Mottos or mantras or goofy personal sayings can help motivate, define or cheer us up.

This topic is about sharing our common sayings and to help motivate and strengthen each other.

Here are some of mine.

"I rock out loud with an air guitar!"
"I try every day to be more kick-butt than the day before."
"If it can't be fixed by a good meal, it probably isn't worth worrying about."

You should share them anyway (in English and in Dutch). :3 The message is what's most important, I think.

"this is mine, and this is mine, And thiiiis, is mine...."
"Stop, in the name of love, before you hurt some-one...!"
"I am allllllll the winners."
"If you nod and say uh-huh, maybe they'll go away..."

That last one isn't really a motto, but I'm thinking and doing it nigh constantly, so I think it counts. The third takes advantage of a memetic phrase from homestuck to fuel Self-encouragement. The first and second are quotes, from Red Dwarf and Charlie's angels, respectively. (I have watched Red Dwarf, and I'm getting around to watching Charlie's Angels. The Red Dwarf quote describes a habit, the Charlie's Angels quote enforces one.)

Wow I got really in-depth on this one...

"Those brick walls were built for the people who want it bad enough to break down the wall." -Randy Pausch
"Always give 100%, whether you're sick, tired, or dying." -Todd Cheek (my amazing choir teacher)
"Stop being a [chicken] and go out and get it." -Dan LuVisi
...and sometimes: "Nnnnnever give up, never surrender!" from Galaxy Quest.

Those are some things I tell myself nearly every day. I have a lot of drive and motivation and a lot of it is helped by these quotes. :)

Awesome. :D

I just remembered another quote that I'm in love with, from the Game Grumps (not exact but it gets the message across).

"If you want to do something, just shut up and do it."

Kezune, that's a great quote. I had a friend who was in a drum corps who said something like, "If you know what's wrong then fix it." It seems obvious but people who don't like critique but want to be good should listen to that saying. ^^

I'm quite fond of "sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness". Also, I have a range to try to combat worry in various situations:
"Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" or
"It won't matter in a hundred years" or
"***** it, it's only money." (a variety of expletives can be used there, depending on circumstance).

I also want a snappy reminder that if you want a different outcome, you've got to do something differently - but I haven't found one for that yet.

Add me to the list of people who want to see lennmeister's Dutch saying - so long as it comes with a pronounciation guide. :)

My own personal mantra is "You never know until you know."
In other words, you can never know something until you know it 100 percent; never assume, never fall complacent in your knowledge without checking twice, and never be afraid to question even those things which seem most obviously true or false. True knowledge is unbiased.

Another quote which has helped me immensely in the past, but whose author I don't know, is this:

"Let us not look forward in fear, nor back in anger, but around in awareness."

Ooh, I really like that last one, chocosaurus! One thing my mom had to keep telling me while I was being tested for cancer these last four months was "Don't borrow trouble." It's simple but it worked because sometimes you just have to shut your worrying brain up. XP

@Nutter: I know I had a quote somewhere about what you are looking for but I can't remember it now, of course. If I remember what it was I'll post it here. This one is sort of related, I think, because it's a good reminder.

"We seem to attempt only what we assume to be possible." -Stephen LaBerge

Those are all great quotes! Keep sharing everyone, these are really fascinating!

I've borrowed my friend's copy of Dune by Frank Herbert recently. While I would probably connect with it better if I'd read it when I was a 15 year old boy, [nlaugh] I still found it amazingly powerful to come across a poem called the Litany of Fear in its original context.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

The litany is amazing - and really useful! I wish we'd been taught it in school instead of some of the stuff we had to memorise.

In a similar useful vein, there's Max Ehrman's Desiderata and Mary Schmich's Wear Sunscreen.

I've always used the one that Papriko posted. I must've heard your version and shortened it at some point. XD

"Hakunamatata" - old co worker used to say this when she got frustrated.
