minimal programming, it's what the engine's made for. It's also very scalable, it could release one level at a time and still be playable. Cons, it's not very interesting and it's hard to make a control scheme that feels good.

-A tycoon game, like those aquarium games where you set up a 2d space for creatures to walk up and down and breed, and then you sell them in a little shop and try to acquire new breeds and decorations. Pros: It's very creatures-y. People could mod their own backgrounds and breeds. You could give creatures a corresponding text code that encodes their genetics and let people exchange them online. Cons: the tycoon side's a lot of the sort of programming I'm not familiar with, with arrays and tables of values and prices, so we'd need a decent, committed c# programmer for this one.

-A dating sim, set on the ark. Try and find love as a norn, choosing between various well-developed characters, as a plot unfolds involving strange machinery and mysterious countdowns (where is the ship going?). Pros, it could be hilarious, and cute. community writers could contribute a lot, and so could 2D artists who could make nice illustrations rather than boring textures or sprites. Fairly easy on the programming side, though there might be a more logical engine choice than Unity for this one. Cons: there's so few of us we'd probably all know the plot and secrets by the time it's done, not sure who would get to actually *enjoy* it.

I always thought that a town simulation would lend to creatures well. Periodic raids from grendels, having to befriend the ettins to get to the next tech level. That sort of thing.

The first thing that came to mind was one of those walking simulators, exploring a world as a Norn, Ettin, Grendel, perhaps with custom content. Which then led to a fairly different idea.

A virtual world kind of game, similar to early 2000s Second Life, or Active Worlds (or even Roblox I guess). You design your own world, in 3D, you can explore others' worlds, meet and chat with people, as your own Creature. There's plenty of space for interaction, for minigames, socializing and creativity. Needless to say it would fit excellently with the series as it is while still being a kind of spinoff.
On the contrary, the audience is limited, it'll probably end up as a deserted wasteland quickly enough, content moderation, the whole ordeal of hosting a server, etc.

Ooh these all sound so cool! I'm sadly garbage at making sprites so I can't help too much with anything other than 2D art. I think the "tycoon" style game and the "town simulation" ones both sound like a lot of fun, especially if events are randomized so it's different every time you play it.

I love Nornbreeder's idea, a "they are billions"/age of empires thing, I adore city building and RTS type things, though that's another one I'd have to cede all programming efforts on, AI and pathfinding are like, the opposite of my forte.

@Reed, why didn't I think of it in this thread, I've even tried to make an "Albia, the adventure map" in Minecraft long ago, where you'd discover the Lone Shee's lab, read various journals, and finally find out how the planet came to be. I think I could do everything about that alone except for the sheer amount of time it would take, so if people like this idea and keep contributing and supporting it, I can pretty much guarantee it would get done!

Ad far as a game where you can explore eachother's worlds, I think it would make sense to just get on VRChat (or *shudder* Furcadia.) Online games are a pretty huge deal to make and especially to maintain, just imagine the moderation effort. I'd say we have next to 0 chance to make this a game (funny, you went from 100% to 0%, lol)

i think a 3d adventure/platformer game would be cool!
maybe it could even be a collectathon, although my only ideas for a creatures version of that is basically just a spyro ripoff

A 3D platformer idea sounds really good. Maybe it could be in the same style as the Oddworld series where it is based more around exploration than collecting things?

I have no experience with making games, but if we do decide on something, I want to help! I could write or help come up with ideas, depending on the type of game. or whatever I could be useful for. Personally I think a fan game would be a great idea, especially something accessible and interesting to people who don't know about creatures.

I just remembered this game I played last year called "Leaves: the Journey" that had me wishing for a similar thing set on Albia. it's a sort of light point and click mostly involving separate little puzzles rather than the usual "walk all over collecting items to rub toghether."

It works rather well with the first idea proposed by @ReedReith, as a sort of "Myst-like" exploration slash puzzle game. Just imagine figuring out ancient shee temple locks, and powering up abandoned underground machinery... the 3D movement might look like this . (Just way more chill puzzles like Leaves, and not terrifying math puzzled like Myst, lol)

Seems like the "exploration" idea is leading right now, whether it's "jumping skill" based, or puzzle based.

I remember waaay back someone on the german community made a little Creatures-inspired 3D game, but it was very simple and didn't relate much the original at all except for the fact that you played as a norn XD

The ideas that you've collected so far are really neat! I personally love the dating sim concept, since I'm a sucker for those story-based comedy games ^^ The Renpy engine might be a good choice for that. I've played around with it recently, since I was planning to make a little game with it myself, and I would be willing to make background or character sprites for that kind of game :)

Very interesting so far :) a jump and run game combined with a puzzle sounds very nice. Would the player create their own norn for the game or would it be a fix main character? Would their be npcs or not?
I can actually imagine an rpg as well combined to be honest.

Try to think of similar games that cost 5 to 10 dollars, not 30 or 40. The objective of this initiative is to plan a project we could actually finish. Maybe if it goes well it could have a larger sequel later.

>a jump and run game combined with a puzzle sounds very nice.

To keep the scope plausible, it would have to be the one or the other, a jump and run game might have simple "find the lever to open the gate" puzzles of the sort that Zelda, Breath of the Wild has, but we'd already have our hands full creating solid controls and mapping out levels. Besides you wouldn't want to hamper the pace of a platformer by throwing in "sliding tiles" or "connecting wires" puzzles.

Same goes for the character creation, You could pick your name, easy, maybe we could get away with multiple re-textures for different norn breeds, but it would be an absurd amount of work to add alternative models for different races.

Anyway, don't want to stop the creativity, so just keep the ideas coming even if you don't know how much effort it would be. Just try not to scare me too much XD

What about an "escape room" game? it could be set in a single room, like, say, the music temple, or the DS comms room and aside from the puzzles, it could have bits of written lore and art hidden around it. It would make for a nice prototype for an eventual bigger game.

A few suggestions:

1. A Tamagotchi-style game but with norns - raising them, looking after them, breeding them. It could even have simple genetics (perhaps just appearance "genes";) as a nod to the genetics angle of Creatures.

2. An ecosystem sim - where you can control temperatures, plant seeds, spawn animals, and see what happens. Wouldn't have norns, necessarily - but could have all the other flora and fauna that people love from the Creatures games.

We already have a game like this! :) Check out the "Creatchi" section of Creatures Caves.
