So I recently (yesterday 8D) purchased a laptop that came loaded with Windows 8. I actually asked if I could get one with Windows 7 instead, but alas, it seems that you can only get them with 8 now. I decided to get it anyway since I could always replace the OS later if I couldn't deal with it, and I might as well give it a try.
I've heard rumors of how finicky (buggy) 8 is with various games and programs and decided to see how it did with Creatures. I installed the GOG version of Exodus, set DS to run in compatibility mode and opened it up.
For some reason or other, 8 decided that this meant the game should be forced into 640x480 resolution, which resulted in a gigantic, pixelated, cut-off welcome screen. Not exactly the results I wanted, so I exited and went to mess with the settings. After some quick changes, I can open the game without having to change my color mode settings and with an excellent resolution and screen size.
This is a big deal for me as I've NEVER gotten compatibility to work correctly before, not even in Windows 7. I've always had to go into my settings to switch between High Color and True Color. Now I can run the game immediately with no discernible affects on the image quality of any other program. It's like magic.
More updates on my adventures in Windows Land to follow. |

Huh, that is good to know. I've been considering upgrading to 8 (using 7 right now) and have been worried about how it would run DS and related applications (caos tool, debugger, etc). Do keep us updated!

C3/DS don't require changing your colours if they are loaded full screen. It's just Creatures 2 that seems to play up the most.

If you've got Windows 8 Professional, the licence allows you to downgrade to 7. However, the BIOS changes mean new hardware may not support it - you'd need to check with the manufacturer. |

So today I installed Albian Years. C1 seems to be running great. C2 on the other hand is giving me a lot of problems. C2 will not load if you try to run it with any compatibility settings. Not XP, not Vista, not 7, not anything. Just plain refuses to start up. If you tell it to run in high color you get a slightly better result. The game starts up, everything appears to be running correctly in the game itself. The problem lies in the giant black box that appears on screen.
I don't know for sure what's causing the black box yet. It appears to be related to the small start-up image you get when opening C2, the one with the Shee statue and ettin head and whatnot, almost as if it hadn't closed correctly once the game had started. Bringing up the task manager makes the box go away, which would be great if it didn't also cause the Hand to disappear. Still able to click things and interact with the world, just with NO IDEA of where your cursor is. Hmmmm. |

Are you in 16 bit colour?

The black box is pretty annoying. Thus, I investigated and have found a way to get rid of the black box without getting your hand chopped off!
All I had to do was start the game as I normally would (running it in 16 bit color, of course), move the window to the bottom of my screen until all I could see was the bar that has the minimize and close functions, close the game, and start again!
When it starts, the black box will be trapped where you can't see it. Drag the game back into view and enjoy!

I tried this (moving the window to the bottom of the screen and closing), but it isn't working for me |

It doesn't work for me either so I play with an invisible hand. I wonder why it doesn't work for us!
