Creatures with Freaky Limbs

did you know that it's possible for creatures to be born with mismatched limbs, like this? i wanted to see if i could recreate it intentionally, and while i haven't had success so far, some very unusual things have happened...

comparing timothy's genome with that of a normal chichi reveals that he has an extra appearance slot that doesn't correspond with any existing body parts. (appearance slots usually number from 00-04, but timothy's extra gene takes up slot 05) i can make an appearance gene take up slot 05 with hex editing, but this doesn't actually have any effect! so there must be some other gene at play here.

however, things managed to get stranger... copying timothy's genome and using the eggmaker to lay an egg from it produces a bruin norn that looks NOTHING like him... but still has a mismatched foot!

in an attempt to prove it really IS genetic, i downloaded timothy's mom, annie and attempted to clone her using this thing. except it turns out that the "clone" spell doesn't actually CLONE the creature, per se: it basically just breeds the creature with itself! so, she gave birth to a norn that looked a lot like timothy... except, among other things, his grendel limbs had swapped positions! (he also only has half of a grendel tail, as opposed to timothy's half-butterfly tail. at least, i think it's a butterfly tail? yes, it changed in my game for some reason)

(no, the new baby isn't dead, he just closed his eyes at an inopportune time)

a creature that was mentioned to me was ute, who apparently has a body for a head. however, when i imported her into my game she just had a chichi norn head... not sure what happened there.

so... yeah. i have no clue what i've been doing for the past 3 hours. if you wanna help with the experiment, then feel free! i can also supply you with patches' creature file if you'd like to study him.

(is this in the right forum...? i have no idea)

Ok, this is amazing. I hope some of the more savvy people can shed some light on this, because it would be so cool to be able to use this in a genome.

THE PLOT THICKENS!

so, i cloned annie and timothy a bunch of times... turns out that even genetically identical clones will have different appearances! (also, annie somehow died in the process. whoops)

IN ADDITION, the "patchwork" creatures (as i have taken to calling them in my head... yep, i'm a dork) can only use body parts from slot A of each species. this means they can look like bruin norns, jungle grendels, desert ettins, and/or butterfly norns.

i am going to use the clones to hopefully isolate the gene(s) that are causing this madness... stay tuned!

I've had a look for any existing info, and while Jessica has a thing Here about duplicate and "broken" appearence genes, it only touches on c1, and there's no weird mismatched parts.

so, after a lot of unneeded fluffing around with genecompare, i found a solution!

HOW TO MAKE PATCHWORK NORNS:
go in the genetics kit and edit the genus so that it's not expressed, then lay an egg.

seriously, that's ALL there is to it. how has anyone not discovered this?!

you can make ettins and grendels too -- just change the species

Removing the Genus gene usually breaks things pretty badly. I suspect it never occurred to anyone that non-expressing it might have a different result than simply deleting it.

That said, this is one of the reasons Creatures is so brilliant - you can still find new stuff in it 20+ years later.

Conclude with killer catchphrase.

Awesome! Have you tested it out in the other games at all?
