I want to know what minimum system specs I should be targeting with the kreatures project, can everyone post their system specs so I have something to go on?

pls post:

- GB of RAM

- GPU info:
How to find card info

-Processor info:

Open up "System Information" by:
Start Menu > Accessories > System Tools > System Information
Then once in "System Information" open:
System Information > System Summary
On the right will be the "Processor", this will give you the full description of your CPU.

I'm asking for CPU because the ghz/core count doesn't mean very much. An AMD 4 core bulldozer CPU @ 3.6 ghz will be less than 1/2 the speed of an intel 4 core from the same year.

My current build has a CPU with 4 cores and 3.6 ghz, from pre-bulldozer. As you can see it's significantly slower than many other 4 core 3.6 ghz CPUs.

- 4GB of RAM
- ...No clue. My device manager says "Intel HD Graphics".
- Intel Celeron 1005M @ 1.9GHZ 1.9GHZ

And maybe of any interest too?: Maximum screen size: 1366x768 ;)
GPU total memory = 1792 MB

Might be worth using This to see what the average pc gamers specs are.

I've been busy and haven't tried your program out yet but my specs are 6600K i5 4.4ghz, gtx 1070, 16gb ram. Win 10, 3440x1440 resolution.

Is the CC really composed of hardcore gamers? I wouldn't think that the average person in this community would be building their own PC.

It's good that the specs are better than I expected, I thought the average would be closer to @pearldragoness/@bifrost's machines.

Steam is mostly made up of free to play accounts so the average spec isn't what I'd consider 'hardcore'.

I just realised the link was broken. Was supposed to go to the hardware survey data.

With these specs, I wouldn't call this old potato laptop hardcore. It functions, but that's about all I can really say about it unlike my desktops which are far older. [nlaugh]

RAM: 8 GB
CPU: Intel Core i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz(2 Core)
GPU: Unfortunately, like pearldragoness and bifrost, I can't get more info from mine either besides "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family."

From the depths of Deep Lurkspace I emerge... And suddenly can't remember what it is I came up for.

((offtopic))

The Intel HD Graphics Family is just a generic driver. It usually means you have an integrated/basic graphics card. Nothing too spiffy.

Make it as low end as you can, so it will run in everyone's computer. I recently had to downgrade to my 10 years old computer, and it has 2gb and an amd athlon 64 3500+

@Aliena Currently it runs on 100 mb of RAM, but the processor power is causing trouble. I need a better optimization scheme for a lot of it if I want to run on processors like yours.

I've been working on one all week and accomplished very little, this is why there hasn't been a new build in a month or so.

Regardless, that's the reason I'm rolling my own engine instead of using Unity or similar, using unity would force 4GB+ RAM and other constraints, b/c low end non-gamer computers are an important market in a life simulation game--I considered that from the start.

I personally thank you for that. Do you need help with testing?

I occasionally post testing builds in the main kreatures thread, I haven't for a while because I'm stuck on CAs. Basically once I get them working I get a bunch of other things that come with it. E.g. lighting calculations would take < 1/4 the time, because it can transverse the CA field to determine what is possible to be lit, rather than checking everything in a certain radius.

I keep getting something that works, but it simply runs too slow to be usable. And now I can barely focus on them because it feels like a puzzle where I don't have all the pieces to solve it.

I would also like to point out that while 100 mb is the goal, the test build uses 22-50mb of RAM. 20 MB of that is the window itself. None of the functionality. It takes 20 MB to open a window! But that's not as bad as it gets, the only way to run graphics on all platforms is openGL, and it seems to like getting more memory to store textures, instead of reusing the memory it already has. So another 20 is just textures that aren't being used. I even asked on a forum to make sure that I wasn't screwing it up and that's the way openGL is supposed to be, and yeah, that's just what it does.

To put this in perspective: the nintendo gamecube had 24 MB of and can run 3D games with lighting and so on.

The high RAM/CPU requirements aren't a result of what the games are capable of, they're a result of computers being fast enough that people think they don't have to write tight code.

I think it's safe to require 512mb of ram for the game. My 12 years old computer has 1gb.

So while efficiency is good, don't spend most of your time with it, as you have limited time and features are more important.
