Greetings.... Normally I'm pretty shy & not fond of crowds, contests or things like that, but I always love to explore new areas, which is what draws me to the island currently. I wonder what new critters & plants I might find there, maybe I can take some home with me. I wonder if I will see any boney grendels on the island, they are so cute! Hmmm, I will have to see if I can find the stuff to make a plushie version of one so I can carry it around & snuggle it. I wonder where I would find the parts for it....
I don't think I will be bothered by the cold, but I hope my cyber eye doesn't lock up while I'm on the island. It can be so troublesome to fix it sometimes. My teleporter already broke so I have to wait like everyone else to get to the island. So crowded waiting here..... Em will be assimilated.... I got to stop saying that. It's not like I'm part of that crazy hivemind thing anymore.... Resistance is Futile. Must... stop... saying... that....

EEEEKKK!!! I almost overslept!.... Oh thank goodness it's still light. I wanted to get to island before nightfall. I may be nocturnal, but a long cold swim in the dark doesn't sound like much fun. How would I be able to find any sea shells to use for the fangs & claws of my boney grendel plushie? I'd better get swimming... or flying... both will be cold, maybe I'll switch between the two. Not sure if I'll get there before the sunsets. Looks like my first view of the island will be by moonlight.

Silly me, I was in such a rush because of running late, that I forgot to date & title my data log entries. Must not forget to do that again. How would I find the entry I'm looking for if I don't keep them labeled properly?

Day 1 Reaching the Island :

The cool air felt nice over my wings as I flew toward the island. At least at first anyway.... Just as the sun was setting, I started getting hungry & cold. I think I was only 2/3rd's of the way to the island at that point. Luckily I spotted something tasty looking in the water....
Dive, dive dive! Brrr.... That water was cold, but that school of zander fish was yummy. That yummy food was warming me right back up. I speared a few on the tip of my tail for a snack later, & deciding to give my wings a rest, I continued swimming toward the island. At least until it got too dark to see the island clearly from the water.
Time to rest my tail, back to the air! Just enough moonlight peeking between the clouds to guide me the rest of the way to the island. Eeewww.... the sea water started freezing in my hair... & to my scales & fur.... Going to have to pry them off as soon as I land on the island. Oh well, may as well munch on a zander to keep me warm until I get the change to pry the ice off.
It's too dark to get a good look at the island by the time I actually reach it, but there's just enough light for me to see a nice large looking snowdrift. Dive, dive dive! Ah the snow made such a nice thump when I crashed into it. Left a nice mernorn shaped hole in the drift too. The best part is that crashing into the snowdrift broke off all the ice that was still clinging to me. Yay!
I think I may have loosened my cyber eye though... the images from it are a bit ...snowy.... Bad pun, bad pun... Too bad the other borg norns lost most of their sense of humor when they were assimilated. I could almost hear their voices groaning in my brain. Staticy or snowy... both words fit, but snowy is more fun.
Hmmm... better find shelter for the rest of the night. I'm not going to sleep in the snowdrift I crashed into... the huge hole in the top & side is like a great big sign post saying 'Something yummy in here.' Need to find a slightly better hidden snowdrift to dig a burrow into. Well, back to the air to look for a better hiding spot. Heheh, maybe the lack of tracks leading to or from the norn shaped hole in the snowdrift, will confuse someone if they find it.

Several hours later...
Ah.... there we go, dug a nice deep burrow into a nice deep snowdrift. I thought I saw something while I was search for this spot, I think it was a norn, kinda shadowy colored I think, but I didn't get a good look. I'm pretty certain when the sun comes up that the entrance to my burrow will be hidden in the shadows for most of the day. Claws sure come in handy for the quick digging of burrows, & the mertail works even better for beating the snow into a more solid wall. Yawn... naptime now. Explore more of the island after a good rest. The light may be annoying, but at least I'll be able to see things a bit better.

Day 2 - First daylight glimpse of the island.

By time I crawled out of my burrow, it was already snowing. At least the clouds kept the light from being too bright, I don't want to rely on my cyber eye more than I have to, it's still a bit messed up at the moment. Time to get back into the air & see what I can find. Food, plants, animals, other creatures... all would be interesting finds, but... first things first, to the ocean to look for food!
Ah... the soothing gray of the snowing clouds is so tempting, I can't help up dance through them as I fly toward the sea. Darting into them, disappearing among their wispy mists, before diving down, chasing a cluster of snowflakes before swirling back up into the clouds again.
All too soon I hear the sea, the sounds of the waves calling me out of the clouds, making my tummy rumble with hunger. Gliding just below the clouds, I scan the sea for any signs of possible food. Hmmm, is that shadow that I see under the water what I think it is? Dive! Wheeee!
The loud splash I made, scattered some of the school of shrimp. Yay shrimp! This was even better than I hoped for, these shrimp will make excellent bait for bigger prey. Diving deeper, I swam under the school of shrimp & started swimming circles around & under them. Gradually tightening my circle, I forced the shrimp to swim closer together, & closer to the surface as well. Soon I had them clustered trapped just under the surface of the waves & I waited for what I knew would find them soon.
Splash! Splash! Splash! Yay! Just like I hoped, there were sea birds close enough to see the free shrimp meal waiting for them. Diving into the water, the birds snapped up mouthfuls of the trapped shrimp, silently I waited for my chance to snatch a few of the birds.
Crunch, snap, crunch... I only killed 3 of the birds, there was no need to be greedy, & that's all I could carry after all. One in each claw, & one on the tip of my tail. The birds kept diving after the shrimp as I swam away, chasing the shrimp school toward the bottom of the ocean as the shrimp fled. Once I was well clear of the birds, I took back to the air, flying toward the island again. Brrrrr, the ice is forming on my scales, fur & hair again. Good thing it's a short flight to the island. I'm diving into the nearest snowbank as soon as I find one, let the snow absorb the water & get it off my skin before it freezes too much more. Brrrr....
Wheee!!! Thump!!! It's so fun listening to the snow when you slam into it like that. Ah, it feels so nice to feel the freezing water leave my skin & scales as I roll in the snow. Although I still have to shake the snow off once I'm done rolling.
Huh? Did I just hear something? Uh oh, back to the air with my birds! I start flapping back towards the cover of the clouds. I don't even make it all the way to the clouds before I feel the bird on my tail start to slide off. Oh no! I flick my tail up, trying to keep it hooked on the tip of my tail, but instead I send it flying. I watch in a mix of amusement & slight horror as I see it fall toward a norn walking along the sea shore.

Yikes, I'd better disappear back into the clouds before they see me & realize I was the one that dropped the bird. I don't want them to think I threw it at them on purpose....

Day 2 Entry addition...

Ooops, just as I reach the clouds, I realized that I was in such a rush to reach the clouds that I dropped one of the other birds too. I didn't see where that one landed. I hope whomever finds it, like the taste of it. I wouldn't want the meat to go to waste. Well, at least I still have one bird for breakfast.

Week 1, day 3, mid morning -

The rumble of thunder woke me from my sleep, looking out of my tunnel, I saw it was sleeting. Yuck, sleet... it's no fun flying through that stuff, it makes my wings heavy, & with it lightning out there, I really don't want to fly. Looks like I will be slithering across that snow when I go hunting & scavenging today. Oh... I hope I don't encounter anything that forces me to make a flying escape, I don't want to get hit by lightning. Well, at least the snow will be nice & slippery so I can slide most of the way to the sea.
I'll have to remember to dig some extra tunnels after I've found some food. If I find enough food, it would probably be a good idea to have some place to store it for those days when I can't find anything.
Well, off I go... sliding to the sea, wheeeeeeeee!!!!

Data log: Week 1, day 3, late morning -
Wheeee! I found some great hills & snowdrifts to slide down as I work my way to the ocean. I can't help but scream in delight as I slide down them, it's so much fun! Sometimes I just have to climb back up to slide down again, even if it does slow down my journey.
Every so often as I slide toward the sea, I hear something. I stop & freeze in place each time I hear an odd noise, waiting till I am sure there is no danger before continuing. Is anyone else crazy enough to be out in this nasty weather? I hope they don't get hurt if they are crazy enough to be out here. It's slippery out here...

Data log: Week 1, day 3, late morning scare -

After sliding down an especially long hill, I got slightly lost I think. By the time I slid to a stop, I was much further away from my original path than I thought I was. Using my claws to help pull me along faster, I started slithering in the direction I thought the sea was in. After a while I noticed an odd scent & heard some angry sounding grumbling. Darting into the nearest shadow, I held completely still while hoping whatever it was didn't come any closer.
No such luck, I could hear the ice covered snow crunching as it got closer to where I was hiding. Moments later, I saw it as it walked over the snow drift I was hiding behind. It was another very angry & scary looking norn. Hissing, I flared my wings in warning & took to the nasty skies as fast as I could. That norn looked really angry, I don't want to be near by if it's angry at me.
I couldn't fly very high, or for very long, not with the concessional bolt of lightning crossing the sky & the ice weighing my wings down. Landing at the top of a nearby hill, I slid down the far side of the hill, further away from the angry norn. Picking up a bit of speed from the slide, I glided part way up the next hill, speeding up my escape a bit. I didn't slow down again until I was sure I was safe. Trembling, I paused next to a cluster of shrubs, waiting until after I calmed down to continue my journey toward the sea.

Data log: Week 1, day 3, Is that a cave?

After I was calm again, I continued sliding down hills toward the sea. Each time I passed a cluster of bushes, I paused to take a closer look at them, trying to see if they were different from the ones I already knew of. I was hoping to find some of those weird ice fruit plants I heard someone mention once. I think I remember hearing about ice apples, ice plums, ice raspberries, ice blueberries, ice carrots, wait, ice carrots aren't fruit. I can't remember who told me about those weird plants, maybe I wasn't the one who heard it. Maybe it was one of the other borg norns that had heard of it & I ended up getting a few of those memories while I was still part of the borg hivemind before I went rogue.
Well, so far, no luck. None of the shrubs looked like they were the strange plants I was looking for. I continued on my way with a sigh after each disappointing find. After nearly another hour of sliding toward the sea, a dark shadow caught my eye. Slowly crawling closer, I investigated. Oh, it was a cave, but I think I saw movement inside. I had to make sure, my curiosity demanded it, so I snuck closer. Soon I could see that was something moving inside, wait, there were two somethings inside the cave.
EEEEEKKK! As I was peering over the edge of the snowdrift, I lost my balance & started sliding down the hill. In fact, I slide right past the entrance of the cave & crashed into another snowdrift. I crashed into it so hard, that I was buried in it completely, not even my tail was sticking out of the hole I left in the snow. It took me a minute to get myself unstuck & turned around. Blushing hard, I remained hiding in the snow for a while longer, I hope no one saw that... it would be so embarrassing to be found like this.

Data log: Week 1, day3, I think I was spotted...

Cautiously I poke my head out of the snow, looking at the cave to see if my crash was noticed by the beings inside. As I look at the cave, I see two norns, one of them holding a torch & I notice that at least one of them is definitely looking at me. Yikes! I duck back into my hole in the snow, almost certain that I am blushing hard enough for them to see it, even from that distance. I'd better get out of here before I'm get even more embarrassed! I'm not sure how long I hid in that snowy hole before I finally worked up the courage to dart out of the snow.
Digging my claws deep into the snow & shoving with my tail, I push myself out of my snow hole as fast & hard as I can, trying to launch myself back into the air. "Owwww..." I guess I was in such a rush to get into the air, that I tried to open my wings before I was completely out of the hole. Snow flares around me as my wings try to push through the snow & fail. My wings twist painfully as they hit & get tangled in the hard crust of ice covering my snow drift. Instead of lunging into the air like I had hoped, I go tumbling across the snow again, sliding down hill away from the cave, stopping only when I slam into a cluster of bushes. "Uh oh..." I think I'm tangled in the bushes... so embarrassing.

Eeeewwww.... The ice freezing to my fur & scales feels yucky as I struggle to get untangled from these bushes. Being stuck upside down doesn't help any either. I'm going to have icicles growing in my hair if I don't get out of these bushes soon.

Data log: week 1, day 3, rescue?
As I was struggling to escape from the bushes, I heard the crunch of snow as something approached. Eyes wide with fright, I look around wildly, the icicles in my hair clinking together. One of the norns I saw earlier was approaching, carrying a pile of branches. Yikes, I was spotted! I could feel my skin heating up in painful embarrassment. I watched it approach while I trembled in fear & embarrassment. I hope those branches weren't for cooking me....

Data log: week 1, day 3, Yup, rescue...
I can't help but jump in surprise when the norn starts talking to me. Curse my painful shyness that keeps me from being able to answer as she talks to me, all I can do is blush even harder. I hold still as she helps me out of the bushes, who knows how much longer I would have been trapped there if she hadn't helped me, maybe the icicles in my hair would have grown long enough to freeze to the snow under me. As soon as I was untangled from the last branch, I darted around behind the thicket of bushes, & peeked out from behind it shyly, still blushing hard. I barely manage to whisper "Thank you... for helping me..." as I watch her & wonder what she will do now.

Data log: week 1, day 3, off to the ocean again...

After rescuing me, she told me that she & her friend were staying in the cave & that I could visit if I wanted. I can't blame her for heading back to the cave as fast as she could after telling me where it was, the weather is still pretty nasty & her friend is waiting. The growling in my stomach reminded me that I was suppose to be hunting or foraging. I'd better get to the ocean before anything else happens. Maybe if I find enough food, I should drop some off for them as a thank you gift for helping me out of those bushes. I hope I find plenty of food so I can share it.

Data log: Week 1, day 3-4, Ah, the ocean at last -
At least the rest of my trip to the ocean was uneventful, & finally the sound of the waves on the shore greeted my ears. I slide across the sand eagerly, splashing right into the incoming waves. Ahhh... the water felt so nice after all that cold icy sleet. I can just feel the ice melting off of my fur & scales. It feels so good. I have to fight my way through the waves to get to deeper waters where I could really swim. Diving deeper into the sea I started looking for some type of tasty food.
I spend quite a few hours exploring that particular stretch of water, the sky turning dark as the sunsets & I continue foraging.
I look not only for food, but for something to carry it in. Tasty kelp & various sea grass seeds, are easy to find, finding something to carry the seeds in, is harder to find. My claws wont work too well for weaving strands of seaweed & sea grass into a basket to carry things in. I find the occasional small clam or fish as I keep looking & snap them up like the small snacks they are.
Ah.... finally, as I swim into the deeper waters, I find the remains of a large shell. It kinda looks like top half of a partly grown giant clam. The bottom half is nowhere in sight. I wonder what managed to pry open the shell & eat the clam, it must have been pretty big. I carry the heavy shell back to the shallower waters where the kelp & sea grasses are. It's really dark by these time, so it's a bit harder to find the seeds, but my cyber eye really helps with seeing in the nearly complete darkness. Using my claws to scrape the seeds off the stems, I start filling the shell. Covering the bottom of the shell with a thin layer of seeds & then I start tossing in different types of kelp & seaweed on top of them. The occasional clam & oyster find their way into the shell too. When I found a pretty large tangled cluster of floating seaweed, it occurred to me that maybe I could use that as a net. Leaving the shell hidden at the base of an interesting rock formation that I was certain I would be able to find again, I swam further away from the island, looking for that swarm of shrimp I had used as bait.
As I swam, I noticed a faint glow in the water, swimming toward it, I did find a school of shrimp, but I don't think they were the same shrimp from before. These shrimp were glowing. Looking down, I could see that this was where the sides of the island dropped away sharply, going down into the really really deep waters. I wonder how deep they actually go, maybe all the way to the abyss?
Well, shrimp are shrimp, hopefully glowing shrimp taste just as good as the normal not glowing shrimp. Swimming under them, I let go of the seaweed & let it start floating up toward them. When it was close enough, they starting climbing on it & nibbling on the leaves. I waited a bit longer before I grabbed the edges of the seaweed cluster & started pulling it together, balling it up to capture some of the shrimp inside the seaweed ball. Most of the shrimp got away I think, but the few that I grabbed & munched on as they passed me seemed to be pretty tasty. Examining the ball of seaweed, I could tell that there were still several handfuls of shrimp inside, from the glow coming through the leaves. Keeping a tight grip on the ball, I swam back to where I left the shell. It took a bit to find, but the shell was still where I left it, but I think something had eaten some of the kelp I left in there. The shell looked a bit emptier than when I left it. Putting the ball of shrimp & seaweed inside the shell, I started swimming toward the shore, pausing near a very large cluster of very tall kelp to wrap the entire shell in some of it's leaves. I didn't want anything to fall out while I was carrying across the snowdrifts & hills. Once I was certain that nothing would fall out, I continued swimming toward shore.

Hmmm.... how odd, the water to my left started feeling warmer. I had to look & find out what was causing that warmth in this cold winter water. Turning away from the shore, I followed the increasingly warm water to it's source. Maybe the island was volcanic & the heat was coming from a volcanic vent? It was several more minutes of swimming before I saw the source of the heat, & I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. It looked like a cluster of sponges, corals & plants.

Some of the plants looked like aquatic versions of a strange type of plant I had heard of before. Ember plants. Ember flowers produce lots of heat, growing in clusters to make the surrounding area suitable for themselves, but this was the first time I had any clue that there might be some that were able to grow under water.
Ouch.... I stop swimming closer, the water around the cluster of plants & sponges was so hot it was becoming painful. Reluctantly I retreated from the hot water, I didn't want the clams & shrimp inside my shell to cook. They might not taste good when reheated. Looking around carefully, I marked the location of the tiny ember reef in my mind so I could find it again later. Some of those plants looked like they were about to produce seeds or fruit, I knew I couldn't leave the island without taking some samples with me. They could be useful, if I could find a way to harvest them safely.

As soon as I crawled up onto the beach, I made sure there was still water in the shell to keep the shrimp & clams alive, then I dove into the the nearest snowbank & started rolling in the snow. The snow absorbed the water still clinging to my scales & fur, drawing it away from me before it could freeze & get stuck in my fur. Ahhhh... feels nice not having ice in my fur. Huh? Wait a moment, yay! It stopped sleeting while I was under the water. Now it's just snow. Snow is much nicer, it doesn't weigh down my wings as much, even if it is hard to see through.
Once the snow had drawn the last of the water from my fur & hair, I grabbed the shell & started flying back toward the cave, planning on leaving at least some of the food as a thank you for that norn that helped me out of those bushes. Wow... this shell is a lot heavier than I thought.
Several times on the way back to the cave, I nearly crashed as the weight of the shell became too much for me & forced me back to the ground. Each time I was forced to land with a heavy thud, usually into a deep snowdrift. I think I almost crashed into a tent once, but the snow swirling through the air made it hard to be sure if I had actually saw a tent, a house or if it was something else. The faint scent of fish brushed my nose as I flew away.
It was almost dawn by the time I made it back to the cave. I crashed into a snowdrift just outside of the cave, I think it was the same one I crashed into earlier. I was just going to leave some of the food along with a thank you note there outside of the cave for them to find, but my wings are so tired & sore from carrying that shell. I don't know, maybe I should ask if I can rest in the cave for awhile before returning to my burrow.

Data log: Week 1, day 4, morning crash...

Cautiously & with a bit of embarrassment I poke my head out of the hole I made in the snowdrift. Looking into the cave, I see one of the two norns starring at me. "Eeeep!" I pull my head back into the hole, blushing hard in embarrassment. It takes me a few moments to calm my nerves & poke my head back out of the hole, pushing the seaweed wrapped shell ahead of me as I slide out of the hole & onto the snow in front of the cave. Blushing hard I hold the shell in front of me & with the shyness painfully obvious in my voice, I ask "Is it okay if I rest here a bit before returning to my burrow? I bring gifts of food...... as... a... thank you... for the... help yesterday...." It feels like I'm blushing hard enough to melt the snow I'm standing in.

Data log: Week 1, day 4, cave rest time....

It's nice & warm near the fire inside the cave. My shyness is still keeping me from saying much, but I'm glad that they can eat the plants & seeds I brought, even if they don't like the shrimp. At least the glowing shrimp can provide a little bit extra light as they swim around in the shell. It seems sad that they don't like meat, it's so tasty. Shrimp taste best when fresh, squirming & swallowed whole. They make such a nasty crunch when you bite through the shell & feel that gross burst of wetness. It's like chewing eggshells, yuck. I guess I'll wait till later to eat the shrimp, I'm still full from all the snacking I did while I was swimming. Maybe the pet crab they have wandering the cave will want some shrimp too. I think I should have brought more food, if the clams & shrimp aren't going to be eaten, there's really only enough food for breakfast for three, with a small snack for afterwards. We'll have to look for more food for later. It's so warm, I just want to curl up next to the fire & shut my eyes. Maybe I'll take a nap.

Zzzzzzzzz......

Data log: week 1, day 4, restless dreams & nightmares...

I couldn't help but stir restlessly as memories I didn't want to remember started to creep into my dreams. Memories of my earliest days as part of the borg hivemind. Tiny whimpers escaping me as the memories of being paralyzed as the borg collective took over my mind & rewrote it to their whims. My thoughts & memories being stolen, only the most useful being kept & added to the hivemind databank. Everything that was me, being replaced piece by piece with what the borg wanted me to be. The struggle, the fight to retain what I use to be. I can barely remember what I was before the borg got a hold of me. The only thing truly left of what I was, is the desire to be free of the borg hivemind, the refusal to submit to their will. "Resistance is Futile." No it wasn't! I was free of you! I'm not part of your hivemind anymore!
I snapped a wake with a start, not sure if it was the strange howling outside, the nightmarish memories or my own voice talking in my sleep that woke me up. My wings flaring open with fear, I hiss & look around wildly, trying to remember where I was.

Nightmare twisted memories blurred my mind, making me forget where I was & what had been happening. I bolted from the cave, desperate to avoid recapture by the borg norn. All I knew is that I had to flee before the borg found me... again.

Data log: week 1, day 4, Oops...

The shock of crashing into something & landing in the cold snow, shook me out of my confused daze. Looking around, the place looked somewhat familiar, as if I may have seen it before, but under very different conditions. I think I had crashed here earlier, when I was carrying the shell back to the cave. Oh... I had better get back to the cave & apologize if I scared anyone.
Just as I was about to take off again, a blue & white norn stepped out of that tent I had nearly hit this morning. Startled, I accidentally hissed at it. Blushing hard I clapped my claws over my mouth as I realized what I had done.
I saw he was trembling in fear & I blushed even harder. I don't get why everyone is scared of me, I love how I look, I don't see anything scary about it. Pulling my claws away from my face, I apologize for scaring him & I blush even harder as I explain that I'd had a really bad dream & hadn't been fully awake.
When he offered me a piece of fish, I took it shyly & thanked him. It smelled & tasted really yummy. I'll have to find something to give to him as an apology for scaring him, him seems pretty nice, like the other norns back in the cave. Maybe he'd like to meet them? I tell him about the cave & the other norns there, & offer to show him where it is. I really do need to get back there to make sure I didn't scare anyone there.

Oh well, I probably won't ever know what it was. After I told him where the cave was, I leaped back into the air & started flying back to the cave. Flying slowly so that he could follow me if he wanted to. As soon as I get back to the cave, I really must apologize for scaring them & explain about the nightmare I'd had. Data log: week 1, day 4, what's that?

About half way back to the cave I saw something running along the edge of a a snowdrift. It was an off white color, with faint marking of pale blue, & it looked to be slightly larger than a fox. I don't know if it was the critter that had been howling earlier or not since this one was silent as it ran across the snow. I lost sight of it as it disappeared into a thick cluster of bushes.

Since the critter hadn't seemed to notice me, I continued flying, & after a while, I reached the cave. When I landed I could see that c1anddsaddict was looking a bit worried & nervous. Blushing hard, I apologize for scaring her, & explain why I'd run off like that. I also tell her about the other norn I had met & the critter I had seen on the way back.
After Laura gets back, if they ask for details about the nightmare, I'll tell them, even though I'd rather not remember it. I hope that dream wasn't a warning of the borg hunting me down again, I'd have to warn them about the dangers of the borg if it was.

Data log: week 1, day 4, back in the cave.

When I got back to the cave, c1anddsaddict was still there, cuddling her pet crab & looking a bit confused & worried. Blushing hard I apologize & try to explain, "I'm sorry about running out like that. I didn't mean to scare you & Kankan like that. The horrible nightmare I had left me confused about where I was & I thought I was being hunted again. If you want to know why the nightmare caused me to react like that, I can tell you, but it would probably be best to wait until Laura gets back. That way, if it happens again while she is around, it hopefully won't scare or confuse her." I also told her about the other norn I met & that I gave the norn directions to this cave. "I'm not sure if he followed me here or not. I flew low enough & slow enough for him to follow me all the way here." I also mention the strange fox or wolf like critter I saw.
After we've rested quietly for a while, c1anddsaddict asks me to watch the camp while she goes & explores the cave further. Okay, I can do that, but I worry a little about her going alone into the deeper cave. What if she stumbles & looses her torch, or gets lost & hurt? Sigh... maybe next time I can go with her, I love exploring new places.

While I wait for c1anddsaddict & Laura to come back, I play with Kankan, gently claw wrestling, & letting him grab my stinger to use my tail as a swing. Wow.. it feels like they both are taking a long time to come back. As I worry & wait for them, I start humming a soft little tune to myself. Nothing special, just a little song that the one who rescued me from the borg hivemind would sing sometimes to comfort me when I was scared.

Lost to the memories
Lost to the melodies
Lost to the voices in your mind
Cast aside your fears,
Throw away your tears,
Fear not the memories,
Fear not the melodies
Fear not the voices in your mind.

It's lonely waiting here with no one to talk to.

Data log: week 1, day 4-5, campfire stories...

I was really starting to get worried, they both were taking so long to return. I was just about to leave the camp to look for one of them when c1anddsaddict returned from the deeper caves looking as nervous & worried as I felt. She calmed down a little bit as she told me what she had found, & while most of the things she described made me almost as nervous as she was, it also made me ache to go see it for myself. When Laura finally returned I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing she was safe. I was certainly glad to see the food she had brought, being stuck in one place always made me nervous, & not being able to leave the camp to forage & hunt, had certainly made things worse.

After a delicious meal, we settled ourselves around the fire & I offered to tell them the nightmare that had sent me running away earlier. "I will warn you, it is a very unpleasant story, I hope it doesn't give you nightmares after you've heard it." I gave myself a small shake, my skin growing a bit pale as I prepared to tell the story of my nightmare... & my past.

"A long while ago, I use to be a normal norn, living a normal life wandering the forests, deserts & swamps of Albia, until I was captured by a member of the borg hivemind. I don't even remember my original form anymore, all I can remember is suddenly hearing an odd humming noise behind me & someone suddenly saying 'Resistance is Futile'. I found I couldn't move at all, I couldn't even turn to see who or what it was standing behind me. My mind & body were suddenly filled with horrible pain as I heard that same voice say 'Em will be assimilated'. My flesh felt like it was being torn apart as cybernetic parts were forced to merge with or even replace parts of my body, I could feel my bones cracking & warping as they were forced to reshape themselves to my new form. My head & skull were completely remade as my head was forced to become that of a borg norn. While my body was forcefully being remade, I could feel them scanning my mind, digging through every tiny corner of my mind as they fed any useful knowledge I had back into their hivemind & ripping out whatever they didn't bits they didn't need. Even though my body couldn't move or fight back, I still had a little bit of control in my mind & I tried to resist & hang onto the remaining scrapes of my personality as they flooded my mind with their brainwashing."
"I must have managed to hang on to a few pieces of myself, for even as my body stood there & on it's own began to link itself deeper into the borg hivemind, I fought against the thoughts & memories that started to flood into my mind. It was like drowning in a sea of cold knowledge. No warm feelings, just cold empty memories of places I've never seen, instructions for how to work machines that I had never known existed. A loss of almost all emotion, a loss of fear, worry & sorrow, but also a loss of joy & happiness. A raging curiosity to seek out new information was left behind as well as a constant burning desire to bring others into the hivemind, to remove from them the same feelings that had been removed from me. The only pleasure I could feel was when I found or saw something new to the hivemind. I do not remember how long I was trapped in that mind numbing & completely controlled state for that first time."
"Yes, I said first time. Eventually something happened & the shredded scrapes of my personality managed to take control of my body once again to break away from the borg hivemind, & I ran away as fast & far as I could. That was where I woke up from my nightmare, & in the confusion of having just woken up, I couldn't tell reality from memory. That's why I had fled from the cave the way I did. I may have been able to awaken from the nightmare this time, but for me during that section of my past, the nightmare continued."
"Unfortunately my freedom that first time did not last long. I was hunted down by one of the other borg norns & once again, my body was assimilated & re-merged with the hivemind again. Several more times I managed to break free only to be recaptured & assimilated. Each time loosing more fragments of my personality even as my body lost more of what remained of my original form. My body absorbing & picking up traits from every borg norn that captured & assimilated me."
"I do not remember how long this went on, most of my memories were lost each time I was assimilated. Sometimes the assimilation was not properly done & my body would be trapped in constant enraging pain. I think sometimes that the pain actually helped me break free again, for the pain made it difficult to pay attention to the borg directives. It's rather messed up isn't it? To be hoping for the pain...."
"The last time I broke free of borg control, I was almost blind with agony & anger, it wouldn't have taken them long to recapture me, but I was rescued by someone. She stole me away to some place safe & took the pain away. When I woke up, I found myself looking like this. She had repaired my body & gave me a new beautiful form. She could not give me back my memories or my original form, but she was able to give me a new chance to live free of the borg hivemind. I could still hear the faint whispering of the hivemind echoing deep in my mind, but it was heavily muffled now & easy to ignore. Sometimes bits of knowledge still come to me from the hivemind, but it hasn't been able to take over my mind again... so far anyway."
"I stayed with her for awhile longer before my desire to explore grew too strong & she let me go my own way. Since then I've been traveling alone, never staying in one place for very long. I never know if some of the borg norns will follow me, trying to hunt me down again. I hope they don't find me on this island, because I don't want them to find & assimilate any of you." I let my voice trail off softly.

Data log: week 1, day 5, surprise guest...

As I was telling the story, the norn I had met earlier finally arrived & joined us in the cave. Even though it was getting a bit too crowded for me to feel comfortable, I was glad to see him arrive. I think after I finish the story & answer any questions they have, I will go hunting for breakfast. I've been in the cave too long to feel comfortable anymore, & it will be nice for them to wake up to fresh warm food.

Data log: week 1, day 5, into the night sky

When I mentioned I was thinking of leaving the cave to go hunting for breakfast, I couldn't help but blush hard as Fly offered me some his fish. I quickly wrapped the fish & a few of the remaining berries in some of the tasty plants & set the fish to bake slowly among the coals at the edge of the fire. Still blushing slightly, I let them know that I was going to go outside for a while, to take a flight, & maybe a swim. I'd been trapped in the cave all day, I really need to get out and wander about. Ever since I became a borg norn, & especially since I broke free of the borg hivemind, it's been very hard to stay still for long. "Don't wait up for me, I'll probably be out for a while."
It felt so good as I climbed into the cold night air, only the scattered clouds for company, that I couldn't help starting to sing as I flew toward the ocean.

Not bound to air, land or sea
I'm able to wander truly free
Able to wander where I please
To dance my way through the air
To feel the wind in my hair
To ride the waves of the sea
To let the currents carry me

Opps, perhaps I shouldn't sing so loudly, I might scare or confuse someone again. They might think they are hearing voices.

Taking a different route to the ocean than usual, when the moon peeked out from behind the clouds, a gleam from something other than snow caught my eye. Glancing down I marked the area in my memory, I'll have to come back & check it out tomorrow when the sun is up.

Data log: week 1, day 5-6, Such strange glowing fish...

The moonlight looks so beautiful on the sea, it almost seems a shame to disturb it as I dive toward the water. Rather than splashing into the water the way I normally do, I decided to just glide over it for a while before setting down gently in the water, barely making a splash.
The cold water swirling around my fins is so soothing that I just float there for a bit before diving under the water to begin exploring. There is just enough moonlight to let me explore a few of the reefs further away from the island. On the island side of the reef, just like I expected, I see plenty of color fish, shrimp & sea weeds, but on the far side of the reef, an odd glowing blue flash catches my eye. Abandoning the reef, I swim toward where I saw that blue glow, curious to find out what it was. Maybe it was another swarm of those glowing shrimp.
I quickly found out that the glow wasn't from shrimp, but from glowing fish. An entire school of fish with glowing markings were feeding near the surface. I spent most of the following them as they fed, & watching other strange almost scary looking fish & eels dart out of the darker waters below us to feed on them. Some of those other fish had huge fangs, a few had these weird rods attached to their heads with weird glowing bubbles at the very tips. It was almost scary how wide some of those fish were able to open their mouths. A few looked like they could open their mouths wide enough to swallow my tail fin! I continued watch the other glowing fish until the sky started to grow lighter as it grew closer to dawn. As soon as the sky started to fill with the colors of dawn, the glowing fish all started to swim down toward the deep dark waters far below the surface. Awww... I felt kind of sad as I saw them swimming away. I followed them for a little bit before returning to the surface. As I poke my head above the water, I find that it is just starting to snow again.
Ah.... I guess needed that swim even more than I thought I had, I feel so much better as I swim back toward the shore as the sun just starts sneaking over the horizon. I had better get back to the cave, I didn't intend to be gone this long.
As I fly back toward the cave, I see that odd glimmer again & I fly down to investigate it closer. It looks like a field of broken machinery. How odd, I wonder how it got here. Landing in the snow, I poke around for awhile, looking at the gadgets & broken pieces of machinery. I even find some heavy cases that look to be intact, but they are almost too heavy to move. I wonder what is inside them. I'll have to come back later with the others, maybe we will be able to find something useful here. I looked around for a bit longer before returning to the cave to join them for breakfast & to tell them about the things I had found & seen.

Data log: week 1, day 6, Oooh, cattails...

Not far from that area with all the broken & scattered machinery, I saw a stream with a lot of plants poking out from the snow along it's banks. Landing next to the stream I examined the plants closely, & I was delighted to see that they looked like were either cattails or something closely related. I started digging some out, I knew the roots would make a great addition to the fish baking in the coals of the fire back at camp, especially when toasted or baked in the fire, & the leaves could be either eaten or woven into baskets for holding & carrying more supplies. After gathering as many as I could carry without dropping, I hurried back to the cave as fast as I could fly.

Data log: week 1, day 6, yikes, sudden snow!

The snow started getting heavier as I flew back to the cave & to make sure I wouldn't get lost, I started flying lower than I normally would. I guess that's it's a good thing I was flying so low to the ground, if I had been flying any higher, I would've missed seeing the ice cave, & the norn sleeping inside. I had never seen a norn that looked like that before, so odd & round looking, I had to land to get a closer look. Cautiously I slid closer across the snow as silently as I could. The norn seemed to be deeply asleep, & I was able to sneak very close to it. I was so busy looking at the odd norn, that I nearly scared myself when my mertail collided with something. Looking down I saw a journal similar to the ones I saw my friends carrying. My mertail had knocked it open, & I couldn't help but read the last line of the final entry while I was looking down at it.

... And yet, those journal pages are looking tastier and tastier.

Awww... I couldn't help but feel sorry for the strange norn. She was clearly having a harder time finding food than I was. I left some of the plants & roots I had gathered next to her & slid back out of her cave as quietly as I could to avoid disturbing her sleep. I hope she finds them tasty.
Well, definitely time to get back to the cave, breakfast & my friends are waiting. I'll check up on this new norn again later, to make sure she is doing okay.

Data log: week 1, day 6,

By the time I made it back to the cave, so much snow had piled up on the cattails I was carrying, that it looked like I was trying to carry an entire snowdrift by myself. I had to shake all the snow off the plants before I carried them into the cave, I wouldn't want the snow making a huge puddle where someone might step in it. "Sorry I was gone for so long, but I found a lot of interesting things on the way back." I put some of the cattail roots to baking next to the fire as I told them of the things I had seen while I was gone.

Data log: week 1, day 6-7.

You're not a terrible leader c1anddsaddict, you're just inexperienced. You'll figure things out eventually, & you are already a much better leader than the borg leaders. You don't try to control us like the borg would.
"Maybe Fly left the cave to search for more food, or for more firewood?" I suggest when c1anddsaddict wonders where Fly disappeared to. I point out the foot prints in the snow just outside the cave, all the older tracks were almost completely filled in with snow, only the one set of foot prints were still uncovered with snow. Clearly they were very very fresh, since we were the only ones we knew of who were in the cave, they must be Fly's since he was the only one not here at the moment.
I'm not sure whether to be disappointed or not when c1anddsaddict asks me to guard the camp. After swimming & flying around all night long, I am glad for the chance to rest, but at the same time, I'd really like to explore the other caves too. It's not places or critters that scare me, it's other unknown norns that scare me. I'd love to explore more of the cave but, c1anddsaddict is right that I would find it difficult to navigate the caves. Without legs for walking, it would be very difficult for me to move around in the deeper caves. I'll have to figure out something that will help me move around down there.
I settle down next to the fire after they leave to take care of their various tasks. As I rest & watch over the camp, I try to think on what might make good building materials & ways to get those building materials, but my mind keeps returning to that crashed space ship. I'm sure there are a lot of useful things that we could use from there, but again, c1anddsaddict is right about it possibly being dangerous. I hadn't even thought about it being radioactive, but I still feel fine, even though I had spent a while looking through the ruins. I wonder if there is a way I can adjust my cyber eye to see dangers like that. I start fiddling with my cyber eye to see if I can figure out how to adjust it like that. It never occurred to me to try something like that before. I hope I don't short it out though, it would suck to end up half blind because I broke my cyber eye.
While I am fiddling with my eye, an idea pops into my head. Maybe, just maybe there is something like a skateboard among the ruins of the ship. I could use that to help me move around in the deeper caves, I could explore them so much easier then. Right on the heels of that thought, another one occurs to me, one that makes me even more determined to revisit the ruins inspite of any possible dangers there might be. My teleporter had broken not long before I arrived on this island, maybe I could fix my teleporter with parts scavenged from the broken machines of the ship. I will go back to the remains of that ship, no matter the danger. I will just have to take all the precautions I can to make sure I get out safely & don't endanger my friends. I may need that teleporter to get my friends & I safely away from the borg if they somehow follow me or find this island.

Week 2, day 1,

Awww.... Poor Fly ran into a poisonous plant, & keeps passing out. I make a nice bed for him from what's left of the cattail leaves, so he can rest a bit easier. Now I have another reason to explore the ruins. I will try to find a medical kit so we can make Fly feel better. Don't worry c1anddsaddict, I will be very careful as I explore the ruins. I managed to activate some type of threat analysis mode on my cyber eye, hopefully it will let me see if there is any radiation before I encounter it. Searching the ruins will be one of the last things I do this morning, first things first, I'm going to bring back more food & firewood before I go exploring someplace possibly dangerous.
I make several trips to the stream to harvest more cattails & roots. If we weave the leaves together, we can have mats to either sleep on, or to line the walls of our new shelter to protect against the cold. After I've brought several loads of cattails & firewood back, I ask if I can borrow someone's knapsack. I don't have one of my own, & I can bring back more food if I have something to carry it in. I don't know what I will bring back yet, but seaweed, kelp & some type of fish are the most likely things I will be bringing back. I will bring the knapsack & food back before I search the ruins. I fly off into the night to being hunting... with or without the knapsack.

Week 2, day 2,

My usual joy at flying & exploring was rather dampened by Fly's continued illness. It's kind of hard to enjoy things when you are worried about your friend. Part of the problem with trying to find a cure for Fly is that we don't know what plant it was that made him sick. The snow has covered all of his tracks by now, so I can't follow his trail back to the plant. I fly toward the ocean as fast as I can, I need to make sure we have plenty of food supplies before I even think about searching those ruins for a medical kit.
When I reach the ocean, I just dive straight in, not even caring about how big a splash I had made as I immediately start hunting & foraging. Snatching up branches of kelp & seaweed, I start shoving them into the knapsack I borrowed. Sea grass seeds, clams, shrimp, fish, a small eel, a few sea urchins, they all find their way into the knapsack. I see a number of crabs, but I leave them alone, it would be rude to eat them when they might be Kankan's friends.
The knapsack is over half way full by the time I notice that I have worked my way close to that patch of emberplants & coral. I spare the time for a quick glance at it, & I notice that one of the plants is starting to shed some fruit.

A few berry-like fruits have popped off & rolled a bit further away from the rest of the plants. They are almost within reach, just barely within the too hot zone. I can't resist. Glancing around I find a long broken branch of normal coral & I use it to knock some of those berries into cooler water where I can reach them. Ouch, they are still just barely too hot to touch directly. I find a few more clams nearby & after eating them, I use their shells to pick up the berries, the shells provide just enough insulation to protect against the heat of those berries. Maybe they can be used to keep Fly or the rest of us warm when we are low on firewood. I think I'll call them coalberries, they look similar to glowing coals, & they certainly are hot like coals. Very carefully I store the shell covered coalberries in the knapsack.
It's not much longer before I leave the ocean & start flying back toward the cave. I left some room in the knapsack just in case I find other edibles on the way back to the cave. Flying low, I keep a very close eye out for anything that looks edible. On the way I manage to find a few patches of plants that look very similar to carrots & potatoes, & when I dig them up I do find some tasty looking roots. Tossing them into the knapsack I continue toward the cave & continue my foraging. I find a few likely looking mushrooms on some of the trees & logs & toss them into the knapsack as well. A sweet scent catches my nose & draws my attention to something higher up in one of the trees, a beehive.
My eyes grow wider as I see the honey filled hive, good thing it is winter, most of the bees are asleep. A hint of a memory passes through my mind something about how honey is suppose to help with healing. That faint half remembered thought makes me determined to bring some back for Fly. I will just have to be very careful to avoid getting stung. It takes some careful planning, but I get away with a few honeycombs & only a few stings. Those stings hurt, but the hope that the honey will help Fly makes it more than worth it.
It's only by chance that I happen to catch sight of a large bird sleeping in one of the trees.

Another thought runs through my head & sends me gliding as silently as I can toward that bird. Squawk! Snap! A less than a minute later, the now dead bird joins the other food in the knapsack, filling it completely. The full weight of the knapsack slows me down a bit, but I fly as fast as I can for the cave. Less than a half an hour later, I glide down & land in front of the cave, sliding to a stop at the edge between rock & snow.
"I know it's not exactly chicken, & that we don't have any noodles, but maybe we can make something similar to chicken noodle soup?" I grin as I pull the bird out of the knapsack.

As much as I would like to search the ruins right away for a medical kit to help Fly, I follow c1anddsaddict's advice & rest so that I won't collapse from exhaustion. As I rest, I help c1anddsaddict & Laura tend Fly, making sure he at least drinks & eats something during the times that he is awake. As we watch over Fly, I tell c1anddsaddict why I want to search the ruins of that spaceship. My primary reason now being that medical kit, my secondary reason being to hopefully find parts to fix my broken teleporter. All borg norns come with a teleporter, it's the primary way they move around. If the borg norns find me again, I want to make sure I at least have a chance to try & get everyone safely away from them before they get assimilated. My worry about the borg norns searching for me grows stronger the longer Fly is sick. If he doesn't get well soon, I may have to try searching the hivemind database to find something to help cure him, & if I search the hivemind database, the borg norns are more likely to notice me....

Week 2, day 3, to the ruins

Ackt... I overslept again, I guess I must really have needed the sleep after all that foraging & hunting I did yesterday. I'm glad to see that Fly is awake, but he is still sick. Once I am sure that there are enough supplies to last for awhile, I plan on heading to the ruins to search for something to cure Fly. I'll only stay there for a few hours, then return to check on Fly's condition & let Laura & c1anddsaddict know that I'm okay. If we are low on supplies when I get back, I'll go foraging & hunting again. Stay safe you three, I'll be back soon.

Week 2, day 3, exploring the ruins...

Just like c1anddsaddict thought, there were areas in the ruins that were dangerous, either from radiation, or bacteria. Thank you c1anddsaddict for warning me about possible dangers, if I hadn't modified my cyber eye because of what you said, I would have walked right into those dangers if you hadn't mentioned it. Carefully avoiding those dangerous spots, I work my way through the ruins looking for anything that might help Fly. Growing throughout the ruins are an odd pale blue plant. I'd noticed a few of them on other parts of the island, but this was the first time I was actually close to them when I wasn't flying. The oddest thing I noticed about them was that it seemed to get colder every time I approached the plants. I spare the plants only a few more glances then turn my full attention back to searching the ruins.
I find plenty of interesting things as I search the ruins, but not what I was looking for at the moment. It's not until it's almost time for me to head back that I finally find something that caused me to pause. Looking at it closer, a single word flowed into my brain from the hivemind database.... Holodoc.

That sounds very promising. As I grab the holodoc, I brush against one of those odd blue plants, brrrrr, wow, the plant is much colder than the air around it. As cold as ice, maybe I should call it an iceplant? Glancing around I find one of the full grown plants & carefully pull it, maybe some part of it will help reduce Fly's fever. For good measure I grab several seeds as well, then I fly back to the cave as fast as I can, holodoc, iceplant & seeds held securely in my grasp. Owww... I force myself to ignore how painfully cold my claws are getting from holding that iceplant. All I can do is hope both of these strange things help Fly.

Week 2, day 3, back at the cave.

When I reach the cave, I'm in such a rush to land that I almost slide into the snowbank that I had crashed into twice before. Scurrying inside the cave, I set the iceplant & seeds down, & try to activate the holodoc on Fly. No you stupid holodoc, not me, Fly! Show us what's wrong with Fly! Stop floating above me. It takes me several tries before I get the holodoc to focus on Fly instead of me. I hope that c1anddsaddict or Laura know how to understand what this holodoc will tell us about Fly's condition, I certainly am not familiar with such strange machines. I also hope that no one noticed that when the holodoc was floating above me it was displaying a name different from the one they are calling me by. As I wait for the holodoc to finish scanning Fly, I tear small pieces off of the ice plant & start feeding them to Fly, hoping that at least one part will start reducing his fever.
Once we've started giving Fly the treatments the holodoc suggests, maybe I should ask c1anddsaddict or Laura to come with me next time I forage in the ocean. They must be going crazy with worry & stress, that's probably why I saw c1anddsaddict outside the cave as I flew in for my landing. I know I'd be going crazy in their situation & I certainly would like the extra help during one of my foraging trips. Two people can carry more than one can & they may notice something that I missed.
