POLL: How did you find creatures?   1 | 2

When I say poll, I mean more like a survey. Sorry if that mislead anyone.

1. How did you come across the creatures games?
2. Where are you from?/Where were you when you discovered creatures?
3.How old were you?

I'm curious where were the creatures games mostly sold. Was it mainly popular in Europe? I was born in 1998 in the US, so a little after the first Creature's game's big break. My mom bought Creatures Playground for me and my brothers when she visited Germany. I don't know where exactly she bought it. Was Creatures mainly popular in Europe and was that why I never heard much about it ? Or was I just behind the craze? I started playing DS around 2009 or so, and the servers were relatively empty.

Anyway, thanks ahead of time for participating!

1. I first heard about the series from an advertisement included with one o the Petz games (I think it was Catz 3, but I can't quite remember). Then Mom brought home Creatures 3 one day.

2. I lived in the Eastern US when I first learned of Creatures. Still living here to this day.

3. I believe I was in either second or third grade at the time. I can't quite remember, though.

Belgium
3.How old were you?
C2: around 7 to 10 y/o

1. IDK, I vaguely recall mum playing C3. We never had a proper TV, we always used some sort of extra card or later extra stick to use mum's PC as a TV. That means when she played something it was always prominently featured in the living room.

2. Western corner of germany, about 3 hours by train from the dutch and belgian borders.

3. *shrugs* It's all pretty vague, but I'd say either late kindergarten or early elementary school.

1. My dad bought a newspaper from a Co-Op supermarket (which has long since gone) in the late 90s which came with a copy of Creatures 2. Pretty amazing how they essentially were giving a way a full game for free.

2. I'm from Northern England and still live there to this day.

3. About three or four. I barely understood the game then as I couldn't read and it wasn't until my dad found the CD again in 2003 that I finally got hooked. I finally joined the CC in 2008.

1. On a wednesday after school I went to a big GB (it's called "Carrefour" now, a kind of big store where they have food but also televisions and clothes... It's a type of store that is rapidly dying out here now :)) and I saw Creatures 1 standing between all the other PC games, I immediately wanted it.
2. I'm from Belgium.
3. I must have been about 9 year olds when I discovered it, around 1997 perhaps.

I originally came across the Creatures games through watching a friend play Creatures 1 on their computer while we where hanging out at their house as kids, around 1997 or so. I was about 7 at the time, and was living in Texas in the US at the time (I still live in the US, just not Texas anymore.)

2. I'm from the Netherlands. I was in my living room when I made this discovery!
3. Must've been 7 or 8 years old.

1. My mom gave me a whole bunch of game discs when I got my first computer. I think a friend gave them to her, but I'm not sure. All I know is that Creatures 2 was in it, and for at least a year, I didn't realize the applets existed and just found some strange pleasure in shoving everything that wasn't nailed down into the incubator.

2. I'm from the United States, specifically the West Coast, and I've never been out of the state I was born in, so it's safe to assume that's where I was when I got C2.

3. I was four or five when I got C2. I think I joined the Caves around when I got a copy of Creatures Exodus, so I was probably around ten or eleven when I got that one.

1. Creatures 1 was part of a bundle of children's games that came with our first PC in about 2001. I didn't really understand it as I thought it would be more like the "Dogz" game that was also in the bundle. I loved the little world though. Then this week something reminded me of a complex little game, and a quick Google search and €5.09 later, here I am!

2. I'm from Ireland

3. I was about nine when I first played it!

I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm having my fun and that's all that matters.

My brother had a copy of Creatures 2. He tried to stop me from playing it, because he thought I would get upset when my norns died. I played it anyway.

It took me AGES to figure out things like getting infinite scroll. I downloaded SOOOOOO many COBs. Helen's Bibble Directory was my favorite.

Sadly, one day I rolled the office chair over the disk and shattered it. My brother then got me Creatures 3, and I downloaded DS. This was back when the servers were still up and I got to make my own account.

I joined Creatures Caves back in 2010. We don't talk about those days.

Don't forget. Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember her, you are not alone.

1. My mum found a copy of Creatures 1 in Electronics Boutique (now known as GAME) and bought it for me. She thought I'd like it because I was into Dogz/Catz and Tamagotchis at the time!

2. I'm from England.

3. It was in 1997, so I must've been... 9. Blimey.

I was a kid...maybe 10 or 11 (I was born in 88), and I was looking up virtual pet games on the internet, because I had really enjoyed my gigapet when it worked, and I loved The Sims.

Anyway, I ended up stumbling upon multiple mentions of the Creatures games, and than I found information about one of them, called Docking Station, being free. I downloaded that and fired it up.

The community was still a bit active. Norns kept warping to me, but I had no idea what they were. I got on the chat and asked "What are these cat things and what am I supposed to do". Someone else wrote back "they're called norns..." and than she explained what I was supposed to do with them.

After that, I found all about custom breeds and agents and the like. Creatures 3 was not available in the local stores at the time so I pirated it (am I allowed to say that? I own them all legitimately now), and figured the game out from there.

After a couple of years, I bought C1 and C2 when I found them (and C3, as well as the mall breeds). Been a fan ever since.

1. I've always been interested in ALife and AI. I discovered Creatures when reading an article about people who play video games in unique ways (like the people who play Skyrim as an NPC, or GTA as a law-abiding citizen) and one of the entries was norn torturers. I definitely don't approve, but I'm glad I got to find out about the game!

2. I live in the United States and got my copy off of GOG. I've never seen a physical creatures product outside of eBay/internet photos. If that's even what the question is asking?

3. I discovered Creatures around mid or late 2014, so I would have been about 16 at the time (assuming my math is right. December birthdays always screw up my math). Late to the party, but I'm glad I'm here!

1. C1 disc included with a big box copy of Oddballz via Ebay. I can't say what country the big box originally may have been from, but given shipping costs it was probably the US.

2. I was in a remote region of the US.

3. I was 9.

Yes, Creatures was more popular in Europe than it was in the US to my understanding, on top of being a European game to begin with. Industry genre stereotypes hadn't fully congealed when C1 came out but US interests definitely were starting to lean away from simulators by the late 90s.

1. My cousin and I were really into tamagotchis. So my uncle saw a computer game with a slogan "Tamagotchi, schmagotchi" on it and figured my cousin would like it. That was Creatures 1. She did like it, a little, but I adored it. I've been in love ever since.

2. Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. I discovered Creatures at my cousin's house but eventually my parents got me my own copy. I was originally afraid to download anything off the internet because everyone always said "it's dangerous, you'll get a virus"! But one day I did it anyway (shout out to the C1 Bunny Norns) and once I realized it was safe I went crazy. I still get so much feels from those COBs and the games.

3. Goodness, I must have been a *baby*. Like six perhaps? It's amazing how this game touches so many lives in such a unique and powerful way. That's why we're all here. I just wish someone would put together a worthy Creatures 4. And by someone I don't mean a company, I mean us - the fans.

1. My mother just bought me the game along several others. It was a low budget 10 franc edition of C1 (containing just a CD game in a paper jacket) edited by Pointsoft. I still got that CD and its jacket just 1 meter from myself at the moment. I made sure to keep that CD since C1 is my favorite videogame.

2. Eastern France, just 20 min away from the German and Luxembourgish border. By the time I got C1, C2 was already out and I've seen C2 boxes several times.

3. I was 7 years old

1. I got an Amazon gift card for my birthday, and found Creatures 3 while looking for a "pet game" to spend the money on.

2. I moved a couple of times throughout my childhood, so I guess I'm "from" a few places, though I suppose the closest guess would be Illinois since I did most of my growing up there from 10 to 18. When I discovered Creatures, we were living in Hawaii.

3. I was 8 or 9 years old!

When I was about 11, 1996, my dad took me to this computer store about a half an hour away. It's still there, and I still buy stuff from it lol. I saw the black box with a norn on it, and it had a sign on it that said "Contains Digital DNA." I thought it would be a really interesting game to play.

Years later, I'm still coding stuff for Creatures 1.

1. My dad got me a game magazine that included a full version of Creatures 1.
2. Northern Germany, where I've lived for my entire life so far.
3. This one is tricky. I couldn't find a date on the game magazine, but it was sold before the Euro was a thing, so I assume it was 2001 or early 2002, meaning that I was 4 or 5 years old. It was one of my first computer games ever! I didn't really get into it until a few years later though, which was also when I got the other games from the series. :)

Hi! First post here...or on any Creatures forum, I think.

1. How did you come across the creatures games?

I got C1, C2 and C3 as Christmas presents! Thanks, mom <3

2. Where are you from?/Where were you when you discovered creatures?

I'm from Northern California in the U.S., though I live on the east coast now.

3.How old were you?

I was either 5 or 6 when I first started playing Creatures 1 (I was born in 1992).

It's kind of embarrassing that I've never made my own COB or breed in all this time, since I've been playing on and off for 20 years now. It's probably because I always played it by myself and didn't have any friends to share the game with. But Creatures 1 has always been magical to me and close to my heart! I like C2 as well, but the graphics and style of C3 have just never grown on me. Maybe sometime soon I can release my first creation. :)

I necessarily did not come across myself. My dad did. When he was about my age,he found a game at a garage sale?He played the game and he enjoyed it!So when i was about 5-6 (Don't hurt me but im 11 now :P)My dad bought a Creatures game for me from GOG.com,then he put it on his harddrive and installed it into my computer,it installed quickly and i played it!After that skip to 4-5 years later when i was 8 or 9?I discovered Docking Station and CreaturesCaves.I never made a account but i did get DockingStation. Curious me thought it was a good idea to go online. The first time nothing really happened besides a warning, the second time the game was completely unplayable.2-3 years later here we are now.

1. My mom won a Creatures 2 CD from some event at her work, and brought it home for my brother and I to play with. This was probably back in the early 2000s. She was working as a newspaper editor for a local university at the time.

2. We live in the United States! At the time, our family had just moved from a small town in Illinois to a big city in Florida. I still live in Florida now, but have since moved away to a smaller, quieter town. :)

3. I was around ten years old when I found the CD and started playing it! It's been 14 years since then~ [ngrin]

1. My older siblings had C1 on disc. They never really got into the game, but I can’t remember not playing around with it. In fact, I can’t remember when we had the case or manual for it, they’re lost in the mists of time :).

2. We lived in rural Ireland at the time, with no internet connection, so I have no idea where they got hold of it, or how.

3. I’ve no idea how old I was, either. Pretty young, certainly. I used to just hatch all the eggs and make all the baby Norns follow the ball around until I got bored. Maybe two or three?

I had an operation when I was 9, and my dad bought C1 in a store to cheer me up. I had told my parents repeatedly I wanted a Tamagochi, so he gave me that and told me it was like lots of tamagochis. I pictured a screen full of little tamagochi windows and panicked a little.

I was introduced to C1 when i was like 11 or 12. My friend had it. She was jealous because I was able to keep my creatures alive and wouldn't let me play so my Dad bought me a copy. I forgot about it for a while when I discovered the Sims. Then I found the trio (Creatures 1, 2 and 3) randomly in the dollar store and fell in love with creatures 3. Recently, I've been downloading some of the old games I used to play for my step daughter and I started really getting into it again when I was showing her how to play it. I had no idea that Exodus or the Capillata existed. I'm in complete nerd mode about it now. I'm from the United States - Massachusetts.

I was actually searching online for a game called "Impossible Creatures," a strategy game kind of like Age of Empires where you build an army of spliced animals (ie. a scorpion-tiger) to defend your base. I got a lot of links for this "Creatures" game, and decided it looked even cooler! I was about 13 or so at the time, '04 or '05 in the US. I ended up getting all 3 in the series that year :)

TBH I'm still surprised I hadn't heard about them sooner; I've always been a huge fan of simulation and biology games. Maxis games were my childhood, lol.
