Hey guys! I've updated my first post on the thread to include a free pond-life sim game I've been playing on steam, some of you might find some fun in it. c:

Bleh, I tried with Pinna, but I can't figure out how to install it through DOSbox. The instructions say just to type the name of the executable, but it returns "illegal command". |

Did you add in the .exe at the end? |

Pinna, through DOSBox? I don't understand... Are you emulating Windows on DOSBox or something? |

I did add .exe. and I just searched for "running 16 bit applications in dosbox" and followed the instructions http://www.freezenet.ca/guides/compatibility-and-emulation/how-to-play-16-bit-dos-gamesapplications-on-a-64-bit-operating-system/
I have an old win98 CD, maybe I'll try installing that on some virtual machine instead. |

It's a 32-bit Windows application, as far as I'm aware. DOS is an entirely different operating system than Windows, so there would need to be a specific DOS-based version of the game to run it under DOS.
Yes, I am old enough to have grown up knowing these things. xD
You should have better luck with the VM. I know Microsoft has their own solution, which should work fine. Otherwise, there is also VMWare. I think the Microsoft one just lets you run WinXP but I'm not sure. VMWare will let you install whatever OS you like on it. |

I thought DOS was the original operating system and windows just put fancy graphics to it? |
GimmeCat

Ehh, kinda. DOS stands for 'disk operating system' and it's what you had before anything like Windows came along. When that happened, however, DOS continued to live alongside Windows and could be booted into, much like a modern system can dual-boot Windows or Linux (or any other).
Besides how it looks, it's not the same as modern-day command prompt that we can open from the Start Menu. You had to actually shut Windows down first, because I guess running two OSes at the same time is a bit problematic. |

Yeah, I do remember booting into dos *is old too* and typing in the commands, but I was always told that windows is pretty much DOS, just with pretty graphics andwhen you get into DOS you strip the graphics away. It could be they were just trying to explain what DOS was and doing a comparison between the two though, it was an horrible long time ago xD |

The first post has been updated to include a new game, Falling Sands! My experiments on there can also be found here as images and notes in case you're curious about what kind of antics can happen in it. c:

A flower raising game has been added! Finally a gardening/ect game that's online, with the added bonus of being a 'click to ----' game that you don't need people to click on to work<3

So I just found this franchise called Wiggle Planet and it looks interesting. I think you need and Ipad or I phone to use this though.
The main attraction seems to be book "Peck Peck's Journey", which the wiglets "live in".
Here's a video about it. |

I'm playing Peck Peck's Garden and it looks much better on the phone than on the video, honestly. Very simple but funny...too bad the rest of the versions are apple only : s

Hey, I don't know if this counts, I skimmed for links and couldn't find it here so... Species is an evolution simulation that you can download for free while in alpha. It is very interesting with good music but most creatures tend to evolve into strange blobs eventually lol. Though you can also edit them directly.
Creator of the TWB/TCB genome base.

@Dragoler hey, good point! I don't think I have species up on the list. I'll add it in. c:

Free non-browser games? Oh I'll give you one alright; DMPC. It's a fan-made Digimon v-pet based off a number of the old v-pet series that Bandai produced. I played it ages ago and it certainly felt true to the toys. There's apparently two versions now, the original and one called DMPC Pro that seems to have gone a bit astray from the goal of providing a v-pet substitute.
Either way if there's interest I can provide a link after I've checked them for anything malicious since the original site is essentially dead (and a good chunk of the fandom is very far from what I'd call kind) |

@Razgriz that sounds like it could be fun, there's always room for desktop pets, and the list is sorely lacking in them c':
what operating system does it work on?

They work on Windows 7 although I'm not really sure about any other OS's. If they don't then no big deal, you can delete them with no fuss since the .exes are actually the games themselves no installation involved.
Fair warning in advance, the windows are very tiny and as far as I know there's no way to edit that. DMPC |

I've been playing flower game for a while, it really is lovely. once your plants are full grown, you can arrange them in your garden, and there are different morphs of certain species, some of which can only be bred for.
Viridi has very relaxing ambient music, and i love being able to "sing" to my plants, but i wish that they could divide/set seed when full grown, which might[i/] be added in an update if the idea is supported enough.

I've been following the development of a game now for a while, called Niche. You start out with a cute animal and then you are going to explore the surroundings, find food, and find more animals to add to your tribe. And also breed. There's a gene system in place with different dominance and powers. Like big claws are better on digging or fighting off predators. Big eared animals can hear better and can alert the others when predators are closing in etc.
I've been playing the beta/demo for a while and it's incredibly fun. And they are constantly adding in new things. Like a while back, they added in a sickness system. If it's really cold or something else that could trigger a sickness spreading then inbred animals in your tribe that have the same two gene-letters have an easier time becoming sick. And if the animals are too close to the sick animals then the sickness can spread. So you need to pay attention when you are breeding them etc. |

Earthtongue, which is on steam holiday sale, is a wonderful ecosystem simulator with two groups of life with a variety of species. the dev isn't active and was planning to add more, but the game as it sits is complete and playable. you interact with the world but it does not require micromanaging, or managing at all, to survive, although it does need it to thrive.
It has mushrooms, which i am rather fond of.

Have you guys heard of Lioden? You are a lion and you form your own pride, breed cubs, explore, battle other lions, participate in events and other things. It has realistic things and I'm not very good at describing.
If you register, can you please put 6149 in the Referred By field? It's my ID. |

I'm on lioden too, it's a lion survival simulator in the web browser. Quite fun |

I'm on there too! I don't really play often because there are a few too many "dailies" you have to keep on top of just to keep your lions alive. |

I'm glad that you have to rollover to a new day though, so your lion freezes when you aren't playing. Otherwise my lions would be long gone by now xD |

I played Niche, it's quite addictive, but I wish I had known that you can't save your game yet, before I played for hours and got attached to my little tribe of animals... |

|

yeah, the savegame feature is coming though! They have already promised, but it'll be in the later, close to proper release, as otherwise you'd have save-files all over the place, and the savefiles might not work with newer versions and such. But it's on their top priority-list for before release
Also, they are going to try and greenlight it on steam in like a week or so! |

I've played Niche for several hours on different occasions, it's addictive though very simple, and obviously needs some changes and more work to it.
It took me a little while to understand you can constantly breed the creatures without end, because I really expected there to be at least some sort of cooldown or 'compitability' needed. I'd like this to be a bit more complex in that sense, and give them longer lifespans to make up for it.
Anyway, they look SO CUTE though ah! I hope they fix the 360º head rotation tho .-.

With the sickness, you kind of have to keep track of family traits and their two letter-genes. If you do inbreeding then the offspring might end up with two of the same letters, like L L or S S, and they get more prone to sickness. So there's always that at least. But more complexity is always nice!
They ARE cute! And the new bunny they added for chasing for food. That one is so adorable I almost feel bad chasing it X.X |
