Hello!
As a contribution to the upcoming CCSF, I would really like to create a 'pack', which if installed, makes a vanilla DS installation completely grendel friendly.
This pack would have to include (one or a few) grendel breed(s) (at least one with sprites and sound), a few metarooms and a hub, a few grendel agents spread over the ship, a grendel mother and stuff. You get the idea.
Myself, I will be creating one or two metarooms and converting some C1 and C2 agents.
I could use help with the graphics. I would need sprites. Plant sprites, food sprites, vendor sprites, critter sprites, all kind of sprites.
And if you want to create a grendel-themed metaroom background, do it! I might code it.
Who would be interested in their agents/breeds/metarooms being added in the pack? Ideally these should be already existing agents/breeds/metarooms who you wouldn't mind being included with a pack.
Who would be interested in making art?
Who would be interested in developing something new?
Please, speak up, I need you!

I can contribute to the graphic side of the project. Do you have a theme in mind for the agents/room? How many different agents do you think you can realistically code? |

I would like a..grendel-ish theme. So, jungle, mushrooms, swamp stuff, those kind of things.
I could code a lot of things, depending on how complicated the agent is.
I already have some (patch) plant/critter/elevator code which I could just reuse: I could easily make 20 'generic' food/toy/plant things. I don't mind mashing my keyboard to create lots of boring code.
I would also like to recreate some stuff to be able to release a quite complete pack: some kind of inseminator/splicer agent, some vendors, maybe a grendel autonamer, and stuff.

Considering our previous discussion via PM... if you went with a desert theme you could reuse the DD pack items, which would give you a critter, food source, flowering plant, and the calendar, all pre-coded and just needing to have their injection locations changed. I know desert isn't a "classic" Grendel habitat but it fits the breed.
I also have sprites for a Banshee dolly for a tutorial I never finished which are just waiting for some code to go with it... you can download the BMP's at the link. I'd love it if they could be used for this. Heck, you could even recycle the code from one of my Norn dollies and just change the classifier... that's what I would have done since it has all the same animations.

It would also be nice if we could have some genetic variants of the "standard" dustgrendel breed: some color variations and stuff.

A basic desert is nice. It reminds me of pleasant moments of playing creatures 2. The warm dry sand and dust under my bare feet in my childhood and hot stone and wood to climb on...
We have an opportunity to do something new and original, though. It's still a good idea but perhaps we can entertain some different concepts before jumping sword first into the breach. |

Ideally, I'd love to have some kind of "grendel addon", which will do the following:
- A central "grendel hub" (a mix between a bridge and the norn meso: a heatpan, grendel mother/injector, a splicing machine, an agent injector and some vendors/trees/plants.
Inside the hub there would be doors leading to small metarooms, and back to the DS bridge: I'm willing to supply one or two metarooms, I hope the makers of the Grendel Hideout would agree with it being included, and a community project to create the content/rooms would be lovely.
There could be different 'modes': one would just inject the metarooms, the other could remove and reset all favplace icons, go to the grendel hub, disable the door leading back to the agent room, have some kind of storyline, some pick-ups, certain events that have to be completed (camera follow, no pickup, ...) to unlock the rest of the game, like in the 'original' C3.
The aim would be to provide a C3 feeling for those who don't have it installed.
....
... But that's very ambitious.
I'm open for any ideas.

Sound really great. Whether it is overly ambitious really depends on how much coding you can do.
If we have a theme for the room I'm confident I can get enough done graphics wise. |

I'm currently working on a jungle-ish themed room.
The central hub should have to be designed too.

How hard would it be/how long would it take to create another "vanilla" grendel breed? Shouldn't look too different from the dustdevil grendels, except they would be more... dunno, jungle-tied?
- edit: also, I whipped this up. Drag it to the address bar to see bigger image. I did not draw the tree in the background, it's a picture of a bean stalk.
Any suggestions?
- edit2: I made an agent. It's some kind of grendel egg injector: it scrolls through all available grendel breeds on your installation, and you can click on the name to spawn a grendel egg.
I'm horrible at making graphics though: anyone want to volunteer to draw a grendel egg injector?

Pearldragoness, I don't know if you've seen my Dark Devil grendels, but I'd say I'm half decent at genetics. I would love to make some for you. I love the metaroom background you've already made.
If you're having trouble finding them, they were on CCSF 2015. I love playing with colors, these guys have the new fixes to make girls, guys, and every lifestage potentially have different colors. I like working with CFF, but we can use whatever genetic base you want. My grendel breeds are usually peaceful but not scaredy cats. |

Yay, a gengineer!
I would really love to see one/a few genetic breeds based on the dustdevil grendels: they should have distinctly different colors.
I'm not sure yet about which kinds.
Myself, I'd really like to see something comparable to how the Frost norns are made from the Magma Norn: they look like they are an entirely different breed yet they still use the magma norn images. The colors just looks so natural.
And thank you for the kind words about the metaroom! I'm still not entirely sure yet though, any suggestions to improve it?

If you're going to be making metarooms, this is something to keep in mind.
For clarification, steep walls like that tend to trap baby creatures; they'll climb right up the slope and find themselves unable to get down. Steep slopes can also be problematic for older creatures of certain breeds.

The bottom layer needs more plants and mushrooms and stuff, it looks...barren.
So does the right side of the middle layer.
These are problems the vanilla Meso has, I just put cheese plants and the like everywhere, but maybe vines down the right side and mushrooms etc on the bottom? |

Actually I would like the grendel meso to be distinctly different from the norn meso: another shape and a completely different design.
I also would like the entrance door to be at the left side.
It should be much more jungle-ish, more plants, mosquitoes, mushrooms, you know. More like the grendel jungle, but 'cosier' for grendels. Totally not like the norn meso :p

I like it!
Somehow I'm missing a bit of water, though. I'd like it if there were a little teensy weensy bit of water.
Can you also put (w=950) with square brackets between your image tags? That prevents the whole forum from stretching out :p
For the entrance to the grendel "ship", I've also been working on an idea.
I would like to use the existing capillata hub, and add another level to it, just above the doors.
There should have to be an overlay there, with a visible "floor", something that also changes the background of the capillata hub with some extra space above the doors. Something with a jungle-y theme.
Any ideas?
There should also be a lift: keep that in mind when designing the area.
If you want to know where the ground area of the second floor would be, you can open a caos command ingame (ctrl+shift+C), and type "dmap 1" and check the capillata hub: the lines just above the doors would be turned into walking space.
(To remove the lines: type dmap 0)

The bridge that will be used will probably be a joint effort between me and the banshee bridge creator.
I made another image:
Capillata hub will get another level and an overlay background image.
On this new level there'll be a door that leads to the grendel bridge.
Anyone want to make a background?
You can use this as a base (you can change the flooring/decoration/inside stuff/whatever), but the "walking space" will be inside the green box.

Just a quick heads-up: This project is not dead. Far from dead, actually, 2 room backgrounds have been finished, 2/3 are still WIPs, around 35 agents have been made and a transportation system is in place.

Some agents have been injected.
The other two backgrounds are almost-finished, just some small areas need some more refining and some touch-ups here and there

Not much to add, but the idea of completely friendly Grendels is a great one, and I just love how these scaly beauties look. Their hairstyles remind me of purple flower petals, for one.
I'm looking forward to seeing their finished new habitats too! If it hasn't been suggested already for the backgrounds, some bright touches - or accents - could be bright and colourful to reflect their personalities. This just a suggestion, mind! I know I'm late to the party with my comments and I've probably missed most of the creative process. I just think it'd be cool, haha. Certain patch plants could definitely fit the bill. |
