As next year will mark twenty years since Creatures Caves was first launched, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss everyone's memories of the Creatures Community over the years. Things have also been a little quite on here lately, so it might be good to have a bit of a discussion going.
Some of my fondest memories are probably browsing the old Creatures websites (Creatures 2 Obsession, Helen's Bibble Directory) at school whilst I was around 9 or 10. It's sad to think that both of those websites are no longer around. I also remember when the official Gameware forums closed, which I thought was a shame as I enjoyed reading them occasionally.
What some of your fondest (or not so fond) memories of the Creatures Community? |

My first memory is joining Albia 2000 and being miffed that the username "Norngirl" was already taken XD |

I remember Helen's Bibble Directory. Wow. There's a name I haven't thought about in a while.
I've always loved the creativity of the CC and the dedication it has. The core group is small but we manage to keep on, year after year. And we keep finding new stuff to do with the games.
And it's still the best artificial life ever made.
I remember how vibrant and active the online community used to be, and while it is sad to see it diminished, it's amazing it's still around at all. The fact that there still is a Creatures Community to speak of is something we should be proud of.
Conclude with killer catchphrase.

Docking Station was what introduced me to both online gaming and modding, I distinctly remember the first time I spoke with somebody online over the warp, and finding my first 3rd party breed - the Gargoyle Norns. From then on I was excited for what other cool stuff could be out there that people had made for the game, the possibilities seemed endless.

man, this reminds me that there use to be a game called nokuku that was trying to be a browser version of creatures
the developer was rewriting it completely and it was looking pretty good, but then one day the website just went poof! |

Bit of a weird one, this, but I have an oddly fond memory of stumbling across Wafuru's pre-AiN website and being enamored with the avatar they used. I think it was some white-haired animé character (possibly Inuyasha?) and something about it just endeared me to that place. C2 being my favourite of the series, I fell instantly in love with their beautifully-painted breeds: Kais, MerNorns, UniNorns and Scorpios. |

I have fond memories of sending creatures in to LNA and chatting over the chat there. |

I remember DS being one of my first experiences with online games. It was fun to meet new people over the warp and I had a few friends I made along the way who have left the CC but we still stay in touch. |

I used to make norns "helium buoyant" with the physics adapter, and send them off. People would receive norns that float up to the ceiling, and message me in a panic. |

I never realised that was possible. It sounds hilarious, I'll have to look up the download for the adapter.
Other good memories I have is finally getting Docking Station to work on my PC without an Internet connection, and then downloading a tonne of COBs onto a USB drive at school and installing them when I got home (which stopped the following April because the school put up stupid Web filters that didn't allow you to download anything).

I liked to run "adoption center" worlds where I'd just take in any Norns I got in the Warp and then randomly send them out in droves to try to get people to "adopt" them. I was under ten at the time and now I wonder how many people were probably quite annoyed by it, considering I usually got the Norns sent right back!
On the plus side, I would sometimes receive Norns that spoke German or French, and my English-speaking Norns would start randomly picking up words from other languages, so that was pretty cool.

I was on board since C1 came out and stuck to it until docking station came along. Much as I loved C1 the warp really made things fun for me.
One of the most fun things: I spent two hours on a docking station chat, teaching a 9 year old girl how to download a 3rd party breed, unzip the file and sort all the body data and sprite files into the right directories. After it was done, she was so happy, then her father took over and thanked me for my patience and good humor. And I had thought she was alone in front of the computer. Of course I thanked him for being a great dad.
I remember all the fastagers, immortals and other weird creatures that came in through the warp in hordes, Generation 4400 or something. I had "welcome worlds" where I let them all in and patiently crossed them with generation 1 norns until I got creatures who aged normally and were mortal, but retained some of the wild colours and odd behaviours of the newcomers. I really missed that part after the server was gone. |

Honestly I have such profound memories of all the little things about Creatures. I remember how the original American version of Creatures had "Tamagotchi Schmamagotchi" on it because tamagotchis were so big for about five minutes when I was wee Merthing.
And I remember being absolutely enchanted with the C1 world. It was so warm and golden and the colors were amazingly vibrant. The norns themselves were adorable (my favorite was always the purple mountain norns) and I loved thinking, as a kid, about what was in the background, who lived there, what their stories might be. Like the little temple and the distant mountains. It absorbed me into the world. And the little signs from the "time before" that created the little protraits and the statue of Nornity, etc.
And I know this sounds kind of bizarre but I fell totally in love with the idea of hatching eggs. These colorful, patterned things contained LIFE, and they were just little contained worlds of genetics and fur and color and personality. Granted those norns were profoundly stupid and would kill themselves in the most absurd ways, but I loved them so much. They had so much character.
And I remember getting THRILLED beyond belief at seeing the previews of Creatures 2 and then Creatures 3. The pictures were so fascinating and I couldn't WAIT to see more and more and more! That feeling of excitement and anticipation, which always delivered when the game finally was released.
Also I used graphics and sounds from all the Creatures games in just about everything I did. From album coverart I made for mix CDs to website designs to, wow, so many other things... Those little details were always so useful and would go with anything.
And of course making Ainarda was pure joy for me. Not coding it, that was hell, but making the graphics. God it was such a labor of love.

I remember seeing the c3 bengal female promo, and thinking, "that looks kinda horrible, but wow, norns can bottle-feed their babies milk now? I must get this new game!" |
