I want to know more about gadgets! | |

I study electrical engineering and love everything to do with it. I noticed that a lot of the gadgets in C3DS are related to components in circuitry (gates, switches etc).
Are there any resources documenting advanced usage of connectable gadgets that I can apply my knowledge to? I'm looking for something a bit more complex than, say, a sensor that sounds an alarm when a creature with toxins leaves an area. I want to go the extra mile and see the full extent of what these gadgets are capable of (seeing if I could engineer some sort of binary adder circuit, for example), and I'm interested to see if there's any documentation that could help me in my engineering.
Also/P.S.
I realize the primary usage of the gadgets is to built systems for your Norns, and if anyone has some particularly complex usages you've found I'd LOVE to hear about them!! but when I see this kind of stuff my mind immediately jumps into engineer mode and I start having ideas that have nothing to do with Norns. ^^;
I can never resist the urge to build a calculator or something...

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone's made a major resource on the uses of the connectable gadgets. The majority view just seems to be that it's just a feature that wasn't implemented as well as it could had been (like a lot of things about C3/DS).
For complex uses of connectable gadgets however, one setup I like to use involves usage of Clucky's Timer, Egg Finder Advanced, and Mini Recycler alongside some default C3 gadgets to create an "Ovicidal Machine." It steadily removes older eggs, greatly speeding up the procession of generations in wolfling runs. I wasn't the one who came up with the idea; that was Minisauron. But I've found this setup so useful that it's always a part of my wolfling runs.

There's a few resources available on the Connecting agent page at the Creatures Wiki.

Most of gadgets are just I/O (inputs and outputs), however there are a few downloadable gadgets that decrease the limitations of the feature (such as those by Mirality.). Gadgets can Input/Output up to 255 (and possibly more but only intended to go to 255) and can also be a negative signal (which can be used for things such as firing the sludge gun in a different direction.) |

Being a drop-out from electrical engineering myself, I can tell you that gadgets are annoying. You do not have logic levels for example. Every signal is a brief pulse and that's it. You do not instant get a 0 if the sender disconnects. You can not hold a signal either, unless you code the receiver to have some sort of short-term-memory.
This becomes especially obvious when you examine multi input devices such as the C3 AND/OR gates. With the little green lamps on the inputs, you can see how it stores and eventually discards signals. This has to be done as otherwise the inputs would need to come in frame-perfect at the same time.
This is nothing like TTL for example. You can not do many common circuits either, like an RS-NOR latch. What'd it do anyway? Without constant logic levels, it is useless anyway.

I use the radio boxes, count gates and the pulse switches to automate a few things around the ship like the volcano to feed the gnarlers and keeping the aquarium stocked.
You have to be a bit careful about where you put things as ettin gadget kleptomania breaks things merrily. If you use the DS door locks, you can put your "base station" there and let the radio boxes do the rest at a distance. I usually include the vocabuliser in the radio box network as it works around the "drag a norn to a computer" problem. |
