Yessssss this is exactly what the Creatures Community needed to hear! If anything is going to make a new and completed warp for DS closer to being a reality, this is it. Considering the recent drama about Creatures Online, this is some well-timed and exciting news! [ncrying]

It is a good step in the right direction indeed! Unfortunately it only affects multiplayer games that store information on a server though, so DS doesn't count under it.

Actually it would probably at least partially apply to DS, since the server has to store login information, chat logs, send creature files, etc. Actually, I take that back - Without having mods, you couldn't even play DS offline! You could probably argue that DS is a mulitplayer game that requires online functionality in order to run just because of that, so it very well may be covered by these new regulations, unless there's something else I'm not accounting for. Hmm, while that is true the fact that we do have mods that let us play offline and we don't miss critical functionality from using them might still nullify it... or maybe the mods do not count for this... it would be hard to tell.

We would really have to ask someone who knows law.

That's a toughie actually, true! You get stuck between technicalities like that. While you can technically still trade creatures, get into your game, and so forth WITHOUT the official servers, that requires installing mods and going into your game files and altering them. Even then, it renders several in-game features such as the chat and free-wandering of creatures between worlds via warp portals useless.

If you buy Docking Station off of GOG.com in the Exodus pack, one of the games you're paying money for is technically non-functional unless you alter its code, basically. I bet if you argued that, you might be able to count Docking Station under the new law, because otherwise, you're paying a company for a broken and unplayable game! You're right, though. You probably would need somebody who knows law to make an accurate statement on the issue, but I thought that would be an interesting point to bring up!

People have been doing this with no objections from game creators as far as I know anyway, but it's nice to see that this might actually be seen officially as a legit practice rather than a grey area.
