"By default, Microsoft gets to see your location, keystrokes and browser history -- and listen to your microphone, and some of that stuff is shared with "trusted [by Microsoft, not by you] partners."

You can turn this all off, of course, by digging through screen after screen of "privacy" dashboards, navigating the welter of tickboxes that serve the same purposes as all those clean, ration-seeming lines on the craps table: to complexify the proposition so you can't figure out if the odds are in your favor."-boingboing.com Just letting you guys know.

I've heard a lot of back and forth about Win10 privacy issues. People pointing them out, others saying it's blown out of proportion. I'd suggest erring on the side of caution!

My mum's office actually forbade the staff from downloading Windows 10. :o

Yeah, I am sooo waiting until they sort out the major security issues that windows 10 has. And I'm always urging all my friends to do the same. Not that anyone listens :/

I've heard about the Win10 security issues, and have felt very 'what can you do' about it, though I'm very unhappy about it ... I suppose it's concerning that that's the level of apathy I've grown to when it comes to new OSes being obnoxious. :\

Those are the exact same things that OS X / iOS / Android do. They are how Siri / Google Now / Cortana work. Their privacy policy and the usage collection is not really much different than the other mentioned OSes. You can't have a "useful" assistant if it doesn't know how to handle things, and since all the above are "cloud" based, they all "phone home" with your data.

I've disabled Cortana and disabled a few other things, and Windows 10 works the way I would expect it to. Live tiles and Cortana won't work, but I don't use them anyway.

Windows 8 also phoned home a decent portion of this data, too, but nobody complained (to this extent) then...

Only because there were a million bigger things to complain about in 8. :P

By most accounts, it wouldn't be considered an "upgrade". I've heard that 10 addresses a lot of the problems 8 introduced, but I'd still be wary of just now 'connected' it is.

I don't mind if an OS has inbuilt social/ad features, the problem is our inability to disable them without also locking us out of other things. It's feels kind of petty on Microsoft's part: "Oh, you won't let us serve you ads? Fine, then you can't play with this other thing! Nyer nyer!"

I have Win8 on my laptop, and it 's relatively fine, but I can't really figure out apps. I installed 4 random ebook readers before finding one that works, and now I don't know how to remove the previous three :P

I'm happily keeping Win7 on my main P****il it explodes or something. Microsoft please don't take that as a suggestion :P

I think this also would allow hackers to get your info more easily. I hope Microsoft fixes this.

okay first off, the reason why i didn't post this in the old topic is because it's basically dead now, so, here it is. Windows 10 not only monitors you and sends reports to your parents but your parents can also block you from visiting certain websites. This can be extremely dangerous for people who are trying to seek help from there parents that are homophobic/transphobic/down right terrible, because..well...it should be already obvious what can happen if they find out. Just look what happened to Leelah Alcorn. I'm not sure if going incognito or deleting your history will work, but please.
Stay safe, and spread this to people who are going through this. here's how to make it stop

That is opt in and requires everyone involved to have a microsoft account.
It is impossible to force that unless your parents know your Microsoft account password, since it must be set up from the child's account and involves multiple confirmation steps on each side.

Don't. We have it. If you want to, upgrade to 8.1. At least that has a start menu! Windows 8 eradicates the start menu, and makes it a complete pain to do anything. If you take my advice, Windows 7 is best.

It's all in the mind, you know.
