Hey!

If you've tried out the Betaship, I'd love to hear any remarks/bugs/ideas/reviews/whatevers!

If you don't know what the Betaship is, it's a DS metaroom project.
Find more info/download here!

I would like to improve the room, but I don't really know where to start. Any suggestions? I'm just not a pro at art (as you can probably see... *coughcough*), I also prefer spending time on coding instead of arting.
(That's also why it's an open community project. Anyone can contribute to the code/sprites/ideas/whatevers.)

I'm also thinking that the 'desert' area background really needs a redraw. It looks too... 'fall-y' instead of being a desert :P Any volunteers? Ideas?

Also, if you liked/disliked the metaroom, please tell me why! I'm thinking about making a second thing in the Betaship style, but I really need your input on what I should change/keep the same.

Don't worry about 'negative things' being harsh/hurting, I really want to improve and I can handle criticism. :D Also if you think I can't draw or make the worst metarooms or whatever and should steer clear of making them and focus on making other things you would like to see from me instead, tell me. :P

I thought it was themed around the seasons, with a summer area, a winter area, a mostly-aquatic spring area (which was a pun...'spring') and an autumn area.

Well, I would've thought that the right area would be a fall area too if I would only look at the graphics, but actually the middle area is more of a spring/autumn combination and the "autumn area" is actually a summery room. I just can't draw. My apologies. :P

The winter area is just a very arctic area, the middle area is a normal area and the... "fall" area is a desert. The CA and the weather changes according to the seasons.

Summer: it will be hotter in all of the rooms, but the winter room will become a 'normal' climate where plants will grow. It doesn't snow in the winter area either, so it's less cold. It will be hotter in the middle area, and the flowers/plants will have less chance to carry edibles. In the desert, it should be too hot for all plants/flowers.
Winter: it will be very cold in the arctic area, in the middle area it will also occasionally snow. The temperature should be perfect in the desert room for vegetation that isn't dependant on water. (It never rains in the desert)
Spring/Fall: 'normal' temperatures in all rooms (cold in the arctic, hot in the desert).

The heat is also dependant on the time of day, mid-day it's hotter than during midnight. :)

The BETAship is already an outstanding metaroom as it is… I’ve tested it for some time…
After having played a lot of different metarooms over years, there is a disappointingly high number of buggy and -without workarounds and tweaks- not really playable rooms around. Many of them are stuck in the BETA stage. My personal favourite is still the biodome due to its high stability and customisability.
The BETAship is certanly not stuck in the BETA stage and it is not only bugfree but also (to my knowledge) the only metaroom featuring a day/night/seasonal cycle with a completely stable eco-system for normal/desert/jungle/seawater environments. 8)

I understand that the plan for this room is to encourage the community to replace the graphical placeholders by nice animations to make this not only the most realistic and most functional room but also the most beautiful and cute room.
I’m not really sure if that is necessary and, unfortunately, I am unable to contribute by coding or spriting :(. Still, I feel encouraged by your post to express my opinion and try to contribute with a probably silly idea…

Why not use existing sprites in a customisable fashion? My disc is full of them! And I love them all… A small panel at the right side where you can choose between e.g. C1 style sprites (having C12DS installed (Plant --> C1 Tomato)) or C2 style sprites (having C2toDS installed) etc. and reuse the corresponding sprites, similar to what most breeds do… or even let the user choose individually for every class of object, including custom made graphics for this specific room…

The sprites idea is fun, it would be nice to be able to use sprites already installed on the system. It might be hard to pull off for plants of different sizes/shapes but... I'll look into it :D

Malkin: If you've downloaded an earlier version and you download the latest version now, you may have to redownload the new .catalogue file and replace the old catalogue with the new one.

I've been thinking about redoing the bottom layer of the betaship, making the winter and desert biome actually reach to the ends of the metaroom, and getting rid of the small places of water under the dot bridges.
I've seen some swimming norns fall asleep and then pretty much get stuck under there. It bugs me. :P

Good idea?

@neon I was just thinking your plant and fishie might be great for this room. I don't do chaos or PRAY though, so you'll have to get help to integrate them into the agents.

I'm just going to focus on the background as an image (it's not going to be easy, there's 3 different versions that change with the time of day!) and see about actually implementing it once there's enough.

@zurinsel: I'm fairly dreadful at actual design, so if you want to sketch some details for the backgrounds (an above water zone first?), then we can work together on doing them in 3D.

I had some wonderful histological pictures I stole from the uni lab that would make great spaceship "walls" without repurposing the usual Shee Ark stuff. I just have to find them!
