Fanlore Needs Your Fandom History!

Hello everybody! I am a regular Fanlore page creator and editor, with a heavy focus on a lot of '90s-'10s fandoms. I started and wrote much of the Petz page, with the help of many Petz Community members on their forums. Now I'm here to ask for the Creature's fandom with help writing theirs.

Fanlore is a wiki for fandom, created by those who made AO3. That is to say... Fanlore is meant to archiving and preserving the coming and goings of people like you! I was very surprised you had no Fanlore page, so I made one. You can help me fill in the info by either joining the website and editing the page directly or answering some questions here.

1. When did you first get the game? Which one was it? Where did you find it?

2. How did you discover the online community? What website was it?

3. Can you share any other Creature community websites? Early ones and ones that are still up are good resources.

4. In your own words, how do you describe the gameplay? What's the most fun thing to do?

5. What are things the fandom does (or did)? Things like contests, events, live stream/chat parties, etc.

6. Can you tell me more about things specific to the Creatures fandom? For example: the Petz fandom has a thing where they breed for show animals, then host shows. Then they make graphics that go on your website if you win.

7. Can you tell me about significant fandom history events? Such as the creation of software, important discoveries, fandom drama.

8. What does the fandom call itself? For Harry Potter it's Potterheads, for Petz its the Petz Community, etc etc.

9. Anything else to add that you think ought to go on the FL page?

Thanks for doing this. There's a lot of history here that is really on the knife's edge of being lost forever at any given time, with the web the way it is these days.

I may take my hand to editing if I have the time, but two events in CC history that come to mind as notable were AntiNorn and CL's first attempts into (draconically) licensing their dev tools, because both of them were tiny watershed moments for how similar patterns would play out on the net later, even if they're both mostly unknown at this point.

Some information about the DS aftermath Yahoo group, considering what happened to Yahoo groups recently, is also probably important.

Wolfling and feral runs are both pretty unique Creatures community 'event types' that bear some parallels to Petz shows. I don't know that the website award culture lasted nearly as long here as it did there, though that's the thing - I'm not completely sure. If you can find archives of some of the old community 'spokes', like A2K, they often link out to archives of other individual sites and notes that are highly relevant to this kind of digging. The next time I go on a 'dive' I'll try to keep better notes...

The fandom is pretty much universally called the Creatures Community and this is often shortened to CC (which also happens to be the acronym for this website, so the latter is often referred to as CCaves).

Edit: For some major historical drama, check out this Wiki page.

hey! i saw you on the Petz forum!!

unfortunately this website is basically the only one that's still regularly updated. there's a couple of niche blogs and personal websites but they update VERY sporadically--you can check em out on the links page. last year I wanted to make a website for creatures and other virtual pet games that was inspired by crappy geocities websites, but i didn't get very far, LOL

as for the gameplay... it doesn't really have a specific Goal in mind, per se! in the first game you were given an arbitrary score for breeding more generations of norns, but in the second game things became a lot more open-ended. you can hand-raise them, watch them from afar, conduct experiments on them, create new objects... i like the bioengineering side of things, myself, though i'm not very good at it :P

and for major events... the people posting before me already mentioned the norn torture and C2 genome fiascoes, but on the more positive side of things we have the release of the CFE genome for C3 and the many updates people have made to it (as far as i know there's STILL some things that need to be fixed...!)

>CL's first attempts into (draconically) licensing their dev tools,

ooh I never knew about this!

The Creatures Community Spirit Festival is absolutely something to include, it's a fanmade yearly event that modders and artists try to prepare something for. It's a more "modern" addition and it's still ongoing.

And it's worth bringing up the Evil Council, it was an invite-only "secret" rp group that spanned various forums and was dedicated to bringing chaos to the CC with mostly harmless pranks.

Thanks everyone, the Fanlore page is slowly filling out! Keep answering if you have anything more to add. :3

edit: sorry if you see my reply 3 times :( I refreshed the page twice and for some reason that duplicated my reply.

You'll need some more information about modding in general.

Oh I heard about creatures in a magazine called Consumer Reports for kids. (Or maybe 3, 2, 1 contact.) it was a game review. My Aunt got me a copy for my birthday later.

It came in this big brick type box that stood longer up and down rather then across. The manual was color, and the box contained two discs. I assumed the extra disc as an extra copy of the game. I never loaded it on my CD Rom to find out. I gave it to my friend. He told me he loved the game.

I was running Windows 95 at the time, and it was the most memorable for me because I sunk so much time into the game as a child.

I did not discover the other games an the community until much later.

I did however frequent The Place of the Evil Shee. I even installed the Burrows mod by replacing my world. I was not aware there was a community until after I got C2 and C3 from Amazon in 2003.

I did an Internet search and found many more pages for creatures had been made since then.

I know the thing I enjoy doing the most is exploring the world with my creature. It was not until I was older that I discovered the joy of breeding the creatures.

When I was younger I focused on them as a pet. Caring for them, feeding them, help keeping them happy.

I had no idea how deep the game was until I was older.

I would think the community enjoys the ability to speak on a like minded topic. I can ask questions and someone always knows more then me.

The wiki contains a lot of the information you want, like the discovery of Secret Adventure Mode.

I think we are most known for as a community is the Creatures Community Spirit Festival we do every year.

Does Rebabel go there? The newly-released open source reverse-engineered Docking Station server that's probably going to replace Albian Warp?
