The Silent Hand

I was using the "kill hots" command the other day in Docking Station, and I believe I accidentally used it on the speech bubble coming from the hand. I can no longer speak in one world... And I can't figure out how to fix it. Perhaps it's not even a fixable mistake? I've tied re-injecting a bunch of .cos files that seem to relate to the hand and speech bubbles, but with no luck. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Better yet, would anyone happen to know of a solution?

Moral of the story: Be careful with "kill hots!" I thought I was, but apparently not. My Norns rejoiced in my silence, though I certainly wasn't happy about it. Ha ha!

Thanks for any help!

I had this happen to me as well. You can try what I did and see if it helps:

Open the CAOS command line and type in something simple like 'help' or 'okay'

CTRL + SHIFT +C to close it

Try writing something normally as you would usually type.

You should be able to communicate with your creatures again.

This worked for me, though it could have been just a fluke! Give it a try and let me know if this helps. If it doesn't I won't recommend anyone else to try it. Lol.

I'm back after 11 years. Holy dooley!

Seems like there's still no solution for the killed speech bubble.

And

ject "DS speech bubble factory.cos" 7

isn't working.

For those who ran into this problem. The only way is to revert to a previous saved world.

Your old saved world can be found in "My World" folder where you installed the game.

How to Revert:

[1] Look for a file with .bak extension in it.

For DS users, it should be: "SpaceAndAllThatIsOutThere.bak"

[2] Delete "SpaceAndAllThatIsOutThere" (the file without the .bak extension)

[3] Rename "SpaceAndAllThatIsOutThere.bak" to "SpaceAndAllThatIsOutThere" (remove the .bak extension, windows will give a warning, continue by clicking "yes";)

[4] Restart your game and load your world.

You should be able to get back to the previous saved point of the world. (Only works if you quit the game using Ctrl+Pause/Break right away, and didn't "double save" using Ctrl+R)

NewSaveDialog fix by Dement is recommended for those working on your world and want to have control over the auto-save function.

Alright, the speechbubble factory was a mistake of me. Try this line instead:
ject "DS textentry.cos" 7

The speechbubble factory handles bubbles from creatures and F1+leftclick and such. The textentry seems to be the "special" bubble of the hand.

That works like a charm. Thanks! :)

Memoing the code down because that "kill act" can be easily repeated. :P

Thank you, Papriko! I know this topic is a few years old, but I've seen it referenced multiple times when people run into the same issue. I just tested this in my broken world, too, and it's been fixed! Yay!

I hope I do not need to point out that this is the DS solution, though. For C3-only, please post again. I will try my best to find a solution, but otherwise there are stilll the others.

Adding that line to autorecovery kind of works too! :D

How to:

[1] Open up "(game folder)\Bootstrap\010 Docking Station\autorecovery.cos" file with notepad and look under the line:

* gui (topleft, inventory, options, creature menu)

There, you will find a bunch of ject related commands, eg auto recover the inventory if you kill it.

[2] Add this behind the line with all the "or totl"s

or totl 1 2 3 = 0

[3] Add this code to the bottom most line with all the other "ject" lines.

ject "DS textentry.cos" 7

The code should look like this:

* gui (topleft, inventory, options, creature menu)
subr gui
doif totl 1 2 13 = 0 or totl 1 2 35 = 0 or totl 1 2 11 = 0 or totl 1 2 12 = 0 or totl 1 2 14 = 0 or totl 1 2 3 = 0
ject "ds gui - topleft.cos" 7
ject "ds gui - inventory.cos" 7
ject "ds gui - options.cos" 7
ject "ds gui - creaturemenu.cos" 7
ject "DS textentry.cos" 7
endi
retn

[4] Save the file when you are done.

[5] Now, in the game:

Start a new game and try killing the speech bubble.
Your speech bubble should return automatically.

For existing worlds:

Use Ctrl+Shift+C to bring up the CAOS command

Type in
ject "autorecovery.cos" 1

then type in
ject "autorecovery.cos" 7

Done! :D

No more worries of killing the bubble when using "kill hots"! Yay!

Hope this helps! :D

Why would you ject 1 first? 7 already contains 1. It's ject 1, ject 2 and ject 4 in a single line.
