Day 1
___________

I can't believe this! I thought, shivering slightly in the changing temperature as I got closer to my destination. She was absolutely insane to send me here!

Oh, I suppose I should explain what happened, shouldn't I?

My hand somehow got this plan to send me on a trip to an island. At first I thought it was a good idea, it sounded like a chance for a relaxing vacation! Who doesn't like the beach, after all? But my jaw quickly dropped in horror when she told me that this island was covered in ice and snow. I protested quickly that hello, I am a Magma Norn! The cold weather does terrible things to my breed! However, she didn't change her mind upon knowing that, and told me my life was far too cozy and pampered, and that I should learn how to survive out in the wilderness.

Sure, if it were warmer!

I knew that even if I said no, my stubborn caretaker wouldn't take it for an answer. So here I am, about to undertake the most reckless thing I've done in my life, only wearing a scarf and two little boots.

Ahead of me, I finally see land above this vessel which is carrying me to shore. It certainly is snow, all right. I was hoping that maybe she was pulling my leg.

Well, here we go, and wish me luck.

Day 1 Continued--The Arrival!

__________________________________

I've finally reached land. Burying my fiery muzzle deep within the warm confines of my large scarf, I take my first few steps onto this foreign place. The powdery white ground makes an interesting crunch under my boots as I begin to walk. So this is what snow is, huh? At least the hand was generous enough to provide me footwear, as my feet feel fine for now.

I forgot to mention that she also provided me with a small knapsack with a journal and pen in it. I kind of wish it had something more useful inside, but what can I do? Improve my penmanship skills, I suppose.

I've been walking for a while now, still nothing. I've got to find shelter soon! Even a pine tree like that Christmas tree I saw back home would be nice! I could hide under it. I keep looking, and the chill is finally starting to get to me. I know I keep complaining, but I really hope to find something, anything, soon!

Oh, what could that be...?

Day 2--Discoveries Await at Last!

_______________________________________

Well, it turns out the thing I saw yesterday was nothing but a big rock. It wasn't particularly exciting, but it became a sort of makeshift bed for me, so I curled up with my scarf, hoping to get some sleep. It was an exhausting first day.

Today I've once again set off, getting quite hungry at that, searching for some much better shelter. I've lost track of time, so I don't know exactly if it's morning, afternoon, or even later!

After what feels like an eternity in snow, I think I just might have spotted something up ahead!

What could it be? I squint my eyes and see, far off in the distance, something other than this never changing landscape. Oh, thank the Shee! I start hurrying my pace. Suddenly, something wet tickles my nose, and I stop for a moment, startled. I feel more of this icy cold wetness attack me from above. I look at the sky and realize that it's some more of that snow falling. I grumble a little to myself, shaking off the continuously landing flakes.

I pause for a moment, gazing at the snowflakes. Even if it's extremely uncomfortable, it's somewhat pretty to look at.

But what am I doing? I need to head to where that strange thing up ahead is! I start hurrying once more towards my destination. After some time, the new landscape up ahead presents itself to me more clearly: a set of jagged cliffs. Definitely not my imagination, thank goodness!

Panting, I finally reach the area, seeing how tall the cliffs look compared to before. I decide to investigate and see if there's any shelter. I start the tedious task of climbing around the cliffs, searching.

This could take a while...so I'll tell you the events of tomorrow! Till then!

Day 2 Nightfall Recap--Shelter at Last! But...

________________________________

Argh, what a night last night. I'm writing about the events of what happened, still overwhelmed.

I spent nearly most of the evening searching for a small cave or a sizeable crevice in these set of cliffs. There was nothing to be found, nothing but ledges. I nearly fell a few times, as some of which I'd grabbed onto crumbled underneath my frozen hands.

I'd finally given up, climbing back down, and hopping back into the snow. I was beginning to wonder if the cold was getting to my head, as I'd realized there was one thing I hadn't done with this search, and that was look around the cliffs, not just above! Feeling stupid, I decided to do just that, searching around the large area. I noticed that there were rows of trees - finally! - around these cliffs. Maybe there was a chance I could find something after all.

It was dark now, however, and finding shelter with my poor night vision wasn't going to be easy.

After feeling around and continuing my search, I realized that I was on to something. The cliffs were giving away to a set of crumbled rocks. I kept going and finally I noticed there just might be, as I squinted through the darkness, an entryway. A cave? I...I think it was! At last! There it was, sitting on a large boulder, and what looked to be a large tree was growing above it. I walked a bit closer to the cave entrance, studying it.

But...was I just seeing things, or did this cave seem to have a face? I couldn't really tell, it was so dark..but my eyes had finally adjusted and--

There was a flash of white, and suddenly the cave had exploded with light! I covered my eyes with my hand, as the sudden burst was intense through this blackened night. I finally looked again and I saw that it was, indeed, a face...and the eyes and mouth of this cave(if it was honestly a cave at this point) were aglow.

What in the name of Shee was this?

Day 2 Nightfall Continued--An Unexpected Rescue Mission!

_________________________________

Continuing my journal on the events of what happened last night, I looked on, confused at the sight of the glowing face of this strange cave.

I was wondering to myself whether I should do the smart thing and not take another step towards the place. After all, caves don't normally glow...who knew what could be inside? It could be dangerous.

But somehow, I was curious. It was stupid, yes, but I'd walked this far seeing nothing for, as it turned out, a whole day, and now I'd finally gotten somewhere! I was going to take a reckless chance and see why this place was glowing. Maybe someone was inside, maybe they'd done it. I was slightly skeptical as this thought ran across my mind, but I kept it into consideration.

It was time to set out..or rather, inside.

I entered the place, and started my cave journey. There was a lot of rocks, ground and...what was that? I tripped over something, and fell to the ground. Cursing, I got back up and saw what was none other than piles of bones. Oh, great. As if this place didn't have enough ominous warnings. There probably was a wild beast in here, and I'd become its lunch.

And yet, being the frozen brained idiot I was at the moment, I pressed on, and finally saw something else...I squinted really hard and saw, after blinking a few times to be sure I wasn't hallucinating, a norn laying there. Someone had been in here after all! And quite unconscious...

Something very wrong was going on here. I felt like something ominous was creeping in the darkness...I could have sworn I might have been hearing things, too.

That was it. I had to get this norn and myself out, no questions asked. I bent over to examine the norn at a closer glance and saw that they appeared to be female, and next to her was a journal quite like mine, and a pencil. I figured these obviously belonged to her, so I put them in my knapsack for now and used all the strength I could to drag her out of this place.

The dreaded darkness felt as it if was teeming with some kind of power, or monsters or...whatever it was, I didn't like it. Maybe they'd been the ones who left the bones behind, and this norn could very well be next.

I pulled her out of the Face-Cave mouth at last, laying her carefully there, and taking out her journal and pencil, laying them beside her. I could try waking her up, perhaps. I nudged her and poked her, and tried to, but she wouldn't. Not at all. The only thing I got out of this was that she looked like a crossbreed norn. A Siamese and something else I couldn't put my finger on.

But she didn't seem dead...what was I going to do? Maybe I needed to find something. Water, perhaps. Yes, that'd be a great idea. I'd find some when the morning would show its light. There was no point looking now.

I waited till daylight, and took my leave, hoping it'd work out.

Day 3--The Following Journey

________________________________

The rest of the morning I've spent searching for a water source. I've already begun to regret this decision, because for one thing, I'll probably get myself lost and not be able to find my way back. Maybe the hand was right. My life has been too pampered and I have never been taught common sense. Or maybe she wanted to be rid of me? If she really cared, wouldn't she have at least told me what to do? But anyway, there isn't time to think about it.

The weather has gotten strange today, and I have to hurry. It's not your average snow, it's a lot wetter from yesterday, and my already cold body is shivering. My scarf's getting wetter too.

There are a lot of trees now, which is an improvement aside from this weather. I pass through them for a while as fast as I can, having a good feeling about finding some actual resources, and maybe even food! I've been so wrapped up in all of this that my hunger had begun to numb, but my stomach is complaining at long last.

My mind must be weakening, because I finally realize that I have nothing to carry the water back in. All I have is my journal and pen. But there is something else. It's not the best thing to use for a container, but, I have my boots. They're solid enough on the inside, kind of rubbery. If they were made of cloth, the water would probably just absorb and the boots would be useless.

With a sort-of plan in mind, I continue on as the watery snow rains down on me at a quickening pace.

At least, my journey hasn't been for naught, because sure enough, there is what looks like a body of water! I joyfully use up what energy I have and run towards it. It's frozen solid, but it's definitely a lake.

I stop before accidentally falling onto the ice and sliding away, and quickly begin scraping at the ice to break it open. It takes a while, and I've gotten frustrated. I even resort to jabbing my pen over and over into the ice, and finally it gives way to freezing cold liquid.

I begin drinking as much as I can, feeling refreshed, despite the icy sensation as it goes down my throat. Now to carry some back for the norn. I really hope she's still there.

I take my boots off and fill them each with water. Thankfully, the water doesn't absorb.

Taking one more drink, my mouth suddenly fills with something slimy and flailing about. What the heck??

I jump and nearly fall into the water, realizing a fish just swam into my jaws like a moron. I quickly grab onto it with my hand and pry it out of my mouth. Food! Well, that means I'll have something to give the norn for nutrition besides water, and I quickly wash it off.

I've got to remember this place, for I'll return and get a lot more of these fish. Maybe my fellow survivor can help me! If...she's alright.

I've got to get back as fast as I can.

I start my way back, but I swear I think I can hear something in the distance...it sounds an awful lot like shouting. And I can't tell if it's me finally losing my mind...but...is that..

The norn I saved?

Day 4--A new comrade!

____________________________

I started running towards the norn, knowing it really was her! She had the same Siamese/other markings. I waved at her. "Hi! You're okay!" I shouted gleefully. I just about crashed into her in the process.

Ouch!

I rubbed my sore head and got back to my feet, and in surprise, the norn was wary of me, waving her pencil towards me as a sort of weapon, with her journal serving as a shield. Oh, dear. I told her immediately that I wasn't dangerous in the least, holding my hands up defensively. To my dismay, I realized I dropped my boots full of water, but that wasn't the biggest thing on my mind anyway. I hoped she'd understand I wasn't a threat!

To my relief she understood quickly after, looking confused as to how I seemed familiar with her. I went on to explain that I'd pulled her out of that creepy Face-Cave, and she corrected me saying it was called "Fort Bearthing."

Huh, interesting name, but I'll go with that I guess.

After deciding we were comrades, she asked me some confusing questions, something about an Enemy and if...I was a fort? And the oddest thing of all, did I breathe fire?

I told her, laughing a little, that I wished I could breathe fire! That would be so useful!

She looked upset and was about to shoo me off, and I wondered if I'd be alone again after all, but then it was decided we'd work together anyway.

So here we are, building a neat shelter, and not one that glows or has a frightening aura or bones inside it. I decided to try starting a fire now that we had sticks, and after a few failed attempts, I managed to get one started.

Oh, this was so much better! My frozen magma norn skin was warming up already. I took my scarf off and let it dry nearby.

After a while of awkward silence, she decided to introduce herself. So her name is Bearthing. That makes the cave name make more sense! I listened to her story. Unlike me, some strange force had brought her here.

"My name's Panda-mist...don't ask me what it even means, I think my caretaker's a few screws loose," I laughed a little. "She decided it'd be a hilarious idea to send me on a trip to this place, even though the cold is pretty bad for me because I'm a magma norn! But I think I've been faring better than I thought I would..."

I then remembered that I still had that fish from earlier! I hadn't given it to Bearthing, and I pulled it out of my knapsack and offered it to her. "I haven't eaten, but I was going to give this to you. I suppose I'm a bit foolish for still having an empty stomach, though."

Maybe we could share it, if she's already eaten.

The night's begun to fall, and finally I'm not sleeping alone on rocks.

Day 5 - Lots of Thinking and Learning

_________________________________________

I've been learning a lot about my new comrade Bearthing. For one thing, she has her very own warrior-like title, 'the Undesireable,' and she's quite tougher than I am. I could figure this out when I ran into her, she was cautious of me, because for all she knew, I could be some creature who liked norn flesh.

But I'm not a cannibal at all, so that's no concern!

Bearthing rejected my fish offer, she had already eaten, after all. I decide I probably should eat by now, so I roast it over the fire and dig into the tasty meat. My stomach is feeling better already!

Then she's been telling me how Hands are just considered annoying and merely food in her village. I am beginning to think differently about my caretaker. Why do I have to listen to her, anyway? Was she ever particularly nice to me?

I don't know. But Bearthing has a point. I'd seen some norns back home say things like 'Eat Hand' and I always wondered what they meant by that. How can you eat a Hand, after all?

Maybe they didn't like her. As for me, I was always sort of indifferent to her. I was grateful she took care of me...but...maybe she isn't so great. I remember once as a baby norn she threatened to shoot me out the airlock of the ship if I didn't eat my lemons.

Yeah, definitely more than a bit insane.

Maybe I should reconsider returning home. I'd just be confined to a life of a crazy caretaker, always telling me what to do. Suddenly Bearthing's way of life and her home sounds much more appealing than mine does. I've never even known there were norns who lived without Hands.

I'm so lost in thought. Bearthing is still talking about her village and finding some parts funny, laughing about it. I snap back to attention, feeling rather embarrassed. She tells me that I should hit my Hand more often. I'm not sure if that'd do any good, my caretaker would probably either airlock me or throw me in the piranha pit.

Maybe I shouldn't go back home, after all.

After a while, Bearthing suggests we go out tomorrow and explore and do all kinds of things. I'm worried that maybe I'll only slow her down, after all, I'd been the one to find a rock good enough to use as a bed, and stupid enough to walk into a glowing cave--although I'd found her, so maybe that was a smart move.

She reassures we'd still come back home by the end of the day, and I feel better knowing I can be of help. It's much nicer not having to survive alone out here.

She comments that I have a journal like she, which I find curious as well. I wonder why we were both given them?

Lastly, I figure one more thing is necessary to tell Bearthing:

"Oh, you don't have to call me Panda-mist. Just Panda will be fine, even though I don't look anything like that black and white creature. It's easier to say, however!"

We settle off to sleep, for tomorrow will be an interesting day!

Day 6 - Pillaging? I guess so!

_______________________________

...I think, anyway. Today Bearthing and I have begun to go exploring. She taught me how to use a spear, or rather, a sharpened stick, which is something I've never done before! It wasn't nearly as hard as it looked at first!

I feel like I've been getting tougher by each day!

Bearthing marked a symbol in the snow in front of our shelter and I thought it looked rather silly, sort of like a frowny face. She seemed rather confused by that, but maybe the cold's just making me goofy right now.

We talked for a while while walking, and apparently it's possible to ransack nothing. Well, you learn something new every day! I think meeting Bearthing has opened up my mind to a lot of new perspective.

Unfortunately, today's been rather unlucky in places. Of course, out of all the days, the sky just had to dump all the snow it could ever muster on us. It'd been freezing, but even though my Magma norn instinct kept wanting me to yell out the most basic of norn speech, 'Me intensely cold!', I kept my mouth shut and carried on. Bearthing decided to help me though; she wrapped me up extra tightly in my scarf. I guess this thing is stretchier than I thought at first! It would have been nice if I'd figured this out sooner. I'm going to write a bit more later.

-----

Argh!

Right now we're stuck in a hole. Before that, we came across the strangest tree! I think they were lamps? I don't really know. But we decided to see what they tasted like, and they certainly were interesting in flavor. Beforehand I wasn't sure if we could trust these fruit. But we hadn't packed any food and it was ripe for the taking!

Of course, this led us to our downfall, quite literally! The ground began to sink and we fell straight into the hole we're in now.

After our frustration was expressed, I decide we should take a look anyway. "There could be some mushrooms in this place! I've had them before, they're really good," I tell her.

I get up and start walking forth. The cave's not as nearly as cold outside, which is nice. It's just a bit damp in places. There are pieces of sharp ice hanging off the ceiling in places. They look rather deadly...

"I think we'd better watch out for those," I gulp nervously. "If they fall, they might hurt us."

But besides those ice shards, I can see a lot of crystals growing here and there, making the cave aglow, and not in a frightening way.

Well, on to those mushrooms! Or maybe, something better!

Day 7 - The Tunnel Goes Onward

__________________________________

"Mushrooms!" I exclaimed, beaming. We'd found them after some journeying! They were grey in color and looked quite nice. Bearthing and I sat down and ate some, they tasted almost like the ones back home. I decided to pack some extra ones in my knapsack because food was scarce in a lot of places.

After we were full, we slept for a while.

The tunnel exploration has kept going all night and into today, which I think is day 7. I wrote it down just to be sure.

Not a lot has happened, but after what felt like ages walking and seeing what else there was, we came across a toy down here, of all things! It looked much like one of the musical boxes back home. I knew a norn who was quite addicted to it. The music that he kept playing was obnoxious after several repetitive times!

Bearthing didn't know what it was, so she assumed we'd found someone else. But to her frustration, the box kept playing nothing but music, and not answering her properly. I giggled some. I'd never seen a creature who didn't know what a music box was! I revealed the mystery behind this "creature" and she understood, hoping it wouldn't make her weak.

"No, you don't have to worry! It's just nice to hear when there's nothing but deafening silence sometimes." I grinned, reassuring her.

The music box played its comforting tunes, and we fell asleep for a while.

When I woke back up, Bearthing wasn't there. I jumped up with a start. "Bearthing?" I called out. She must have gotten curious about something and went to go see. I got up and dusted myself off, taking out a mushroom and eating it, and began walking forward, hoping that I would find her.

Otherwise, I'd probably get worried...

Day 8 - Treasure!

________________________

I continued down the tunnel, searching for Bearthing. Finally after a lot of nothing, the narrow passage opened up to a cavern, and inside was...a lot of circular pieces that shone a gold color. My brain clicked into recognition at the sight. Gold!

I'd heard about this currency. Despite my Hand being a lunatic, she would tell us about things, such as the Shee's gold. They could trade it in for items like food!

Sounds good to me!

"Wow, who left all this gold out here?" I pondered aloud, stepping inside. Bearthing was absolutely ecstatic, rolling around and swimming in the gold like it were the most precious form of water. She didn't seem to care where it came from, and exclaimed it was all hers, and some for me, too.

I shrugged, not really knowing what I'd do with it all. Well actually...maybe I could use it to somehow escape my home if I ever made it back. I'd spent some time pondering about it, and I'd come to the conclusion that I think I'd like to live without a Hand. Preferably not in the cold, of course. Not like this.

I noticed there were even mountains of golden food here among all the gold and gold accessories. It really seemed like a paradise! Picking up an apple, I cautiously sniffed it, then took a bite.

It's delicious! It tastes so ripe, too!

"This is really good, Bearthing!" I told her. "I'm not getting any freaky side effects, so I think we're good!"

Bearthing said that the food won't last forever, and I agreed. I still wonder who dropped all this treasure out here though, in the middle of the Arctic. It seemed a bit suspicious. I tried to remain optimistic, however.

Bearthing tried in vain to scoop up all the treasure she could. "Here!" I said, opening up my knapsack where my journal, pen, and the mushrooms still lay. "We can fit some of the smaller stuff inside." I packed the food mostly into it and a few coins, because we didn't need to starve again.

Another suspicious thing, though, is that the treasure is covered in a layer of frost, even though it's fairly temperate in here.

"Yeah, why is it warm..?" I asked quietly. Something wasn't right. The other tunnels were much damper and a bit colder than this...

Are we in a trap?

I tried to remain brave and hope maybe it was just me, and that this cavern was just warm due to something harmless. I held my sharp stick tightly in my hand, even still.

I hope we can make it out of here.

Day 9 - It was a trap after all...bah!

__________________________________

Sure enough, it's a trap. My instinct had been right, there was no way the cavern could have been warm due to natural reasons.

Right as Bearthing and I began walking towards the exit, a thunderous noise sounded; the gold treasure scattered and went flying in all directions, and a monstrous pale, aqua-colored head rose high into the air. "M-monster!" I cried out, waving my stick forward. The creature was very large, its head sort of resembled a statue of a Shee's head I'd once seen, and its body was covered in scales.

Bearthing calls it a Shee-Dragon. Seems like a fitting name!

It was clearly angered at the fact we were taking some of its loot, and as Bearthing tried to attack it with her spear, its tail thumped down at her.

"Bearthing!!" I screamed. No no no...it can't be over..it just can't..! My mind raced. But thankfully she was still alive, it had merely trapped her. I raced forward towards the dragon.

"Leave us alone! I know we took your treasure, but we've been out in the middle of the cold and we're just trying to survive!" I yelled at it.

The Shee-Dragon didn't attack or trap me, for some reason. It began to talk, and explained to me that I was one of its kind.

"What? But we look nothing alike!" I responded, bewildered.

It went on to explain that we were both beings of fire. Heh, I didn't breathe fire, however.

Next thing I knew, the Shee-Dragon was telling me how to get out. There was no way I'd abandon Bearthing though. She's more than just a comrade. She is a friend.

I would definitely find help, and get her out of here. She had quickly taken a map while the dragon wasn't looking, and rolled it over. I grabbed it quickly; she had written directions on it. I put it in my knapsack and left, looking back worried for a brief moment, and left the cavern.

I can only hope it doesn't decide to eat her before I get back. I begin running down the tunnel as fast as I can, and I bump into another creature!

It's a Grendel!

Day 10 and 11 - A Grendel and Possible Plan

__________________________

I fell over after bumping into the..the Grendel. My norn instinct kicked back into gear and I grew frightened, trembling, and got up as fast as I could.

First a Shee-Dragon, and now this! Will I be able to return to Bearthing?

But the Grendel didn't growl at me or try to hit me. He looked as confused as I, then began talking to me in a normal voice, saying that his name is Mahk Mako, and that he was trapped in this tunnel along with us.

"Are you in the same situation as us? Trying to survive the Arctic like we are?" I asked, still wary of him.

"No, I am simply a reporter. I followed you two down here, and got trapped too," he replied, picking up his notebook and writing utensil.

"What..? A reporter?" I questioned, completely lost.

So...it turns out that Mahk Mako knew all about this whole thing, about us being thrown into the Arctic to survive. There were even other creatures on the same land, going through the exact same thing.

I felt my anger rising. "Whose idea was this?! Did they think it was some kind of a joke? To throw us out here, playing Shee, while some out there could be starving while we speak?"

"The whole thing isn't that bad, honestly," Mahk Mako said. "The losers aren't left out here to die, they are sent back on a vessel to their home. It's like a game, you see."

I thought all of this seemed odd...so whoever's idea this was, they must have contacted my caretaker, as well.

Mahk Mako was merely a reporter. I had gotten angry, but I realized attacking the messenger would do no good. He's also a Grendel, and if I made him angry, well...I didn't want to know what would happen.

I decided to get to the point of what was going on right now.

"Did you see that dragon?" I asked him. He replied that he had, and run away from it, himself, and that's when I smacked into him while trying to get help.

"My friend is stuck back there, the Shee-Dragon trapped her! I don't know how I'm going to even get help...that creature is huge." I voiced my frustrations.

"You could just leave her behind and survive on your own," Mahk Mako suggested.

"No, I'm not doing that! After all she's done for me...I will not. And...I don't care if this is a game or not, I don't even care about winning. I will get her out. I...just don't know how."

I really didn't know what I was going to do.

The Grendel reporter asked me how I managed to get out. I explained about the dragon considering me one of its own, and showed him the map, as well. While doing this, I realized maybe there was a way I could turn back, and convince the dragon to let my friend go.

"I've got it." I said at last. "It's a very simple plan, but I don't know what else would work. And if that weren't to work, I'll just let the dragon keep all the treasure. This is going to take a while, though."

I told Mahk Mako to stay behind, which he wanted to anyway. I went running past him, up the tunnel.

After once again what felt like forever, and losing track of time, I found it. The music box. Now to take the long journey back.

After what was probably hours, I returned. It would probably be useless to the dragon, but maybe I could negotiate with it. Mahk Mako looked confused at the music box, but I was determined.

I ran into the cavern. "I'm back!" I announced.

Bearthing turned to look at me with an expression of confusion and what I think was...relief. "With a Box of Boom?"

"Yes!" I replied, relieved that she was still alive. The Shee-Dragon turned to me, puzzled. "And what do you plan to do with that?"

"Listen. I don't want to have to fight you. And honestly, there's no way anyone could, I think. But please let my friend go. She's tough, but not bad. I'll even give you this music box as an offering. It's not made of gold, but it plays wonderful music."

I hoped that the Shee-Dragon would understand. Or at least, let her go regardless.

Day 13 and 14 - Time to leave this place!
________________________________________

Hooray! The Shee-Dragon let us go!

Of course, to my foolishness, the dragon did have a bunch of music boxes already, but although they were made of gold, this particular music box was special to it, and appeared to have been lost a long time ago. The dragon must have been here a while, by the sounds of it.

But anyway, what matters is that we're free! Now we can get out of here!

After sleeping a while, I woke up and remembered that there was one more creature who needed to get out of here, too, and that was Mahk Mako. I felt badly about that and wondered if he had followed us yet. Oh, and then there was explaining to Bearthing that he was a harmless grendel. She was already relying on me, for some reason, to get us out of here! I felt a bit embarrassed when she asked me what to do next. But earlier, I was so tired from all the journeying and planning to rescue her that I just could not think straight, and slept for a good while, which brings us to now. I figured, first off, I'd better tell her the full situation.

She was already awake. "Oh!" I uttered, surprised. "You're up. Okay, well, I guess a plan would be good, yes," I rambled, rubbing my eyes. "Right. First off, I need to tell you that there's a grendel in the tunnel with us somewhere."

Already, I could see Bearthing getting tense and angry looking from it, but I put up my paw. "Yes, that's what I thought too, I ran right into him after looking for help, but he actually spoke nicely to me, err, politely anyway, and said he's just a reporter and followed us down here."

Bearthing's eyebrows still looked furrowed. "Is he a spy of the Enemy?"

"I...uh, let me just explain. This whole thing he knows about, as for the 'Enemy', I actually don't think I know who it is. But the grendel, whose name is Mahk Mako, told me that we were put out here in this snowy land to survive, and there are others out there doing the same. And uh..the losers get sent home on a vessel or something instead of dying in the cold. So..apparently someone is playing a game with us, which made me angry too, when I found out."

Bearthing expressed her anger at the whole situation, telling me what she'd learned from the Shee-Dragon.

"Magic? A Shee-like being?" I asked, wondering. "I...I guess that'd make sense. But anyway, we should get out of here, and also, we should let Mahk Mako follow us out because he's stuck too. He's not going to eat us, I swear."

Finally he caught up with us, and Bearthing grumbled some while the journey continued on.

"I forgot to mention that I live on this land," Mahk Mako told us some time later. "I wasn't dropped off here, some magically, like you all were."

"Oh! I guess that's obvious," I said quietly. I felt really awkward about being the leader right now. Bearthing was much more of a survivor than I. But I suppose I was improving!

"We'll definitely get out of here though," I said, hoping to lift everyone's spirits.

Once more, it felt like hours. We did take some time to rest, which was good, because ow, does walking forever kill your limbs! I kept looking at the map, and finally getting a better picture of getting out of here. The tunnel wasn't straight, unfortunately, otherwise no one would be lost. The crystals and icicles from before were coming into sight. Oddly enough, I recognized some of them from when we first came down here.

Finally, there it was! The hole that we fell into! "At last!" I shouted with glee. "We can get out!" The three of us helped each other out of the tunnel.

Mahk Mako bid his farewell and wandered back out into the Arctic wilderness, and now it was Bearthing and I once more. I wondered if we'd ever find out who was behind this, and of course she wondered as well.

Till next time, journal.

Day 15 - Back to Shelter

_________________________________

I'm writing a short entry for now. There hasn't been anything eventful thus far besides taking the long journey back to our shelter, which I hope is still there! At least the weather hasn't been too bad. No extreme blizzards so far!

Bearthing seems pretty exhausted and tired for now, and I hope she'll be okay. Maybe the cold is finally getting to her, too.

I wanted to give her my scarf out of hospitality, but she rejected the offer, saying I definitely needed it more. I still felt concern, though.

Well, here's the shelter at last. Going to rest now, and write later when something happens.

Till next time!

Day 16 - Bears?

___________________________

Bearthing has woken me up with an idea today. Something about catching a white bear cub and using it against the Enemy.

It seems I'm starting to call whoever's behind this whole thing the enemy, too! Bearthing's rubbing off on me somewhat.

I'm not sure if this is a good idea though...what if the parents were to find out? We really could get killed.

I guess it could make a good guard, though. Maybe there's a cub wandering around in the snow alone, with no mother to take care of it. We could be its parents!

I think I'm starting to lose it.

I nodded to Bearthing. "It sounds pretty dangerous, and there's an extremely high risk of the mother finding out and going after us, but maybe there's a cub somewhere all alone, and we could look after it!"

I started preparing for this extremely insane task, wrapping my scarf up tightly, making sure the knapsack is filled with food, and taking my spear in paw.

"Okay, ready when you are, I guess." I said, feeling daring and nervous at the same time.

Day 19 - This is dandy.

_____________________________________

Well, we went on the journey to capture a bear cub, and it hasn't gone too well so far. I'm currently writing this up in a tree, and below us is an extremely outraged mother bear!

So much for finding an orphan bear cub, blah.

Things had gone pretty well so far, but I think Bearthing might have gotten a bit carried away, and decided to capture a cub who already had a mother. But I don't want to place blame on her, I think the cold's making us both want to do crazy things anyhow, and I agreed with it, so it's just as much as my fault. We got ourselves in this mess, so now we have to...gulp, somehow get out.

Our food just fell down below...great. The mother bear started going through it...thankfully my knapsack is still fine, it almost fell down too but Bearthing held onto it while the food spilled out all over the place below.

I don't know how we're going to give back the baby without getting ripped to shreds anyway!

"Okay," I said, trying not to stress at the situation. "Well, for one thing, there's no negotiating with this one, she's not as intelligent as the Shee-Dragon. We're just going to have to somehow quickly scoot down there and drop the cub off and maybe she'll leave us alone, haha!" I felt rather cracked with pressure at this point.

Bearthing noticed that the mother seemed really preoccupied with eating all the food.

"Yeah, that's it! We'll quickly get the cub down there now while we still can!" I told her.

Bearthing still didn't want to release the cub.

"Please, Bearthing.." I begged her. "There's no way we can win this. I don't want us to die by this circumstance, of all things! I was hoping, myself, that we could get out with an orphan cub, but this is clearly no parent-less bear!"

The norn warrior begrudgingly decided to go along with it. We carefully lowered the net, holding onto each other so we could reach the ground. The net was opened and the bear cub tumbled out into the snow. "Okay, gahh, let's get back up there before she sees us!" I hissed, and we scooted back up the tree top.

The mother rushed to her cub and licked it all over, seeming relieved that it was unharmed. But she still gazed up at us with contempt.

"Well, we're definitely not out free yet..." I muttered. "How are we going to get out of here?"

"Bah! If we'd just stayed with the baby, maybe she would have surrendered and this would be our victory," Bearthing replied with an annoyed tone.

"I know. It would have been nice to win...but I don't want to lose a friend to a fearsome predator like this. You are tough, but I know for a fact that creature is ten times our size and she would tear us up without a second thought. We're on her very worst side."

Bearthing still seemed irritated, but I thought I saw something in her eyes that might have looked...warm, just for a moment.

So we decided to wait. And wait. And wait some more...

It was pitch black out. It seemed finally the mother was getting impatient, and she turned to leave with her cub. All the food that fell below was completely devoured.

We waited till she was completely gone, and finally began to climb back down the tree.

"It's okay," I tried to reassure Bearthing. "I think you're already a tough warrior on your own! You don't need a baby bear to defeat an enemy! I mean, your name is Bearthing the Undesirable! If you weren't strong, I'm sure you wouldn't have been given such a name!" I patted her on the shoulder, hoping she would feel encouraged.

"We're going to be okay! We'll win, and we don't need a bear to do it!" I raised my spear to the air.

Day 20 - A Night of Pondering and Emotion-expressing

________________________________

After the disastrous and chaotic events of yesterday, Bearthing and I rested up in our shelter today after gathering more fish to eat, which seemed to have replenished. We'd been discussing the enemy, or...whoever was behind this, anyway, and where they might lurk. This led to Bearthing wondering if there had been any unusual structures we'd seen, despite the creepy Face-Cave and similar things.

"Well, those are all I can really think of," I said quietly, playing with a fish bone. "I mean where did those ghosts come from, anyhow? That was really creepy...and they were strong enough to knock you out cold."

I wish I knew. Everything else is pretty ordinary, just snow, mountains and rocks.

"I still think there was something pretty odd about all we did see. They must be big hints towards whoever's behind this whole...game," I rambled on.

My thoughts wandered back to why my Hand had agreed with it. I decided to voice this aloud, too, as it had been bothering me for a while.

"I still don't get it. Why did the Hand decide to send me here?" I asked. "Maybe she really wanted to be rid of me. I mean...a loving caretaker would never throw their norns out like that. She's always been strange. When I was a baby norn, she'd even threaten me sometimes if I didn't eat my food. Maybe she hates me. I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't go back..."

I've finally said it aloud. It feels rather good expressing my worries to a friend.

"I wonder what I'm going to do..." I put a paw to my face. "I can't go back, if she really just wanted to be rid of me. I really don't think I even want to return now. You helped me realize that, Bearthing. I just...I went with whatever she said all along. I was so stupid..."

Wow, I sure went off into a lot of emotions here. Maybe it's because I can trust Bearthing, and can tell her these things.

I wonder what she'll think of all this. Maybe she'll just think I'm being pathetic. Maybe I am.

I'm just glad to say all that.

Day 21
_______________________________

Okay, so this is pretty urgent. This morning I went out to gather some more sticks for firewood, and I heard a rumbling noise. Like, a loud rumbling noise. Whatever it is, I'm going to rush home now.

W-what's that..?

Day...22?

__________________________

So cold...

The last thing I remember...is that a sudden rush of snow buried me. I should have run away as soon as I heard that rumbling sound...

I've been stuck in this snow for a while, my body is just so cold right now. Perhaps my Magma skin is finally succumbing to everything.

Bearthing...where could she be? I'm scared. I hope she didn't get hit by the avalanche, too...at least she won't freeze as much as I will.

I must find my way out of this. There's just so much snow...and it's so...so cold...

I can hardly move. Is this it..? Is this the end?

I began to move just a little, but my legs feel like they're locked in place. The cold is just too much.

Just wait for me...

Day 23 - I'm out...?

____________________________

I can't believe it. Someone got me out of this avalanche! I don't know who, though.

I'm currently laying here next to a campfire. It's not near the shelter that Bearthing and I built, so it couldn't have been her who saved me...could it? I'm still shivering a whole lot, huddled up next to the embers. They're so warm...just what I needed. If I'd been out in the snow any longer, no doubt I'd be a goner...

Well, whoever helped me might show up soon. And when they do, I'll definitely thank them.

There's still a terrible feeling in my head though as I begin to fall asleep, just hardly able to write this. Where is Bearthing? Is she safe? Will I ever see her again...?

Day 23 Continued

__________________________

I've woken up again, feeling more rested. My body feels a lot warmer now, so I think I can get up. It must be later on in the day.

There's still no one there, though...

I got up and stretched, then realized something is missing. Looking down, I noticed my boots are gone. Shoot! I guess the avalanche swept them away. Is my scarf here still?

....Nope. Gone too.

My knapsack is still here, though, otherwise, how else would I be writing in this journal?

Now if I could try locating my rescuer...they can't be far from here. I began walking a short distance from the campfire, but not too far. I don't need to get lost after all this.

I hope to find someone.

Day 23 Continued again

_____________________________

It's been a while looking for my rescuer, but I've spotted no one so far. I guess since I'm limiting myself to how far I'll go is why.

I decided to head back, and take a slightly different direction.

I just saw something blue in the snow.

Going over to it, I pulled the thing out, and hey, it's my scarf! I'm glad that hasn't been lost. It's very cold though, so I'm going to have to warm it near the fire, if that's still going.

I walked further and saw something else, yet again. Something brown...yep, there's my boots. I plucked them out and dumped the snow out. I guess this is why there's a huge layer of snow here. This is where the avalanche hit.

Bearthing...

Did she get hit by it, too? What if no one rescued her? I wish it'd been her I'd found in the snow instead of my winter wear.

Anyway, I'm trying not to think about it too hard, but...it's been about a day or two now since I've seen her last. The last time we talked was when I blurted out everything about how much I didn't want to go home. She'd been understanding and knew the Hand wasn't to be trusted, that I should go home with her. I wonder if she really would want me there with her tribe. They're all probably Hardman norns or mixtures of them. I didn't know what a Hardman norn was until Bearthing had told me. Before then, I assumed she was a strange Siamese crossbreed.

I'm not rough and tough like they are. But...first I have to see if I'll ever even see her again. For all I know, she could be frozen right now, and...

A few tears welled up in my eyes thinking about it, writing about it. I guess I've gotten really used to her presence these past few weeks. She always helped me out even if she had a short fuse. She could have decided to leave me back there when we met, because I didn't breathe fire, but she decided to team up with me anyway.

She changed me for the better.

Well, whether I see her again or not...I'll always be grateful for Bearthing.

I entered the campsite again, and noticed the food laid out for me by the kind stranger.

Well, maybe something will happen tomorrow. Who knows.

Day 24 - The rescuer!

___________________________

I woke up to the sound of crunching snow. My eyes opened and I saw before me what appeared to be a very unusual and colorful creature...

Wow, I've never seen a norn like this before! Their body...hers, possibly, looks like a scorpion of sorts, with wings even, and her face looks all metallic on one side. A borg? I'd heard about them once. But not one like this!

"Hi there," I greeted, getting up slowly. She looked really nervous and backed away shyly. "N-no, it's okay, really! I'm Panda-mist, or...Panda for short. Panda the Magma." I said that last name with a deep sadness filling me.

"Are you my rescuer? If you are, thank you so very much."

Day 24 Cont.

________________________

It turns out that yes, this norn was my rescuer! She's really shy it seems. I don't mean to make her nervous.

"Thank you again! I really almost died out there," I told her. "I think I lost my friend out there..." My worries got a hold of me again as I thought about that norn warrior.

"Hey, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to go look to see if my shelter and friend survived the avalanche," I said to the new norn. "I'll be right back, though. I remember it hit not far from where we stayed, so I hope I can find something!"

I waved at her, then quickly ran off to locate where our shelter is, or was.

I reached the place where the snow was a higher level, and could see that some trees had been damaged...and sure enough, there it was. Our shelter. Torn into shreds.

My throat choked up; Bearthing was nowhere to be seen. I panicked and started digging in the snow for her, looking everywhere for a sign of life, for some brown fur.

I saw a long stick stuck in a huge pile of snow and pulled it out. It's her spear, I'm sure of it! I began digging into the snow near her weapon, but...still, nothing.

Nothing at all!

Our shelter, destroyed. And no Bearthing.

Tears finally found their way down my cheeks. I'd searched all over. Nothing at all. Where had she gone? Did...the avalanche...take her away?

I covered my face with my paws, crying. I have to head back, this is just too much.

I walked back the rest of the way, feeling awful, and approached the rescuer norn. "My shelter didn't make it," I said quietly. "And my friend is nowhere to be seen."

I sat down, trying to rationalize my thoughts. Maybe she did make it out, somehow, and wandered far away. Bearthing wouldn't die that easily, would she? She's a Hardman norn crossbreed, she can take a fall and tumble.

I wiped my eyes, holding onto just a glimmer of hope. Maybe since this whole thing is a game, she'll get sent home safely to her clan, as Mahk Mako had told me. Maybe she is safe.

I'll still miss her, though.

I looked up at the rescuer. "I'm sorry, it's just that my friend was there for me through some hard times, and I can only wish I could have found her. But...still, thank you for what you've done." I tried to change the subject to something slightly more cheerful, even though this was still so difficult.

At least the other survivors seem fine, well, this one, anyway. That's good.

Day 25 - Afterwards

__________________________

I was comforted yesterday by the kind norn who saved me. It felt nice knowing I wasn't all alone. I'd fallen asleep after all of that, and now it's the next day.

She's run off somewhere, and I'm alone at the fire, warming up. I'm not sure where to go from here, journeying far away might be a foolish thing to do at the moment. I should stick close by to where this norn and the other possible unseen survivors may be.

I still wonder about Bearthing. It's hard not to, she was my first friend out here, after all. But I remind myself that this is a game, and that I'm sure she'll be rescued.

I got up and began walking not too far from the camp. It's really empty around here. Maybe that scorpion borg norn, who I still haven't gotten the name of, is out here all by herself. Or maybe she's just gone off looking for supplies.

At the end of all this, will I get sent back to my Hand? If I don't find Bearthing again, I guess I won't be able to go home with her. I suppose maybe there could be some way out of that place, though. Maybe I'd just never looked hard enough.

Then I could live without a Hand, just like her.

Whatever happens will happen.
