Creatures 3 errors

Whenever I try to start and or enter a world in creatures 3 standalone I get this error:
C:\Program Files\Creatures 3\Bootstrap\001 World\Butterfly.cos
2 13 1 9 (Butterfly)
Expected a string at token 'gall'
... v va51 16 sets va06 {@}gall new: simp 2 10 11 va06 4 ...

Sat Aug 08 00:47:23 2015 - Kittie - 1.147

With just about EVERY .cos file.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the whole game and it doesn't seem to work. The only thing I can think of is if i'm not uninstalling everything and I'm not aware of it. I uninstall the game by the uninstall button. I've tried going to program files and making sure the Creatures 3 folder is gone afterwords. I don't know how to uninstall it even more than that.

Any clue what's going on?

What release of Creatures 3 is it? GOG, retail, CIE, one of the ports? Have you had it working before, and this is a new error?

That's very odd, as it's *not* a place a gall command should be showing up... In the Creatures 3 bootstrap, it's only used in 3 files (GUI 1.cos, Norn Egg layer.cos, creature history.cos). The fact that it shows up when you're *entering* a world makes me suspect this isn't specifically a Bootstrap problem, though.

You've deleted the Program Files C3 folder, which is good, as when uninstalled it leaves behind third-party additions/exported creatures/etc. However, if you're using the GOG version, you'll need to delete its My Documents folder as well.

Is your install non 'stock' in any other way?

This is a creatures 3 version that I bought back in the 90's when it was still Creatures Labs.

The very first time I installed it today (first time on this computer) it worked fine when I made a world. I then installed a few norn breeds, the official C3 update, and a third party update that is supposed to make the stock creatures in the world (like mosquitoes) not become extinct, and to have a better more manageable population. I suspected it is this that caused the problem since it called for installing .cos files in the 001 bootstrap folder which over-rid some of the original files of the same names. However I expected if this was the case that an uninstall and clean base game re-install would fix this. (why hasn't it?) The mod files were found in this site "http://www.seeyou7.net/creatures/creatures3/agentlist/agentlist.html". It would take a while but I could probably find them again...

I searched my "documents" folder and didn't find anything creatures related in it. If there is some in a documents folder i'm looking in the wrong place and you'll have to point me in the right direction.

Hmm.

Okay, retail C3 is good, no need to worry about anything MyDocs related.

You're right that wiping the install, deleting the Program Files folder, and reinstalling *should* get rid of any Bootstrap edits. I trust you didn't reinstall the mods immediately after the wipe, so that makes the entire situation pretty dang strange.

I'm stumped. For kicks, you could try installing Docking Station and seeing if you encounter the same issues creating a docked world-- that might narrow it down.

Docking Station still works fine, though I can't delete any of the 3 worlds I created years ago for some reason (it comes up with some sort of Windows service pack error. I played Docking Station instead when C3 failed to cooperate.

You're correct when I re-installed C3 I just tried to run base game. Some part of me thinks that i'm not getting it completely uninstalled though because when I re-installed the second time, the world I had previously created before the uninstall was still showing up as an option to go into. I'm going to try uninstalling again and re-installing. I'm going to create a world to test and see if it's actually getting wiped completely. If the world is still there after I re-install then I'll know.

EDIT: Well, uninstalled, even did a registry cleanup in case there was anything lingering in there. Re-installed and the previous room is still available.. I don't know why it's not getting completely uninstalled. The good news is I still have the downloads that I installed that probably caused this whole mess.

One is Minor Fixes from here: http://creatures.virtualheaven.nl/

The other is the Norn Egg Layer Backup from here: http://grendel.creaturesforum.de/agents1.htm

The next one is the Norn Woodland Fix Pack also from here: http://creatures.virtualheaven.nl/

EDIT 2: I did a windows search for Creatures 3 files and found a backup in appdata/local/virtualstore/programfiles. Uninstalled again, reinstalling now.

EDIT 3: AHA! That did it! I had to delete the C3 folder in Virtualstore/programfiles! YATTA! I won't be installing the egg layer backup or the fix packs from now on.

I've used the minor fixes and all of Vampess's fixes without issues, but I think the backup egglayer threw errors last time I used it, so don't use that.

Maybe that's what did it. It could have been any of the three.

EDIT: Nope. I installed the two fixes and it's doing it again. For some reason my game just doesn't agree with em.

Come to think of it- I didn't even think to ask what OS version you were running C3 on. I realized 'virtualstore' sounds very much like a virtualization/backwards compatibility folder.

As far as I know, that folder is found in at least Windows 7 (which I know it definitely does because that's the OS I'm currently using) and later. Which is why I often suggest looking for it and checking in there in case the uninstaller missed some files; at least when I manage to spy the thread and read it through all the way. I found out about that folder being another hiding place for Creatures files on accident while I was developing my radish COB and couldn't figure out why my updates suddenly weren't taking effect; the OS had hidden an older copy of the files that were altered and were using those instead. Its the weirdest thing.

But I'm glad that you managed to find what was causing your issue, kittie! The way these newer systems treat older games is odd and often frustrating, but at least you know where to look in case something goes pear-shaped and everywhere else checks out.

From the depths of Deep Lurkspace I emerge... And suddenly can't remember what it is I came up for.
