Greetings and well met, friend. My name is Mip and I have travelled to the island from the distant stars to explore this strange new land, meet friends and rivals, and discover who I truly am. I can only hope I survive long enough to do so! I thank you in advance, friend, for any support you wish to show me.

… Is this on? Oh, thank goodness, it works in the rain!

I can't believe my luck but this gadget I found appears to be some sort of audio journal. Taking the time to talk over what has happened so far might help me to make sense of everything and... perhaps remember that which is lost to me.

Let's start at the beginning; my name is Mip and I have no idea why I've woken up on the shore of a hot, rainy island.

… Actually, that's not quite right. I can guess a few things though I can't say anything with certainty. I woke up about half an hour ago in an escape pod from my homeship, Ark. The pod had crashed on the sandy shore of this unknown island. My body is sore but my head feels far worse - I think I must have had a rough entry through the atmosphere.

The escape pod was a write-off and when I checked it over for anything that might help me, all I found was a flier for some kind of game called “Survivor” and this gadget.

I... I don't know why I'm here. My last memory before waking up in the pod was discussing what book to view for bedtime with Ark. I can only imagine this “Survivor” game has something to do with it. I hope so - it is my only lead.

Can you believe the rain is getting heavier? I've never seen rain like this before - it was always so fine, so ordered back home. Here, the wind whips the large drops across the shore and each gust hits like a wall of water! I'm taking shelter under the pod wreckage on the beach right now but the waves feel like they're coming closer and it is barely keeping the rain off me... I don't want to but I may have to abandon it to seek shelter away from the shore. I could be in danger here.

I'm going to think a little longer and then get going. I might not find answers in the forest but hopefully I will find a better shelter and a place to stay the night.

Goodbye for now, journal.

… How do I turn this thing o--

Hello again, journal.

I wasn't sure whether I should update again today - I don't know how many entries this device can hold, after all - but I feel... I don't know, I guess unsettled is the right word.

I've relocated from the beach into the forest. It is still raining, and heavily at that, but the canopy keeps the worst of it out and the wind isn't nearly as bad when it has to get past the trees to get to me! Still...

Despite all the noise of the storm, I've yet to hear a single voice or see signs of another norn. Occasionally I hear rustles from the bushes as I travel but it is never more than a small creature running for cover. It feels a little lonely and it also makes me feel a little paranoid, all alone in this great big forest with so many hiding places for terrible things to jump out at me and, and, and..!

It's scary to think about the possibilities. So I'm talking to you, journal. And to myself, I guess. It's silly but it is making me feel a little better and I can't think that anyone will know, so it's okay!

I'm currently sat on a tree root, resting my poor tired legs. It feels like I've walked the length of my homeship twice over! I've gathered some nuts to eat while I take a break. You will have to forgive me, journal, because I used you to break them open. You don't look damaged or scratched though so I think no harm's been done?

Huh?

...

... That's so strange. I thought I caught the scent of something sweet and sugary on the wind. I-is my mind playing tricks on me..?

...

I should get back to looking for a good place to spend the night.

Goodbye for now, journal.

Hello again, journal... if that's what you are, even.

I woke up this morning in a strange place that I'd never seen before. I had been sleeping on a bed made from long, sturdy branches and large palm leaves. It had been made between two trees and was raised above the ground, presumably so that any hungry creatures couldn't reach it. A "roof" made of palm leaves and vines was tied above the bed to keep it dry and a couple of crude tools had been tied up on nearby branches. There was even food and water carefully gathered and stored and dry wood and kindling for a fire!

I was scared. Really, really scared. I was thinking that I must have hit my head very badly when I arrived at this island, that I was injured and needed help. You, journal, just helped to make me feel worse, for you showed me that two days had gone by from the last point that I remember. Two whole days! When I looked at the sky and saw the thick, heavy clouds blocking out the sun, I felt like I was looking into my own mind.

But then I saw it.

I never realised this before, journal, but did you know you can view and listen to your log history?

I'm not sure I understand what's been recorded but I feel frightened and I feel angry. It was my voice that spoke but there was no way those were my words.

... What is <convenant>? And what is its objective?

It must be related to "Survivor" somehow! The flier I have lists the other norns that I am sharing this strange island with and I intend to seek them out. Even if they don't have answers, they might be able to help me.

But first... breakfast. And calming down. I won't find out anything on an empty stomach. Hmm, I wonder if this island has any coffee plants or tea trees..?

Goodbye for now, journal. And... sorry for yelling at you. It's hard to stay mad at the only thing I can talk to.

... Bye!

Hello again, journal!

Though I'm not sure as to what purpose you serve, I have decided to continue recording my time here with you. If I have any further problems with loss of consciousness or memory, you can help to fill me in.

It's been a very busy day and even without memory problems, I think I'd still have to record it to keep tabs on everything... so here goes nothing! Do forgive me if I yawn because it's hard to keep my eyes open.

I ate my breakfast of mixed fruit and nuts this morning and then decided to look for the other Survivors on the island. I figured that if I came across anything edible in my meandering, I could gather it up and bring it home to the shelter. This led on to me making a make-shift bindle out of a stick, a palm leaf and a vine since I was sure I would find something to bring back and balancing carrying my journal and food seemed like a bad idea. It took me longer than I would admit to to make but it was well worth the effort!

It was mid-morning by the time I set off and the island was really starting to heat up. I was thankful the sun was still hiding behind the clouds but it was still ever so muggy so I made sure to rest often lest I faint. This little policy actually really helped me to notice the plants and creatures I was surrounded with and I found some delicious-looking portobello mushrooms under some ferns on my first rest! I'm looking forward to snacking on them tomorrow.

The first Survivor I managed to find was Layla. It seems that I had met her before during the period I don't remember but thankfully it turns out that I helped to look after her rather than menace her and she was really very grateful. We ended up discussing my memory problems and she showed me a lot of concern and kindness - she truly is a very nice norn! She helped to show me around and tell me about her experiences on the island so far. I shared some of my mushrooms with her and left, saying I would visit her again soon. I'm so glad there is someone real I can talk to. Hopefully we can become good friends.

I wandered along a route Layla had told me about and soon reached a pond. She had told me that some of the others she had met were drinking from there. I took a few sips myself - wandering around when it's this humid is very thirsty work! - but I couldn't help but wonder how fresh the water really was and didn't drink much.

When I was just picking up my things to move on, I saw a gleam of red through the undergrowth. A creature with red eyes, perhaps and ettin or a grendel, had been watching me! It felt a bit ominous. There are a couple of ettins and grendels both on this island and I had felt rather aprehensive about meeting any of them. The reputation of both races, as thieves and brutes, had made me worry that they would cause me some harm.

I needn't have worried at all though. Whatever creature had seen me seemed to watch me with curiosity but kept a good distance between us and soon lost interest in me entirely!

The forest was vast and it was well into the afternoon when I found something I had been hoping for - a small river. The water there was flowing and fresh, something I just couldn't have been certain about with the pond. I could drink there to my hearts content and even bathe, since there was no risk I would be contaminating the water. Washing my face and hands felt wonderfully refreshing!

I decided to make a circuit of my journey and followed the river down to the sandy shore that seemed to ring the island. By this point my feet were beginning to ache and it felt good to walk on the soft, warm sand! I decided to collect a few pretty shells to decorate my shelter and make it feel a little more "homey". I had just picked up a lovely looking striped shell when my eyes met with a red gaze. A female grendel was sat on the beach and must have been watching me for a while!

As I said before, I had been worried and unsure about meeting ettins and grendels. This grendel was far different from what I had expected to find though. It was the female grendel, GrayDragonEmily, and I was surprised to see that she looked very sad and alone. I regret to say that I couldn't quite work up the nerve to approach her and I ended up leaving her alone and walking back through the forest all the way to my shelter. But I feel terrible that I ran away and left her like that. I'm going to see if I can find her again tomorrow and see if we can talk, just as I did with Layla today. I don't really know what to expect with a grendel but she didn't look like a bad person...

...

... Wah! I think my eyes just started drooping there!

It's been a long day today so I'm going to get some sleep now. It's likely I'll be doing it all again tomorrow, after all!

Goodnight, journal. And thanks for listening to me ramble.
