Yes folks, it's happening.
A brand-new CC.com is in the works. It should be released around the same time as the new C4 game.
Thoughts?

I take it as you mean this site going for a revamp, huuh?
hmm..not sure..is it any specific you are thinking of that could improve the site?
for me - Im happy you added the bookmark feature, but is there a way to link this bookmarking to e-mail?
like notify if anyone replied to that said bookmarked post?
Is a feature I like a lot wich most forum has (or at least the ones I know of - C-topia (Creaturestopia) to be one of them)
*is poking my head mostly in e-mails XD*
but I guess thats not the kind of improvement you asking for,eh? O.o |

Creaturestopia is powered by phpBB which is professional forum software. I could use phpBB for CC.com if I wanted to, but instead I chose to wrote all of the PHP scripts myself.
I'll look into adding an e-mail feature. I don't think it would be very difficult, but I think most people get annoyed by receiving lots of e-mails.

Ow I see ^^
Oh my - I didn't know that O.o
Thats interessting :3
Thank you Rascii : D
well the e-mail thing could be optional - like most forum has ;P
That way - people that get annoyed - don't need to chek it in - and people *Like..me XD* could have it : D
I for one - would love the e-mail notification *.*

It'll probably take a while to get used to the new forums once this revamp happens. But if it can make browsing the forums easier, than I'm all for it. \o/

Hurray for a revamp! I can't wait, and I admire you for hand coding everything, Rascii. A YouTube channel sounds pretty interesting, C-Rex: I know I'm still getting the hang of making videos, but it's certainly a great way to have fun and generate some more interest in Creatures!

Would it be possible to add all the life stages to adoptions? |

Which other ones are there? From what I remember, they can also differ from game-to-game.
I don't use the COBs or Adoptions pages much myself anymore, but when I revamp them I'll be sure to ask for input from those who do use them often.

The names vary, but there are always seven from memory. Baby, child, adolescent, youth, adult, old or elderly, and ancient or senile. |

Searchable/taggable norns/cobs/metarooms would be nice, categorised by game.

Liam: Tags sounds like a really great idea. In your opinion, how would they work on the "posting" form? With like checkboxes? I hope that makes sense. Do you have an example posting forms that use tags?

Tick boxes are good for the main terms, and perhaps a comma separated field for extras?

I was thinking a dropdown for game and basic category, and then a text field where you could enter whatever tags you wanted separated by comma, yeah. Keeps it simple but still organised.

Liam: I'm nervous about letting people type their own tags. >< And trusting them to separate each by a comma. I guess it would be OK though since posts submitted by members require approval.
DisasterMaster: I'm not sure what you mean by "Counters". Can you elaborate on that please?

Yeah, I've seen tags abused before... someone types "treehugger", someone else types "treehuggers", someone else misspells it, etc., etc...
Maybe it would help to include "suggestions" that come up when someone starts typing a tag? I remember using something like that for a search function a while back, it worked a little like Google's suggestion feature. That could help keep duplicates down.

Suggestions may be painful to implement, though.
I think you can trust people to type tags, really. Just use the same swear filter as the forum. Trust your users; collectively they're way more intelligent than you are. A tagging system allows people to create new categories, new search terms, all sorts of things. It makes organisation much easier in the long run -- check out the Repository.

Rascii wrote: I'm nervous about letting people type their own tags. >< And trusting them to separate each by a comma. I guess it would be OK though since posts submitted by members require approval. I wouldn't mind a suggestions list feature being implemented. I think it would be cool, if you want to go through the work of adding one, Rascii! Ultimately it's your decision in the end.
The approval system aids efficiency and accuracy, so I'd hope that any member-added tags (regardless of whether a suggestions list is made) would be put through approval. The way I see it, this wouldn't mean that people can't add their own tags still, or that we don't trust them, it would just help to keep an eye on little accidental things, like duplicates and spelling.
If we could edit any tag mistakes through the approval system, it would mean less work, as we'd correct them right there and then before they're approved, instead of having to actively search and check for them later. |

Take this with a grain of salt, as I can't handle approvals by myself, but I don't know that a suggestions list is needed - I don't think it's flexible enough to predetermine tags. We use freehand tagging at TCR, without commas, and while it's not perfect, we go on convention and our best judgement to create a sensible tagging system for our creatures, and the tag cloud helps guard against spelling mistakes.

Well, it wasn't painful when I implemented it, but whatever. I wasn't saying force people to only use certain tags, I thought letting people see things like "what tags others had used that start with the letters TRE" would be helpful. A tag cloud has to collect tags that have been used in the past anyways, and that's exactly what a suggestion feature does--the latter is just smarter about what it displays for the user.

A way around this would be hiding 'unique' tags unless they are specifically searched for, and making sure that any tag corrections apply to all identical tags. So if someone submits a whole bunch of "Briun" Norns we only have to correct them once.
Other than misspellings I don't really think tags would be much trouble. The biggest problem would be Norns being submitted with few or no tags at all.
A 'suggest additional tags' button could help there, allowing users to suggest tags from a list of existing tags.

I guess I would just have to create a "tags" database. Hmmm.
Malkin, your tag could looks great. Did EM do the coding for the tagging system himself?
I'm just going to go ahead and say that there will not be a tag "suggestions" feature on CC.com that instantly suggests tags. It would require many things that your good ol' webmaster doesn't know how to code, like probably JavaScript. It does sound lovely though.

I gather that TCR was lovingly hand-coded in PHP as a first experiment - but don't quote me on it!!

Yes, it does use Javascript. I just used an existing base code and used PHP to generate the code for each keyword.

Something else that most forums have is a "Report" button for posts/topics. Would that be a good addition here, or...? |
