Sparked by a conversation with Tarlia, I thought it would be a great idea to talk about some of our favorite adorable toys! I was spoiled rotten as a kid, and even to this day I like having some toys around. I have a pretty big collection of older Littlest Pet Shop toys. I remember that the turtles and hamsters were my first sets. They're still in pretty good shape: Thank goodness my parents attempted to teach me how to take care of my toys!

Recently, I've gotten into collecting Calico Critters (also known as Sylvanian Families). Those I could go on and on about for ages... They're so cute and adorable, and the quality is really nice. Makes me feel not so odd for being an adult collector! My dining room table has become their home for a bit, while I eat elsewhere. They're just so much fun, and just looking at them makes me smile!

What other toys does everyone either collect or remember from years ago?

I seriously loved the Littlest Pet Shop toys I had as a child. It started with that little grey cat that came with a pink travel cage, and then the parrot, I think... In the end I actually had the pet shop itself, which I could store all of them in when not using them. I'm very sad to see that the reboot of the series has changed them into hideous "anime-inspired" monsters with enormous heads and eyes. :/

And oooh, the Sylvanian Families. I actually had some of those when I was a kid too! I had the bunny family, the cat family and the frog family... As well as a single mouse and an elephant. I didn't have any furniture for them (not sure how much of that existed back then), but they tended to live in my Swedish doll house instead. My SO and I have been looking at what's around the shops these days and it's just so adorable, all of it. The colours are lovely, and there's so much detail! I would have obsessed over this stuff as a kid! I plan on inflicting these toys on my child, even if it is a boy. If s/he won't like them, at least I'll enjoy them. :P

As an adult I've also acquired a pretty good collection of Schleich animals, mostly wild animals. They're very detailed and realistic, and the baby animals definitely count as adorable. :) They sit on some shelves in my bedroom and I don't think I could possibly fit any more in without adding more shelves...

"Kitty Kitty Kittens" I have so many of them, I don't even know how many I have! And who could forget Norn dolls? They are very cute, I have three of them! I go to thrift shops and buy little toys just for their hats and clothes so I can put them on my norns! I also look for small jewelry type things to use as necklaces for them! So cute! X3

I've always had a thing for plushies. Even now, I still have a few lying around (their presence doesn't bode well for my social life, but that never existed anyway so no harm no foul). In the past, I had a lot of fun with beanie babies (as HavenHoney mentioned), in addition to whatever random plush I could get from a thrift store, a gift shop, etc.

Granted, the sorts of plushies I loved/still love aren't quite the same things people would find adorable. A whole bunch of them were aquatic animals - lots of fish, some whales, a pair of squids (I love cephalopods), etc.

Recently, however, there's another group of plushies that attracted my interest: Giant Microbes. They're exactly what it says on the tin - plush versions of microbes of all kinds, especially ones that cause disease. Among other things, there's the common cold, the Black Death, and lyme disease. They're pretty accurate representations of the microbes in terms of shape, though they're made adorable and sometimes designed to resemble the name of the disease.

I knew they existed for a while thanks to a catalogue we used to get a long time ago, but when I learned there was a website for them I just couldn't resist. So for a belated birthday present, my dad and I wound up ordering a petri dish of Brain-Eating Amoeba and a full-sized Chickenpox doll (plus a mouse for my sister). And I'm definitely going to go back for more at some point.

Edit: Added links in so people can see what I'm talking about.

I grew up with very few toys until I was eleven, but what I remember most were my teddy bear, my two beloved ponies, one of which was this one (The other one was a large purple one with realistic doll eyes, softish hollow plastic. Not brand name, but I loved her anyway). Also three small baby dolls, the ones with plastic heads and plush bodies. One in white, one in pink, and one in blue. Got to pick them out at the store because they were dirt cheap. :P Oh yeah, and another baby doll that was a gift from my grandma...

Sure, they were cheap, but they meant the world to me~

I have a penguin stuffy that turns into a pillow with a penguin face on it. It is SO USEFUL, because not only is it soft and nap-worthy, you can keep stuff in it! I wouldn't travel with-out it.

I'd forgotten about the Giant Microbes! :)

My favourite toys... one must've been the Family Tree House. I got this when I was tiny, having been glued to one at a friend's house! It was wonderfully detailed - they had a working lift, a fold-up slide, living room kitchen and bedroom in the tree and the dog lived in a bush outside!

I inherited a strange thing from my sister - it was a miniature toy garden collection - lawns, a pond, trees, flower beds, tiny flowers and plants, a dove cote, various other bits and pieces - in scope, it was like Lego - a free-form toy, but with the emphasis on gardening. I also inherited bits of my sister's spirograph, but I preferred a simpler version that I had - a yellow clear plastic disk with cut-out shapes in different places. You could turn the disk round part of the way, and use the shapes as templates to create patterns, which could then be coloured in. I spent hours playing with that! :)

I have some Calico Critters, which I adore. I also have a cute (or at least I think so) stuffed great white shark that is literally white and has blue eyes.

I hate to sound.. I dunno. Cocky? Is that the word?

Anyway, my favorite plushes are the ones that I've made. I think it's because of the time that I pour into them. I do have some plushes that I love that I've bought or were given to me as gifts but I'm just more drawn to the ones that I've made. I just love toys and making them, I guess.

Update: My Giant Microbes are here, and they're every single bit as adorable/awesome as I imagined. In particular, they're much softer than I thought they were going to be. My sister's mouse is really soft, but since that one's not mine I don't want to mess with it too much. Chickenpox, on the other hand, is fair game. *Snuggles it again*

Watch this space; I might upload pictures (I'm planning on taking a bunch, particularly of the Brain-Eating Amoeba since their site image wasn't very comprehensive).

After a ton of fidgeting, I finally manged to get a decent array of shots of the Giant Microbes. Unfortunately, the camera I used wasn't all that great, so most of these are fairly blurry.

Chickenpox: I never had Chickenpox as a kid, actually - I got vaccinated against it before it ever got me. I just thought the doll was cute, so I got it.

Brain-Eating Amoeba: When I first read about these guys, they scared me. Therefore, I decided to get these, and shortly afterwards my fear turned to fascination (to the point where the real organism is now my avatar at TVTropes). Unfortunately, the dolls themselves aren't as soft as the Chickenpox doll was - the fabric they're made out of is different.
Unopened Petri Dish
Opened Petri Dish (I wanted to preserve the packaging, and as it turned out that was easy enough to do - once I removed the plastic covering it, the lid came off without any effort)
Trophozoite Doll (A.K.A. the hunting, reproductive phase. Looks a little like a squid, therefore adding to the appeal factor for me)
Flagellate Doll (A.K.A. the "Screw this, I'm outta here" phase. I also call it the "Lima bean" phase since it's shaped an awful lot like one)
Cyst Doll (A.K.A. the dormant phase. This one took forever to get a decent picture of)
All the dolls together (This picture was Dad's idea - he thought the idea of my computer being attacked by brain-eating amoeba was funny. Would have been even funnier if I'd gotten one of the computer virus dolls)

White Lab Mouse: My sister keeps rats, so Dad thought this mouse would be a good gift for her. She hasn't seen it yet, but I'm hoping she gets a kick out of it at least. Of the three, it's probably the softest.

If any of you thought I was at all masculine despite being biologically male, throw that thought out the window. I take pictures of plushies and post them on the internet; look at how manly I am!

One of my favourite toys is a moose plush that my dad got me in 2002 from one of his work colleagues who shipped it over from Sweden. I still have him now, but he lost the blue and gold ribbon he wore around his neck, and his fur is all matted and has holes in it.

By the way Grendelman, those microbe plushes are freaking adorable! [nsmile]

Oh gosh, I used to love Littlest Pet Shop as a kid, I had a lot of those toys, but I don't remember what happened to them.

I collected Beanie Babies and still have my favorites. I always took the tags off even though people told me they'd sell later. I was a kid though and could never even imagine selling them!

I collect things that interest me now, I have some MLP toys, I collect an anime figurine or two, and recently bought this adorable plush cat, which is apparently called a Nemuneko(Sleepy cat). I found mine, it looks like this.

Then I found out there's a whole series of these cute Nemuneko, and I kinda want to collect them all now. I mean look at them!

So yeah, possibly something new for me to collect! I'll just have to buy them all online since they're from Japan, haha.

I thought my cousins' Batman and Robin action figures were adorable, much cuter than the Barbie dolls my paternal grandmother used to send me.

I've always loved plushies. My first one was a rabbit with a bell inside, so he made tinkle noises when he moved around. Now I have a chicken plushie my girlfriend and I call Junior. It turns out it's really difficult finding cute chicken plushies.

I was a nerd growing up, when I was little I loved my spirograph set, my erector set, comics, books, my starter electronics set, my dungeons and dragons books, and my commodore 64, which I loved to write programs for. I did like animals though, mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc, and had all of them at one time or another... I do think I'd have loved those giant microbes though... those are cool.

The mice probably helped inspire me to like creatures as much as I do... I had all different fancy colored varieties, and I'd crossbreed the ones I liked for color and temperament to get certain results, and sell most of them back to the pet store I got the originals from, just keeping the ones I wanted for the next generation, and I'd keep records and make pedigrees for them and stuff. I got some pretty unique looking ones, mice are pretty good for that since they have large litters, so there's always a good chance you will get some offspring with traits you wanted from the mating.

About the closest thing I can think of to an adorable toy I had (besides my commodore 64... it was so cute... [nlaugh]) is a superstretchy spiderman and hulk I used to love playing with when I was really small. Though I did make little paper miniatures for playing D&D, including a cool miniature of Tiamat I still have with my old dice, and one time me and my mother made a plush owl for my grandmother, because she really loved owls... I have it now on my shelf, it's really cute, and it's something to remember her by... my grandfather gave me the owl when she passed away.

I used to love LPS! My first set which I got when I was 8 was the elevator apartment one, which you could attach appartments to! (Which I never got, so I was apartmentless.) If I remember correctly, I had a male white cat, A male brown husky, and a female rabbit. They were very plain, and I loved the husky the most. Unfortunely, my dog chewed it's head off. Also, I use to have a doodle bear, which you could draw on and then wash off. It glew in in the dark in some places also! Lastly, I have this mcdonalds hellokitty necklace I got when I was 3. It's kinda broken, and doesn't light up anymore, but hell would I freak out if my dad got rid of it. I'm so attached to it, it isn't even funny. Lastly, I remember my favourite toys were legos and bionicles. My brother had legos and bionicles, and I would always hijack them, loving them so much. I'd build things that weren't even anything, and be proud! Although, my brother who is 6 years older than me (But we barely fight!) would wreck my creations, like I would wreck his.
