Steve Grand, creator of Creatures working on a completely new computer artificial life game - even if it is legally impossible to say that is an officially Creatures game - but it is comparable to Creatures.

I am proud to have become a backer of this project this morning; anything I can do to help Steve Grand get a game like this off the ground! It sounds awesome just from reading the overview and watching the video, and what better way to shake off those "Where's Creatures 4?" blues?
Without meaning to sound pestering; if you like what you've seen so far, please consider backing this project by making a pledge. Steve Grand has until April 8th 2011 to raise the minimum sum of $27,000 he needs to fund Grandroids, and I'm sure some of us can afford to dig into our pockets. Even if you donate just $5, or even $1 - every little helps!
Imagine how a game like this could revitalise our community, let alone increase awareness of the Creatures series; a very exciting prospect to say the least.
And to quote SpaceShipRat over at Creaturetopia:
Remember, newer people, Steve Grand is the mind behind Creatures, Gameware Development is merely a few people left over from his original company, Cyberlife. Don't be put out by the lack of norns, better a game that sticks to the principles behind Creatures, than a mindless rpg with norns in it. Edit: Steve Grand has posted an update with words of thanks! |

This might just be the best birthday ever (even if the monetary exchange bit has been reversed XD ). I am so so SO happy to see that this might be getting off the ground after all these years.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

This are four thing I wonder:
1. If no norns, what creatures does it have?
2. Will it run on mac
3. Does it have creatures-style "fanmade content" agents, breeds ect
4. How exactly do I go about funding it? |

sam999: You can find out three of those four things by reading the text and comments on the project site. As for what creatures... does it really matter? Something entirely new, I'm guessing. |

I can't give money, but idea sounds *interesting*. However I wonder how those alien creatures would look like. I hope they will be cute like C1 and C2 Norns!
I'm a hardcore christian first, and a creature breeder second.

I donated 75 bucks - was the 3rd person to donate that amount :T It's no exaggeration to say that Steve Grand was one of my inspirations for learning to program and doing a comp sci degree, so he deserves all the money I can give him no matter what the game turns out to be like. I've spent a long time pondering the concept of a 'planning' AI, but since I'm no expert I never got anywhere with it - I hope he can deliver on his promises with that! |

I probably donated more than some people would think I should have, given my current financial situation, but I felt like it was... compensation, almost (and not nearly enough at that). I discovered Creatures at a very difficult time in my life. If I hadn't had the escape that the series offered me I'm not sure how I would have ended up. That series means more to me than I can logistically describe to people.
So I'm beyond happy that I have an opportunity to help bring this new game to life.

Not gonna lie: I would totally play a mindless RPG that took place in Albia.

Every little helps. And even you can't afford to pledge anything, you can always support Grandroids in other ways!
I just can't believe that there are now 70 backers and we've collectively raised $16,205 already, with still 38 days to go!! Guys, we're awesome.
I think this is just the kind of uplift we've needed for a long time, and here we are, finally, pulling together to help fund a new ALife game... Everything about it is so enticing so far, I've just increased my pledge in order to see more. My Dad thinks I'm BONKERS, but he doesn't understand. |

Haha, claim to fame right there.
I'm not the only one who nearly cried when I first watched the video, am I? Please tell me I'm not. It was just the background music, and the whole sentimental value surrounding Creatures and whatnot. That alone was enough to convince me to part with my monies. |

I didn't cry, but I did get all sentimental and start giggling like an idiot about halfway through because holy flurking schnit this is real!!1!
My Dad thinks I'm BONKERS, but he doesn't understand.
Oh man; I haven't told anyone outside the CC that I donated to this project because I don't think anyone would get it. They'd just tilt their heads aside at me with baffled stares, wondering aloud, "You gave this man money to fund a project that might not even get finished?!"
But it's Steve Grand and this is the successor to Creatures and asdfghjklimnotinsaneiswear!

He just doesn't understand the amount of money I've pledged; I think it's a Dad thing! He does know though that Creatures has been a HUGE part of my life, how important the community is to me, he even knows about and reads Ask Laura - it just felt natural to tell him.
Like you though, I wouldn't tell anyone else; too much explanation would be required and they'd probably look at me as if I was a Grandroid myself!
Edit: My boyfriend just pledged, even though he doesn't play Artificial Life games and doesn't know anything about Creatures (well, apart from the gibberish I occasionally rave to him about!); that's true love. |

Don't worry; even if you're unable to pledge, there are many other ways to get behind the project! Steve Grand wrote in his blog:
If you aren’t in a position to pledge then I quite understand – I’m not either! – but if you can help spread the word by tweeting, blogging, facebooking or pinning notices to telegraph poles then I really appreciate that too. The wider the news spreads, the more chance I have. Thank you. |

This is insanely great! I love to hear that virtual life games, and especially Creatures-like from Steve, are still coming.
Sadly I can't give money, because I'm underage. I can ask if I can spend my own money via their CC, but I don't think they'll understand why.
I'm just going to volunteer in other ways if possible. Telling it to friends is good, right?

I am honestly floored that 30k was pledged in less than a week. But I'm so, SO happy.
(Every time I see someone suggest "naven" as the name of the new species, though, I want to bang my head into a wall because that word's taken on an entirely different connotation in my mind thanks to my headcanon. X[ )
