Oh, man, I am loving these. I've always been a sucker for bright greens and the purple of the female works with it so well!

Maybe the inner ear should be the tan of the cheeks?

Ahh yes you're right Malkin. Surprised I didn't notice that myself. o.o

As for the glossy look, it helps with definition after the sprites are down sized. The male's side head was also the first piece I made and it's pretty flat looking compared to the rest of the body and front head sprites.

Heard back from my niece and she likes "all of the head and the colours" and her favourite emotion for the boy is the happy smile. :)

Wow, that's a really nice way to go! I'd line out the hair a little more, so that it contrasts better against the skin, and perhaps let the spike ends and the blue areas in the snake-like patter be purple. And purple/pink finger- and toenails. Slightly smaller tail spikes, perhaps, to match the size of the head spikes better. Regardless, she's really nice looking!

I'm with Bifrost, a hint of pink and/or purple on the body would look nice. Not too much though, the snake-like pattern would be a good place for it.

Looks cute! I see the C1 classic feminin eyelahes do make a return : D
The colors is quite nice - didn't expec it to be pink and purples.
i goes nicely togheter with the white..cloudlfuffy like hair(?) !
Only thing I wonder - no smaller cheek spines sticking out from her?
Like it does on the male but smaller that may cover a bit the (second..real?) ears on side ?
Not sure if I explained that good, hopeuly you know what I mean.

Also this is optional but if thats a nose (th blue black) - perhaps redish or pink would be something? Can otherwise keep the one you have,of course.

To me it feel a bit lacking only with the cheek spine missing, but eh - it's your'e breed and I do not like to tell a person to change theyre design to my liking,it's not my creation afterall. ;3
But as you said if you want suggestions, then I guess thats all from me.[ngrin]

I think what the other said was nice suggestions as well!

Looks awesome so far,Kule!
You do awesome progress!

Thanks everyone, all the suggestions have been really helpful!

About the jaw/cheek spine, Norngirl. They're missing because I made the ear first and it's angled away from the head amd larger than the males so would conflict with the spines. It was just a mock up so I'll try and add smaller stubs with the final and see how it looks.

Just popping in to gush at how pretty the female looks! I'm so jealous of the people who can play Creatures 1 and might get to have these guys in their game someday! *o*

Between my love of cookies, tea, and the observation of genetics in nature I'm practically a Shee.[ngrin]

Had a lot of trouble getting the hair to look good in game so I just ended up scrapping it completely. New female looks closer to the male now and the horns add contrast to the ears which was lacking with the white/pink hair. I like the original with hair as a concept but I just think this works overall.

Big change but hope you guys like it. Still need to work on it a bit and add constrast and definition but it's mostly done.

Lore reason for female having extra horns is for defense ;)

I would love to know more about the process you use to paint, if you ever have time. I'm trying to get in to digital art and these are absolutely beautiful.

I can put a tutorial together later but the quick and dirty way of explaining things is that I use flat colours for each part of the drawing and then use clipping layers on top for shading.

layers look something like this

-outline highlight
-outline shade
outline
-glare
-rim highlight (thin bright colour along edge of area in shadow)
-ambient light (coloured light bouncing between scenery and object)
-highlight
-shade
flat colour

after that you can go back and add additional layers for texture/detail

Also another good thing to remember is to try and use colours with higher saturation.. I don't know why but I always default to using pastel colours(see first female concept) and you end up with a flat picture. Pastle colours are nice but not if you're trying to make something look 3D

And a good tip is to keep flipping your image horizontally. I usually do this after every big save and it's because most people draw/paint with a slant and your eyes compensate for it so you don't notice.
The image can look really weird once you flip it but you'll end up with something that looks closer to what you imagined. I do this a lot during the sketch/concept phase so it's not difficult to fix later. It also helps you to see if your lighting works.

Some tips

Try not to use the colour picker(if it's not a solid colour), use the colour pallet and your eye instead.

Use layer masks instead of eraser and less destructive tools in general.

Limit your colours and make a swatch on your canvas

Don't paint on white, use a background colour to set the mood. Something soft like a dark grey is good for sketching. I sketch using white paint but use whatever.

If you're using photoshop start using the chalk brush, I use it 90% of the time and it's great for getting free texture in your work. It's an easy brush to get good at and get nice results. I think using the round brushes it's a lot less fun and you never get happy accidents.

Just some general thoughts and i'll try and put something better together at a different time. I'm still learning though and I look at some artists and can't fathom how they got so good but it's 90% practice and making mistakes is part of the process.

Just have fun and don't take it too seriously to begin with!

Hope you don't mind Splicer. I used your sweet norn image to make a quick .psd example file you can find in the .7zip included. It's crude but should give you an idea of how I work.

Just a heads up that this is still ongoing but for the next two weeks I'll be travelling so there won't be progress for awhile.

I'm pretty far behind the time frame I originally expected but on a positive the female is almost 100% complete and male shouldn't take too much longer once I'm back and able to crack on with it.

I think the female baby turned out pretty cute :) As she ages the purple colour comes in with each stage.

They look amazing!

Are these guys going to be released?

They seem near completion, and it's been too long since the last new breed for the original Creatures
