State of Things

I have been out of the picture for about 5-6 years now. The new game seems to be in hiatus? But things seem to be rolling along here...

What is the state of the community I guess? Is it a handful of survivors or is it still where it was at a few years ago? Are there any other active fora?

Are we going to reach a point where C1/C2/C3/DS are unplayable on new systems?

Good to see you around! :D

Judging by the teaser game they released in July last year, the new game's hiatus is a blessing. There are a lot of Discord servers these days. [ngrin] We're still kicking along, helping people figure out how to play Creatures on modern systems. There've been a few very interesting developments this year on the Creatures 2 world by GimmeCat.

We're hanging on, join Discord for most of the activity. Games-wise, there are hopes for a fanmade warp server.

We are still a handful, people cycle in and out at a trickle. I think stuff has overall slowed down over the past few years, there was a blogging boom and bust.

There are a couple of big projects being worked on like Albian Warp but all restrained to dev free time it seems.

Discord is where most real time convo is.

All games require a bit of work to get running on modern systems and I am wary of that quantity ticking up over time. However, Windows 10 has proper 16 bit color emulation and can run c2e in windowed mode without issue for the most part which is an unexpected boon in that regard.

I would be skeptical of the use of the word 'hiatus' applying to the new game, I think the new IP owner bit off way more than they could chew and aren't bothering much with it. Surprises come around from time to time though.

What about a kickstarter project to launch an new DS Server or a compatibility patch for all creatures games?

A jury-rigged DS Server is currently a thing, but it's in a somewhat early state of development. Functional though.

Yep, the Albian Warp Team is currently wrapping things up for an official beta release, ready for the CCSF :D

If you cannot wait any longer and want to join the Alpha, feel free to join us on the CAOS Coding Cave Discord https://discord.gg/rxejKXz we got a #albianwarp channel of there ;)

Already on it, no kickstarter needed though ;)

I might open up some way for donations, so I can pay for a Pizza, or a Cup of Mate Tea, while working on the Warp XD. but It is a Side Project, and the costs generated by the Domain/Server and Stuff are accounted for.

Between Microsoft (say what you want, they maintain backwards compatibility to a pretty decent degree) and GOG patches, I think we'll be fine for a while. Some people might have to repurchase, though.

I'm back to creatures after more than 10 years and so glad to find you are all still here and going strong. I bought GOG and had no problems so far. Well, there's the ocassional world trashed by malfunctioning agents and autokill, but that was no different way back when. I still prefer docking station over Creatures 3, and my nephew claims the GOG version will run most smoothly if you have C1toDS installed with all its patches for the sake of their offline patch. I'm also happy with C1toDS, I have to say.

Where can I find C1toDS? I'm replaying Creatures 1 right now, and I got a copy for my sister.

At the Creatures Wiki - use Lacota's version of the download and the 2018 patch.
