Rumors are circulating that Microsoft is bringing it’s worst feature from Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8. Microsoft plans are going to install the tracking of every website, every keystroke, and every program you launch on every current version of windows. Changing your update setting will not protect you either.

According to what I heard it’s not so bad. We already have such features on Android, Google, Facebook, Apple. Every tablet. Every smartphone. As of right now according to my sources there is no choice for this new feature in Windows 7 and 8. There is no way to remove it either. Those who are uncomfortable with such a feature might want to consider switching to Linux if you have not already.

As C-Rex said; sources please before you go fearmongering and Linux isn't going to change the fact that the vast majority of my games are Windows only. Sure, there's options like WINE but ultimately I'm sticking to Windows.

There's also the fact that the closest thing to what you described in windows 10 requires a multi step process to set up for each of the two users involved, then multiple email confirmations to start, and you can cancel it at any time.
It's a parent/child account system.

Plus you absolutely can block any unwanted update from being downloaded or installed, at least on Win7/8. That's how users of pirated systems avoid the dreaded KB971033, an update specifically targetted to detecting and locking out pirated copies. It's as easy as saying "no thanks".

There actually are a lot of games for Linux, they just aren't as commercialised and well known as Windows or Mac OSX ones. Lots of them are free, you can just open a terminal on Ubuntu or Debian and type sudo apt-cache search game to see a list. There's also this thing called DOSbox which allows you to plays tons of old Windows games, and, best of all, there's Creatures for Linux!!!

What is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything?

Whenever people mention "there's totally games for Linux!" I think of things like Minesweeper. :D And it's like yeah, technically, there's games for Linux, buuut... it's not the same.

I dunno about the changing update setting not protecting you part though. Unless a previous update changed something to open the way for it, it's just not going to happen. Besides it's not really going to be very convincing to me unless I get some kind of way to identify the said update (KBnumbers etc)

"This means Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can choose not to download the updates or, if they have already been installed, they can be uninstalled and neither operating system will automatically reinstall them without user permission" So why exactly are you fear-mongering enough that your recommendation is for someone to switch to a very different OS instead of ignoring the Windows updater or taking steps to remove these specific updates?

SteamOS is a non-factor until it's out of beta and accompanied by whatever hardware they have lined up for it. Not to mention it remains to be seen whether people will adopt it.

So can I play games like The Saboteur and Saints Row 4 with ease and an experience about the same as if I were playing on Windows? Ie no nasty slowdowns or issues, etc. (Creatures on Linux is actually irrelevant to me because I don't really touch the games at all these days)

Edit: Another important consideration for people like myself that hasn't been mentioned is driver support. Those new driver releases near or on a large game's release are generally pretty important to having a smoother experience when playing.

From reading the first post, I just get the impression that Norn_master was trying be helpful and didn't intend to scare people, even if he did make a mistake by not providing a source initially. He did start off by saying they were rumours too, not facts.

So, let's bear this mind and not talk to Norn_master as if he's a fear-mongerer. It's a pretty heavy term to be bandying about on our friendly little forum! :)

What exactly is your issue here? The above sounds hostile. This whole post was to bring attention and inform people to this as a possibility because this is an issue for some people with windows 10. If I was to cause fear and panic, I might make something up. Any fear mongering, you feel on your end is your interpretation of what I said. Everything anyone says is subject to interpretation. If you feel I was fear mongering, I apologize. It was not my intent.

People are aware of windows 10 having these spying issues. I wanted to inform those parties that it may concern here that windows 7 and 8 might have updates to install on your computer. This is not confirmed. This is rumor. Rumor. The fact that you can uninstall them like you claim may also be rumor. The guy who wrote it says point blank that he has heard nothing back from Microsoft. I interperet what you quote as his best guess. I cannot confirm or deny it at this time. We will have to see. Based upon what he said on the first page, it sound like it ignores your current settings. Second page where your quote from has a different tone to it. I suppose he edited his article.

Linux is the only system that I know that does not have the spying issue. Yes, you use any Google or Facebook you will be subject to it. Facts are, Anrdroid, IOS, Apple, Chrome OS, and Now Microsoft with windows 10 all have it. It is a marketable product for companies. My guess was that Zuckerburg started it. Microsoft is making money off the people that upgraded for free.

I am not talking about Steam OS. That is an operating system that you can try on your computer, that will be installed on steam boxes. I am talking about Steam. Downloading Ubuntu Linux, and then downloading the steam client from the store. That is different. Yes Linux, even steam OS will have a super small library, but you can play Wolfenstien 3D, Duke Nukem, and other older dos games in dos box. It may take some tweaking, but I know Linux can host windows files, so it can be done despite being marked Windows. It just means that it has only the windows version of Dos Box included.

No wine does not work 100%. I said that. I know cause I used it. It has glitches.
Saints row and the saboteur, you will have to check the page dealing with known issues. It may have slow downs, it may have graphical glitches. If it works at all, it does mean that you can play it. If your a hard core game looking for beyond 60fps in Wine, then I say not on your life. Driver support is key for any OS. Linux is all community made, so driver support may be highly erratic. The newest games you may have to wait for unless the game is Linux comparable on the steam client.

If the issues here at all bother you, and your a hardcore gamer stick with your console. If you don't want to play on a console, I can't help you. You may have to live with Windows 10, or the possible changes coming to Windows 7 and 8. Microsoft might very well change their minds about the whole update thing for 7 and 8. Wouldn't be the first time a big company changed it's mind due to huge public out cry against it.

You have a license for windows. You don't own it. Microsoft can add whatever the heck they want to it, at any time. It's their property. If they want to wreck it in such a way to try and force users to upgrade to windows 10, they can do it. They shouldn't because they would loose a lot of respect and customers. Doesn't mean they can't.

I loved bill gates's microsoft, so I assure you, that this is not a hate thing. I want people to be aware, because knowledge is power. :D

To elaborate on the point I've just made: Remember that here we treat each other with respect, and this includes being mindful of how we talk to each other. This applies to you too, Norn_master. You're sounding pretty hostile yourself. There's no reason why you can't discuss this civilly, even if you and Razgriz do have differing points of view.

I wouldn't rely or even recommend WINE to people, with how iffy it runs.

There are also fewer games for Linux, *but* if you look at published games from 2013 onward, you'll see a record number being playable on all major platforms. Every "newer" game I play, for example, plays in Linux just as well/better than Windows 7/8.

If you play super old games or super new games, Linux may be fine, but for every other game, stick with Windows and be vigilant and find ways to block their snooping.

I don't know if you still can in 7/8, but you should be able to disable automatic upgrades and then find the KB you don't want isntalled, tell it not to install them, then select "hide."

The Forbes link above shows which KB will install the (current set of) intrusions. It most likely won't be the last set, either.

FWIW avoid Windows 10 unless you're okay with force-fed updates and occasional internet hogging by the OS. :|

Right, apologies for my heavy wording I had no intentions of hostility or anything like that.

@CptMashek yep, automatic updates can be disabled and it's easy to ensure it only downloads and updates with your say-so in Win7. I have the update settings to such and I've not had much if any issues avoiding bad updates like the one that broke games like STALKER: Call of Pripyat. No idea if the same can be said with 8 since I avoided it like the plague.

I did some digging up on the issue myself and I found out that atleast 4 updates were given for windows 7 that were about the tracking service. The information that the updates were for the tracking service came directly from microsoft's support site for the said updates. I can't remember what KB number they had, but google should be your friend.
