How to make an old DS "see" a fresh C3? | |

I've been playing Docking Station on and off since around 2002 (I've never been deep into the community, but I rediscover the game every couple of years and get mildly obsessed for a while). I've downloaded tons of mods over the years and generally built up a lot of baggage with the game. In this, my latest period of being all about the game, I decided to finally buy Creatures Exodus on GOG and install it. However, my old Docking Station install does not realize that C3 is now available! It doesn't seem to recognize that I have C3 installed, so I cannot make docked worlds. I did try the Docking Station that Creatures Exodus installs and that "saw" C3, but once I migrated in my old files it no longer recognized that C3 was there. Obviously, I want to use all my old stuff, but I'm not sure how to force these two games to play nice.
Some tech stuff:
-I installed Creatures Exodus in my own specific directory, not the default
-I deleted the Docking Station folder that was in the Creatures Exodus folder and moved in my old folder into the Creatures Exodus folder, probably deleting something important in the process, I'm sure
-I haven't messed with the C3 folder at all
Any advice for a "casual" oldbie. |

So, you're saying that the Exodus version of DS was able to recognize C3 UNTIL you moved all your old files/mods/etc over, right? In that case, here's what I would do.
First, remove ALL of your old files from the Exodus DS to make it a totally clean slate. Then, verify that it recognizes C3.
After that, start adding your old files to Exodus DS, ONE BY ONE. This is tedious, but it's the only way to pinpoint exactly which file(s) are causing the issue. Essentially, what you'll do is move a file over, boot up DS and check if it still "sees" C3, then repeat for all of the files you want to move over. Eventually, you'll run into the problem files and know which ones to keep out.
Hope that helps! Keep us updated~

Actually, I simply copied over my entire old DS folder and overwrote everything in the Exodus install. I foolishly assumed that Docking Station "seeing" C3 was simply a matter of being in the right directory. That... does not appear to be the case. |

I managed to get it to work by:
- Install DS wherever (I used "program files(x86)/Docking Station" ) and give edit access to non-administrators
- Install GOG C3 and DS wherever (I used the default GOG installation directory, C/GOG games/something. I made the installation folder up front, making sure that the folder where I installed C3 was given edit access for non-administrators.)
- If stuff ends up in my documents, I copied it over to the folder where I intended to install C3.
- Adjust the machine.cfg of C3 to get all stuff from the default directory, not the my documents directory
- make a symlink in "program files(x86)/Creatures 3" to GOG's C3 installation
- Edit the DS machine.cfg file so the auxilliary bootstrap stuff points to the correct C3 folder (I pointed it to the symlink, but technically the symlink thing is probably not needed. I just liked seeing a Creatures 3 map above my Docking Station map. Personal preference I guess?)
- Use DevThing to install the 'no-cd' patch
And then it worked for me

How do you edit .cfg files? I've never messed with them before. And what kind of stuff do you need to edit within them? |

You should be able to open and edit them with any text editor |
