One of the Norn breeds I'm working on is supposed to be larger than other breeds when they hatch. In order to achieve this I planned on using sprites for the next oldest life stage (that has sprites). Because that life stage uses its own sprites too, the Norn stays the same size for two (visual) life stages.
What is the best way to implement this? Can I just use a copy of the sprites/atts from the older life stage for the younger? If I do, does that mean that I don't have to make a copy and I can just rename the sprites/atts, and for however many life stages don't have sprites it will use the previous set it has available for that breed?
Would that work even if I only have, say, baby sprites/atts, the adult Norn would continue to look like a baby throughout their life? Or would I have to use a copy of the atts to tell it that the body still fits together the same way, ie. the Norn hasn't grown? Or have copies for both sprites and atts?

If you only have one set of Sprites/ATTs, as far as I know the game will use that set no matter what lifestage the creature is.
If it cannot find a set for it's current stage, it will default to the next younger set.
For example, the standard breeds use four sets of ATT's and sprites to cover seven lifestages.
Keep in mind any crossbreeds are going to look rather odd.

Hahaha, I never thought about that. *tries to imagine Norn with teeny body and giant head*
What must it be like to crossbreed Micro Grendels with other things? I'm almost afraid to find out. O.O

I actually think that those sort of crossbreeds are very, very pretty. And funny. XD
Do not upset the ugly worm, lest it be a dragon in disguise. (>oo)>
