C2 VirtualBox Issues

Hi everyone. This is my first post on the forum - I'm hoping somebody out there can help me experience one of my favourite games again!

For the past week or so I have been trying to find ways to run C2 on my laptop. I read that many people have success with Virtual PCs, so I downloaded VirtualBox, installed Windows XP and then proceeded to install the gog.com version of C2 on that system.

However, when I try to launch the game I get a 'server busy' error every single time, no matter what I do. It gives me the option to 'switch to...' which only opens the start menu, 'retry' which does nothing, and a 'cancel' button which is greyed out.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any fixes for it?

...what?

You mean C2 is doing that or the installer? if it's the installer i'll guess that its' trying to get some kind of data from somewhere other than the internet port, 80, and that's being blocked by the VM's firewall.

'Server busy' is a common error when the game is trying to launch but the system doesn't do it quick enough. It most commonly happens when your system is not already running in 16-bit colour and wants you to switch before the game loads up.

In that specific case, you should be able to switch to 16-bit colour, then click 'switch to' after the game window loads and the error message will go away.

If that's not what's causing it, I'm not sure what else could be. Are you running creatures2.exe, or launcher.exe? You should always use the latter.

No, not the installer. I ran the setup just fine on the VM, and when I try to launch the game I get an error message that looks like this after the world switcher.

I seem to get the same error message when I run from creatures2.exe and launcher.exe, makes no difference. Switching to 16-bit color just seems to make the situation worse - just a grey box where the loading banner usually is and the same error message.

Ok. Is your game installed in Program Files, by any chance? That might be the culprit. If you uninstall (and reboot the VM, because Windows) and reinstall into C:\Creatures instead, does that run?

Well, I discovered that you were correct and reinstalled into C: \Creatures but now I am seeing a different error message:

"SMALL FURRY CREATURES MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Make sure you have the Remastered patch applied.

Yup, I have applied the patch. Same error message.

I don't ever remember my old CD being this much of a pain in the ass on XP...

Me either.

Some more things to try:

-Make sure the creatures2.exe and launcher.exe files are both set to Win98 compatibility.
-Set the VM's display to 16-bit High Color so Creatures doesn't have to try and switch it itself. This is mandatory; the game won't run at 32-bit True Color mode.

So, I have paused my attempts at running C2 on a VM for now as it seemed to be flagging up more issues than solutions.

Thank you, GimmeCat, you've been really helpful and I feel like your advice got me much closer than I would have gotten on my own.

C2 runs on my Windows 10 system, but the lag is hard to deal with. I think I'll just have to stick to C3 for now until I feel like tinkering again.
