type | Tool | author | Doringo | updated | 3/29/2018 | version | 1.1 | The Drive Computer is a port of the same device of Creatures 2 fame, however it is based on the Creatures 1 computer in order to fit the environment and programming. This COB is injected into the temple basement (yet another reference to Creatures 2) and teaches your norns the 13 drive concepts which the vanilla Creatures neglected to do.
This project is the culmination of 18 days of hard work, tinkering and experimenting with the ways that C1 computers work, the C1 palette and the strict pre-requisites for the game to accept computer install scripts. The object scripts for this COB have been modified from the computer scripts existing in the scriptorium, however, the install script had to be written from scratch. I am very proud of my first C1 COB especially due to the many challenges which I overcame in the creation of it.

Thank you for this!

I adore this cob, it's beautiful, functional and useful... everything you need from a cob!

I'm not exactly sure when it comes to describing the challenges. It was mostly due to the complicated way in which blackboards work combined with some of the pre-requisites required to have a working one without the game throwing an exception crash. I also found that the game reacted weirdly to the hotspots that I assigned and even more unusually to the knobs which I used to connect them to activation scripts. In fact, for some reason just having them set up in the way it doesn't want made it impossible for creatures to push it, so I had to mess with it. One of the most useful references I used was Encyclopedia Nornica. I think another issue I had was getting the background of the blackboard right. I couldn't make it 100% black (transparent) because it cut a hole through the whole COB, so I had to match the palette using a number between 0 and 255. It took a lot of trial and error to find the color I needed.

I would be very interested to read a blog post in which you talk about the challenges you overcame while making this innovative COB!

Version 1.1 fixes a few severe bugs. Creatures pulling the computer will no longer skip multiple images ahead. As well as that, creatures will now actually be able to push the computer rather than just pulling it. (this was actually not a bhvr related error, believe it or not, but the way C1 handles computers requiring a very specific set up for seemingly hard-coded reasons.)

Thank you! I love how intricate these games are. I can't wait to try this out!

This computer teaches your norns to express their feelings.

It teaches 13 (I forgot to count the 0!) words which norns may use to express high drives (needs). Such as a norn stating that they are bored when their boredom drive is high, for instance. In the default Creatures 1 world, there is no way to teach norns these concepts unlike with nouns and verbs.

What do you mean by the "12 drive concepts" please? I'm sorry for my ignorance, I am new to the game.
The art looks absolutely brilliant!
