Kinda weird that I'm asking for genetics help when I'm probably the most experienced geneticist in the community at the moment, but whatever. This isn't actually "looking for help," per say - rather, I'm looking for ideas for the best way to implement a trait.
One of the major features of the genetic breed I'm making for the CCSF is that they can go into a "feeding frenzy" - if an overcrowded, starving member smells food, he'll get angry. If they all go off at once, they'll start beating the crap out of one another in a similar manner to the GB Gnarlers.
As of yet, though, I haven't figured out a good way to actually make them do this - my best thought was be a reaction whose rate depends on the level of glucose/glycogen/whatever as dictated by a receptor gene, but somehow that seems somewhat clumsy (and limited to only one type of food, to boot).
So I ask the other geneticists: how would you go about putting this feature into one of your breeds?

Instead of a receptor you add a whole small organ. The speed of organs can be influenced by multiple genes/chemicals at once. This way you could add all basic food types.

My idea is a bunch of reactions that say (Food type) + (That food smell) = Anger/adrenaline. I am not sure if the CA chemicals actually work that way. Or how to factor in over crowding. Paprikos idea sounds good and have some reactions inside the organs. |

That would end up with them losing that food chemical when they smell that kind of food.
You could do a thing where hunger + food smell turns into hunger + anger, that might work.
Another thought - maybe you could create a new brain lobe for it. If you look at Ratboy's brainswitch tutorial, that thing could be adapted to do this. Just have it fire in reaction to a certain mix of hunger (or digestive chemicals), crowdedness and CA smells, and hook up an anger emitter to it.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |
