Rats!

So, first off, if you came here thinking "Aren't rats gross?" then this'll help you!

Rats are domesticated, which means that they crave human attention, and even if they escaped, they'd die if not found.

Rats clean themselves just as much as your cat, and you can teach them things, such as:

-Potty training
-Coming to their name
-Fetching
-Rolling over
-Jumping through a hoop
-Walking
-Doing specific tasks
And so much more!

If you want to compare the personality of a rat to another animal, it'd be a dog. They just love you and want your attention.

Ratty funfacts!

-Male rats are like lapdogs, while female rats are more active and more willing to do more extreme tricks
-Rats are almost guaranteed to not bite you! The only time they'd bite is if they're extremely scared or you're putting them in alot of pain
-You cat and dog are more likely to carry rat bite fever then a rat would!
-Rats are less likely to get diseases then your cat and dog
-Your more likely to get Cat Scratch Fever then Rat Bite Fever
-If your rat escapes it's cage, it'll either go for a walk and then go back to it's cage, go to you, or just go exploring and end up getting lost. If you think they got lost, put out some food and water for them. They're likely to go to the food and water, since they'd be dehydrated and hungry.
-Rats will not smell as long as you take care of them properly. Litter training them and then changing what you use for bedding (If you litter trained them, use fleece) around once a week. If you change their bedding too early, they'll pee all over their cage to make it smell like 'home' again, and if you change it too late, the cage will stink and their health will be in danger.

Rat varieties and looks!

The kind of rats you've most likely seen are either albinos, or black and white rats. However, there are so many other variations and colours. I'm going to post some pictures of the most liked/ common colours and variations, and then name the others and describe them.

Rat ear types!

Top-eared rat: The most common ear type you'd probably see.

Dumbo eared rat: A mutation of the rat's ears, making them lower and slightly bigger. No one knows the origin of the mutation.

Rat body types!

Dwarf vs. Standard rat:
Dwarf rats have, as you guessed it, the dwarfism gene. They're around 2x smaller then the average rat, but have no differences otherwise. Here is a good image comparing them.

Rat coat types!

Standard coat: The most common coat on a rat you'll encounter. It's smooth, soft but firm.

Rex coat: A mutation causing the rat's coat to twist and curl, resulting in a very soft, silky coat.

Double rex coat: A coat caused by having two strands of the rex gene. The rats have very soft fur, but their fur falls off, but doesn't harm the rat.

Velveteen coat: A similar coat to the rex, except instead of a curly coat they have a wavy coat.

Harley Coat: A coat type that gives rats greasy-looking fur as babies, and then long, whispy looking fur as adults.

Hairless coat: A variety of coat that makes a rat have peach fuzz with their eyelashes and whiskers still, or completely nothing.

Satin coat: A silky, smooth wavy coat that shimmers. Can be indentified easily as a pup if it has droopy whiskers.

Will continue in next post!

Rat eye types

Rats can actually have different coloured eyes! The eye types are...

Pink eyed: Usually in white, albino, siamese, himalayan or other light coloured rats, these eyes are a light-reddish pink.

Ruby eyed: A dark red that appears mostly on light-medium toned rats, although can occasionally appear on darker rats.

Black eyed: The most common eye colour that you'll see on a rat.

Odd-eyed: A case where a rat has two coloured eyes.

Rat colour types
Rats come in an amazing variety of colours! From brightly coloured, to miss-matched. I will be listing my favourites, as well as a link to a website with all of the colours.

Silver fawn/ argente: A rat with a light golden coat and usually ruby coloured eyes.

Quicksilver: A light, blueish silver kind of coat that usually has Ruby eyes.

More rat colours here

Rat marking types!
Rats come in a variety of markings, and I'll be listing most here. You can find them all on the same site as the rat colours.

Badger: A marking variety named after the facial markings resembling that of a badger's

Bareback: A bareback rat is a rat with colour covering their neck and head only.

Berkshire: A rat of solid colour except for the white covering their underbellies.

Capped: A marking which covers only the top of the head, leaving the body and chin of the rat white.

Irish: A rat that has a solid coat escept for a white marking on it's chest.

Hooded: Hooded rats are exactly like barebacks, except they have a stripe going down their backs.

Hooded downunder: Exactly like the above, except they also have colour going down their underbelly.

Masked: A rat that has colour around it's eyes, giving the appearance of a mask.

Husky/ Roan: A rat with a coloured top which spreads in a dappled pattern, giving the resemblance of a husky.

Spotted Downunder: A rat resembling a Hooded, with coloured spots covering it's body.

Striped roan/ Banded husky: A marking that resembles a Husky/ Roan rat, except for a line starting at it's eyes and ending at it's tail.

Variegated: A rat variety that looks like a bareback rat with blotches all over it's body and usually a white chin.

My friend actually had a pet rat that died recently. She said she always used to take him for walks and he was potty trained to go into a litter box. I was really surprised at first, but now that I know more about rats, it's less unbelievable. XD

They're so smart like holy crap. I love them so much <3. I've got two boys, a big, black hooded standard rat, and a smaller, black standard berkshire rat. The big one is dumb, really hyper, and scared of the strangest things, while the smaller one is more chillax, smart, and brave.

It's so cute.

I've actually been thinking about rescuing two rats later this year! I've never owned them although I've loved them forever and I used to own a crap ton of gerbils. I think they're too precious, I'm really excited. I really, really love dumbos.

That's good, and you should! Rats may only live 2-5 years (I had one that lived 6, actually), but they're a bundle of fun! Rats are honestly such odd dogs.

Very interessting facts and full of information, truly a awesome read!
I find it cool you put togheter everything from the neat facts to the cute pictures of different breeds and colors! Had a rat once many years back. He was a cute one and very gentle, named Spike - white with one creambrown spot and red eyes.

Rats need love too *.*
Theyre animals too and living beings.

Aww, he sounds cute NG! I find it funny that you named him 'Spike', since rats usually have dog-like personalities.

And yes, rats need all the love! Two of my friends want rats, but neither of their parents will let them get any. I wish people would give rats a chance... They're so... people-like I find? They have little hands, taste buds like ours, emotions, they laugh, have sympathy, dream, and so much more! They're actually researching them to see how similar they are to us! Whenever someone I know is planning to get a hamster or gerbil or something like that, I start ranting off about rats to them. Rats must be protected and loved <3

I agree, rats are incredible, so smart and loving and social... hearing about people's rats makes me really miss having them... I can't where I am, I'm renting a room and my landlord would have a fit. Hamsters and gerbils are so anti-social... They pretty much couldn't care less about people and have no desire to play, be petted, or be your friend. And their personalities are practically non-existent... really if you are even thinking of another rodent, I would say guinea pigs are worth a go, they have nice funny personalities and can be very friendly (but they are a lot of work to take care of, and can be pretty noisy, so be prepared)

Hamsters are cute and they tend to like to explore, but they are typically just generally stupid, ignore you entirely, and like to jump off of things (though they are cute when they stuff all kinds of food in their cheeks I have to admit, and they really love sunflower seeds)... Most of them also tend to be mean and are likely to bite when they are cranky (and avoid putting them in the same cage with each other unless you just have a couple of males, females are very territorial and they are loners in the wild).

Gerbils though are just plain unfriendly, it's not that they are mean or bite much, it's just very hard to get them used to being handled, they don't like it in general. With some work you can get them to tolerate it, but in my experience they don't ever really warm up to you... they'd typically much rather be left alone and stay in their little house or burrow, though they are social with each other.

I love all the pictures!

I only had hamsters growing up - that stopped when our last one, named Blackberry, was so grumpy he would bite and hiss anyone who tried to touch him.

The closest thing I've had to a rodent since then was a rabbit. Sadly, I would say rabbits fall into the gerbil category above - at least the ones I had. They were rather blank little things who lived to be between five to seven years old (pretty good for a small animal) and never recognized me once in all that time!

Now I just stick with cats so rats might not be great addition :)

Actually, I had cats who actively hunted and rats in the past. The cats began to realise they were not food, so they left them alone. c:

Yeah, rabbits are usually not particularly affectionate or interesting and often don't really care that much for associating with you personally, they tend to be pretty independent, though they do have some variation in personality a bit more like cats and you can get some friendly ones. They do live longer than most small animals though... I had a couple that we used to let roam the house (they were housebroken and only went in their litterbox), and one of them used to occasionally hop up to me and then stare at me for attention and seemed to really enjoy sitting in my lap and having its belly rubbed (it was a bit of a tyrant about it, really, it never got tired of it and would always seem like it was annoyed when I stopped). The other one was pretty much as you say though, didn't really like being held... it tolerated being petted and picked up but didn't particularly care about dealing with people.

Oh my goodness, I love rats. But they are so much more work then I can do right now. I have a parrot (terrible pets), that's already all my spare time right there. But I remember growing up with them, they often seemed to have more personality then even my dogs and cats. Now a close friend of mine has them, and one will come right up to you and aggressively groom you. That's the 'alpha' rat for you, very pushy! I love how they socialize with one another, they're like a little pack. I almost got two the other day, they were a pretty roan color with ruby eyes, and we were using them for a veterinary tech class. It's hard to resist them once you know what great pets they are!

edit: parrots are terrible pets compared to rats because they are not domesticated, do not thrive in captivity, and live way longer then most people's commitment to them.

Rats are cute :) I think I'd like to get some when I'm a bit more independent and responsible.
I'm glad to hear they do not bite, I've been bitten by hamsters a few times and I've been a bit freaky about rodent's mouths ever since, hamsters are loners though so I suppose they in particular lack tolerance for being handled.

Yeah hamsters are actually the most likely to bite out of any, they are loners in the wild AND territorial... They are domesticated though, most will tolerate being handled, especially if you get them used to it young, but some are just totally nasty little fuzzballs, and even the calmest ones can take a nip at you if you wake them up (they sleep like 14 hours a day) or if they are just feeling grumpy.

Rats are pretty much at the bottom of likelihood to bite... I've been bitten once by a very young one that had escaped and it was scared out of its wits from me chasing it around trying to get it back in its cage, but the rest of the ones I've had wouldn't dream of it. They might lick and groom you though, and they really love being held/carried and being petted (they love being rubbed and scratched between the ears).

They are REALLY nice, to each other and to people, extremely social... Studies showed they even have prosocial (altruistic or empathic) behavior, that is, a desire to help the group over themselves... Given a choice between getting food for themselves, or letting another rat out of a cage and sharing it, they will let the other rat out of the cage before going for the food.

P.S.:
Rats with teddy bears... D'aaawwwwwww [heart]...

I had a friend in-town who owned rats! I loved playing with them. They were so sweet! I remember my favorite of her rats had babies. I might not mind owning a couple myself one day...if I ever stop owning cats, that is. XD

Don't forget. Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember her, you are not alone.

This post makes me sad. We had a pet rat growing up that ended up having some kind of sudden freak health issue and died within a couple of days. :( I've really wanted more since I've been an "adult" (har har har) and even got to the point of almost buying some at a pet store one day, but I also have two cats who would definitely want them for lunch. Rats are seriously awesome.

Reminder for the third time, rats can live with cats! If they smell like you, they'll leave 'em alone! I had cats who actively hunted, yet they'd groom my rats.
