Love it. It looks kind of like something from a D&D setting background. In a good way.

I like the idea of it being nighttime inside the room.

I haven't forgot about this, in fact, here's a preview to show the progress...

Chione preview 3

The dome looks so simple & yet, it was the hardest part of the room so far. By contrast, the cave system is going to be simple. Tedious, but simple. The lake will probably be the next troublesome area....

Edit: I just added a preview of one of the completed or almost completed caves to my blog as well.

I like the way the tunnels are turning out. :)

If you're not sure how to make them look hewn, try looking for images of Coober Pedy. :) It's a whole opal-mining town in South Australia which lives underground because it gets too hot aboveground. Here's their church, a common room, and an underground motel. :)

Thanks for the images Malkin, it does help a bit. Do you know of any images where the hewn & unhewn sections are right next to each other?
There is an area in where the tunnels will merge with one of the unhewn caves, so any images of where hewn tunnel meets natural cave will be very helpful.

Here's a quick preview of the next section of Chione that was finished early this morning.

Coober Pedy's a mining town, so I can't say for certain if any 'unhewn' appearing rock is totally natural. The above ground rock scarp might help. There's also the less-nicely-hewn mine tunnels which may provide inspiration.

Thanks for the help Malkin, those pictures will help with some of the other backgrounds I am planning to make after I finish the Chione background.

There probably won't be a Chione update for a few days because of the length of time it will take for me to finish rendering the caves & tunnels. The tunnel section needs 3 different renders & it takes several hours for my computer to render each one. After the tunnels are finished rendering, there are at least 2 or 3 more renders I need to do for other parts of the cave system. I'm hoping that those other renders won't take as long to render as the tunnels have been. Once the renders are done, all that is left is to piece them together with the rest of the background & add the details.

If it all turns out the way I want it to, the next update will be the finished background.

Yay! I finished it. The background is completely done!

The completed background.

It's really really large, so the full sized picture may take a while to load.

Have fun....

Oh my goodness, Mea! This looks beyond fantastic, and I don't even think I have one favorite part of it. This is going to be one amazing place for creatures to explore when it's released! I can't say again how amazing this is. A "Great work!" sounds cliche, but you've gone above and beyond. Everyone involved with this project is to be commended, although you more than deserve to be in the spotlight for a bit, Mea! Beautiful!

:D:D:D The ice drips in the pond are my favorite part of the entire room. I love how they turned out. I honestly did not expect them to turn out that well. I thought I would have to redo them & experiment a number of times before I got them to turn out nicely. I was really really surprised when they turned out so beautifully on the first try.

No, I haven't made a news post about the background. Since it was part of someone else's project, it never really occurred to me to do so. If you want to do so, I certainly don't mind.

The ice drips were something that I painted by hand in the program I was using to put the background together. (I used a wacom tablet & an art program that allows layers, like Photoshop or Corel Painter.)

1. I started out with a very pale, almost white blue & drew in the basic shape of the ice drips & filled them in.

2. Then I used a pale I think it's called cyan blue to paint a few lines of color on the side of the ice drips that was furthest away from the light source so that it looked like the light was shining through the ice. I tried to make the lines of color follow the curve that I wanted the ice to make.

3. Once I had the cyan color in place, I used a pale shadowy blue to color the sides of the ice drips that were closer to the light source. This helped to create the shadows & show which ice drips were behind the others.
Note : The only solid patch of color I used was the base off-white color. Everything else was only thin lines of color to give the ice drips a bit of texture to them, to make them something other than smooth mounds. Also I might have had the brush set to slightly transparent. The overlapping translucent brush strokes create a nice play of color that adds to the look of the ice.

4. Using the dodge tool, I played around & added highlights to various parts of the ice drips. I didn't really plan where to add them, I just added them where I felt that they would look good.

5. Then, using the burn tool, I added a little bit of extra shading to the areas in shadow. (This step might have switched places with #4. It's one of the details that I don't remember exactly.)

6. After I was done playing with the burn & dodge tools, I used the smudge tool to start blurring everything together. Following the curve I wanted the ice to make, I just kept smudging & blurring the colors together until it felt right.
Note: You can pause step 6 to repeat any of the previous steps when things start blurring together too much or to intensify the colors a bit.

7. Once the blurring & smudging is done, cleaning up the edges of the ice drips is the next step. Only remove the excessive blurring around the edges, a little bit of blurring is fine. A little bit of blur around the edges of the ice drips can make it look like the water there is just starting to freeze & add more to the ice drips.

8. Duplicate the layer the ice drips is on & play around with the layer effect options. Some of the layer effects can enhance the colors & the intensity of the colors to give the ice drips that final touch & really make them look like ice. Sometimes the effect is too strong, so you have to make the layer slightly transparent to tone the effect down to keep it from being over done.
Note: Steps 7 & 8 might also have been switched around.

That's pretty much how I made the ice drips Malkin. :)

If someone hasn't put this in-game by next week, can someone give me a poke? I should have a bit of time that I can spend rooming it out and adding CA.

mea, have you thought about a favourite place icon, and how did you want norns to get into the room?

I sent messages to the other two people who were working on this project, sam999 & silvak several days ago asking for feedback on part of the room, & this morning when I finished the room, but so far I haven't heard anything back from either of them.

If they don't respond in a few days, I certainly wouldn't mind if someone else put the room into the game.

Earlier in this topic, we did discuss both the favorite place icon & how to get into the rooms. What we had decided for the rooms was basically something similar to the elevines, but with different sprites. I still have to finish the sprites for them.
As for the favorite place icon, I think we had decided on either a snowflake or a gear or cog. Originally the room was suppose to be a winter/celtic/steampunk themed room, which was where the cog or gear icon idea came from. I plan on making a bunch of pipes & machinery pieces that can be added to the background to make it steampunk like, but I think those will work better as being an add-on to the decoration part of the Garden Box, that way if people want to leave the room natural, they can or if they want to make it steampunk, they can.

I'll finish the sprites for the favorite place icon & the various teleporters/elevines tonight & get them posted on my blog as well.

Here's two possible choices for the favorite places icons & the teleporter/door for getting into the Chione metaroom. I'm still working on the teleporter/elevator/elevines to get between the various caves.

My goodness, I'd never heard of this before now.

It looks so magical and beautiful. A wonderful wintery world that I am sure my Creatures and myself would love. This work is amazing indeed.

I can think of a lot of story ideas just looking at the sparkly background and high mountains with the crystal caves. =^_^= Can't wait to be able to explore it for real.

(P.S. I choose the Snowflakes and Stars icons.)

I'm back after 11 years. Holy dooley!

How is the cave system going to be linked with teleporters? I mean, I can sort of see three teleporters going up and down on the far right - with one in the small dugout cave, and from there, norns could walk all the way through the ice lake, but what about those two rooms in the middleish?

Sorry that it took a bit longer than I thought it would, but I had to redo the elevator pillars several times. The carved stone effect I was trying for at first wasn't working out the way I hoped it would.

- The elevator pillars -

Hmmm... as for ideas for the placement of the elevator/teleporter pillars...
* the caves on either side of the lake could connect to the surface
* the little cave in the middle, surrounded on all sides by caves & tunnels could connect to a second pillar in the cave directly above it,
* the caves on the far right could connect in the manner that Malkin suggested.

Those are really the only ideas I have for the placement of the pillars.

Wow.

Just.... WOW!

I've been gone lately and only got back today to see Chione go from an idea and a bit of fanart into the... ....astounding metaroom background I've seen. The other parts of it are also really good.

My advice for the pillars is use the little cave in the middle, surrounded on all sides by caves & tunnels connecting to a second pillar in the cave directly above it.

P.S. The snowflakes & stars icon is best in my viewpoint. Does anyone think I should make a poll on which room icon people like?

P.P.S. Anyone got ideas for what the native Chione critters/plants should be?

Good to see that you are back now sam999. :) If you want to do the poll you can, but so far, the snowflakes & stars seems to be the more popular one. As for native plants, conifers of various types obviously. Possibly a juniper based conifer for a small shrub that could produce berries. Some type of tiny minnow-like fish & crab or ground shrimp for the pond are some of the ideas I had for critters.

Here's my attempt at listing stuff which is needed.

Weather Snowflakes which fall from clouds, amount depends on seasons. Also, droplets of water from the ice in the tunnels.

Critters Some sort of small fish and a small shrimp for the pond. Little critter for norns to eat, either a lemming like mip said, or a arctic doozer or some kind of chione carrot beetle? Some small white bird which never lands, think the hummingbirds in C1 for example.

Plants A pine tree species. A small berry bush with color-changing fruit like bamboo berries. A sort of seaweed in the pond. And tunroot. A plant using the sprite of the darklight plant which grows inside the tunnels, producing heat and keeping the tunnels warm. Also drops edible fruit and leaves.

Toys Snow. Small agents, invisible to the hand lying on the floor of the metaroom. Creatures can see them as toys. When pushed they gather into snowballs visible to you. Norns can't lift them until they are snowballs, so it looks like norns bending down and packing snowballs. Pushing one once it is turned into a snowball will cause it to either get bigger or fly off and hit another norn. Snowball fight! Also, a toboggan which is basically the hoverboard with a different sprite moving along the ground level.

Other Frosty Breath. An agent which means that when the temperature ingame drops below a certain level, any creature that isn't dead or underwater in the place with low temperature will exhale clouds of "smoke" like the hoverdoc medical spray in appearance. Said "smoke" is harmless, and can't be seen by creatures. The agent for it would be injected separately from the main chione agent.

Any other ideas?

Oh wow! Absolutely amazing!!

Let me just start by saying that, Mea, you have as much (if not more) right to this project as Sam or I.

I'm still going though all the info posted here and on the blog. So as of right now I have no ideas or suggestions but I'm looking forward to getting more involved with the community and this project again.

Just a quick question for everyone.... How soon do you want the basic room released? As soon as possible, or are you willing to wait & want it to be released during the CCSF?

I injected Chione into the game, knowing beforehand that it was a really big metaroom, and was still awestruck by how big it was. Seriously, the size is epic. It'll be a bit of a pain to fully customize, but it's epic. It was also pleasantly surprising to see that it already had CA implemented and wasn't just a completely empty room.

With that said, I have a nitpick: This spot could trap baby creatures.
