After speaking with Mea, I've decided to pick up where Liam left off.

Depending on how busy I am over the next couple weeks (Thanksgiving + School Projects are probably going to take up a bit of my time), I plan on getting Chione V1.1 out that has the elevators, door, and some mapping fixes.

Thank you! The fave place icon has some rainbow spew issues, could you please add this to your list of things to do for V1.1? :)

Will do.

The current to-do list:
1. Move the metaroom - there's a bug report on the CCSF site that says it conflicts with the Biodome. I checked it with the Map Editor, and I can confirm that this is indeed the case.
2. Fix a few things that inhibited creature movement (mostly in the leftmost cavern).
3. The elevators + doors that keep popping up.
4. Being me, I saw that the current release of the room was C3 compatible (and I mean completely - you can inject the current release into C3 with the only punishment being the lack of a favorite place icon), and so decided to make the room compatible with both games. As if C3 needed all the extra space. oPo
5. Aforementioned rainbow spew bug.

Yeah, expect this to take a little while.

It's looking amazing ^_^ But it's huuuge oAo Could it be a bit smaller so that it's easier to see all the elements as a whole? ...if that made sense. Someone needs to invent a zoom in/zoom out feature!

I think that is a good list for a v1.1 GMan. It doesn't sound overly complicated, just time consuming.

And while you're hard at work doing that, I'm going to try and get some decorations to work in the Garden Box. As I can't code, it's the best I can do.

Sadly (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I'm pretty sure Chione's size is set in stone and is not changing. Believe or not, there are some areas that would become completely impassible to norns if the room was shrunk (namely the rock and lake tunnels).

Status report: The elevators (henceforth referred to as "Pillars of Teleportation" ) and doors (which I'm calling the "Stone Gateway" ) are both completed and working properly.

I'm currently working on re-adding CA to the room, mainly in the cave system. I've decided that there's going to be no natural source of heat (CA 2) in the room; which sounds like a step backwards from V1, but personally I think it fits the room better thematically.

One additional thing not mentioned in the to-do list is that I'm planning on adding a weather system to the room, that will supply most of the CA on the upper level.

Finally, this isn't related to the room's development...but if you want a song to listen to while using the current release, then this ought to work nicely. I think it fits extremely well, anyway.

The final version of the room should have a native ecosystem. Emphasis on "final version" - V1.1 is going to remain a Biodome-esque expanse; the final version isn't going to be out for quite a while, unfortunately.

There isn't a home smell emitter actually implemented yet, but I've been considering the cave that opens out onto the slopes (the upper right-most cave) as the nesting cave in my notes.

If you don't have heat that makes it basically unliveable -- at the very least very uncomfortable -- for most norns. That seems rather contrary to your usual stance.

Additionally, there should always be *some* heat; there should be something there, even if it's not much.

Realism suggests that actually it would be warmer underground than on the surface.

I don't think there have been any definitive answers on whether heat CA does anything particularly for norns - when I asked the question a while ago, there didn't seem to be a clear consensus on it.

Earlier in the thread, there was a suggestion for one of the lower burrows to be a 'home' kind of a burrow, complete with a stove heater and a norn home emitter. The cave at the top right was considered to be a 'hallway'/'entrance' cave, a temporary shelter.

Hmm; well in that case, would it be worth someone looking into it? I mean, there's no point in anyone including heat CA if it has no effect anyway?

Heat CA is useful for some plants, though (foxglove, cacbana, etc.), and as such is still useful to include for metarooms which are intended as terraforming playgrounds (Bug's Temple, Biodome, etc.). I guess it'd depend on if Grendel Man intends to make the inner layers of Chione 'indoor corridor' or some kind of soil, I guess.

Heat CA doesn't really have an effect on most creatures apart from those that have it in their genetics (e.g. Waterfall Grendels, who are negatively affected by it). It's more used for stuff like plant growth than creature comforts (which is more the job of CAs 6-17, the first three of which ARE required for livability should the room have native food sources), and isn't at all required for creatures to find the room liveable (case in point: Primordia Redux lacks both light and heat emitters, but creatures can live and find their way around in there just fine).

That said, the cave is mostly composed of normal soil. Given that the room's going to be mostly empty for a while, some heat emitters would help to make it more receptive to customization, so I might add some to the cave system. The surface is going to go without regardless, however.

When I included that upper right cave/den in the concept, it was to allow the possibility of having a "home" for creatures on the surface. I was thinking that cave paintings could be used to turn on or off the home smell for the different races.

Light, heat, and bodies of water emitters are now appropriately placed within the Chione cave system. I'm not sure what I want to do about water/nutrient emitters, however - all I know is that I don't want to do the same thing for those as I did for the light and heat.

So, poll time: Which of these three options sounds like the best idea?

1. Muck system: In this, a group of agents gets injected that fall to the ground, and then release water and nutrient CA and die, like the muck that gets spread around when a new C3 standalone world is created.
The upside to this system is that it won't oversaturate the caves with water and nutrients, but the downside is that the water and nutrients will eventually fizzle out unless another source is brought in, since this system is a one-time-only thing.

2. Waterspout system: An invisible agent is placed into each of the caves. This agent will occasionally release a group of another three agents that act like the muck mentioned previously.
The upsides and downsides to this system are the opposite of the muck system - there isn't any worry about losing the water and nutrients, but the waterspouts might oversaturate the caves (take Moe's Room Changer into the Norn Meso and see how much water and nutrients are there - that's the Waterspout System at work).

3. Water Droplet system: Similar to the Waterspout system, a group of invisible agents is placed near the ceiling of each cave. These agents will sometimes produce a visible water droplet that falls to the floor and splashes, releasing water and nutrients.
As it's essentially another version of the water droplet system, the upsides and downsides are similar. However, since the water droplet is visible, there's an additional upside and downside: the water droplets can really help add atmosphere to the caves, but at the same time I'm not so sure how believable water droplets are in a metaroom that's mostly snowy.

I vote #3. And if an icicle could be the things that drop the water droplets, that would seem less out of place than just water dropping from no where. The caves should 'theoretically' be warmer so some ice/water movement is to be expected. If the icicles grew or spread (visually) that would be neat too, but I'm clueless as to how that could even be done.

I like #3 as well, is it possible to have it only replenish the water & nutrients when they start getting low?

As for the growing icicle idea, I would have to make extra sprites for the various stages of the icicles, & what causes them to grow or shrink wold have to be figured out as well.

Make the "growing" icicles the agents that actually manage the water droplets. That should work. And have a button for the Daedalus volcano, if you plan on using it for more than just decoration.

I was just planning on having the water droplets drip from the cave ceiling, as if to suggest that melted snow was drifting into the cracks in the ground and manifesting as water inside the caves. While the icicle idea could work, my problem with that one would be that it'd be rather difficult to make them look like they were naturally attached to the ceiling as opposed to grafted on. I was planning on having the icicles grow by the drips, however, if we do go that route.

To answer how feasible it'd be for the droplets to replenish nutrients/water nutrients only when it was low - it's possible, but it'd be a major pain in the tush. It's easier to just not have the droplets appear that frequently so that they don't increase them too rapidly.

I've no idea how Daedalus is supposed to relate to Chione, since apart from having a vaguely similar shape and having a relation to CoC (I believe Chione was meant to be a part of that series at one point, though it isn't now) the two rooms have nothing in common.

It's good to know the icicle idea is actually possible, even if it isn't implemented. As for getting them to regulate the amount of water and nutrients, I think keeping it simple and having them drip infrequently would actually be more natural.

Chione was a concept I made for the CoC series, but wasn't going anywhere. It was combined with sam's snowy concept and eventually evolved into what you see here. While the root of the room might be in the CoC, it's WAY beyond that now. I am in the process of redesigning Daedalus and you can pm me with any suggestions you might have for it or any of the other official CoC rooms.......expect Morpheri which isn't mine.

Though I had to recycle some sprites from C3, the water droplet system has now been implemented into the cave system. Even with the relatively slow rate at which I set the generators to, there's still a slight build up of nutrients, but I suppose that's what plantlife is meant to absorb.

Only the surface CA and weather system are left to do, then Chione V1.1 will be ready for release!

On a random note, I keep mentally calling this metaroom "Rime" (from the age that was added into realMyst) as opposed to "Chione" (heck, I even thought of it as an "age" instead of a "metaroom" at one point), which makes me wonder if Rime could help with providing inspiration for the objects within Chione.

For those of you who aren't Myst fans and therefore don't know what I'm talking about...Parts 31-33 of this Let's Play document the age of Rime within realMyst.

You are spot on when it comes to getting inspiration from the Rime Age! I found a site that has a couple of great pics of the outside part of Rime, here. It goes along with the "steampunk" feel that sam had been talking about early on.

I also find it quite interesting that the CCSF storyline "ends" on a frozen world. It kind of sets up a back story we could use if we wanted.......with Jessicas help and permission of course.

I have some cruddy background that I made for this meta room a loooooooong time ago, but maybe you could use it??
You could add a secret area that required some fiddling around with to discover - clicking on a rare critter that digs a burrow to the room, for example, or having to go on a scavenger hunt like the Devil's Reef! The background is a typical cruddy ice cave, so maybe you could have a room of frozen rock salt or something??? Something that is white and green and blue and contrasts to Chione's atmosphere, anyway xD

Status update: Chione V1.1 is completely finished. In fact, I have it uploaded onto my download site right now.

That said, I'm not going to officially release it right this second - Survivor's still a few weeks away. That said, I have a proposal to offer: If the slots for the Survivor registration fill up before the start date, I'll release Chione V1.1 early (along with a couple other things).

I have a question about ecology in this awesome room
what kind of plants have you prevoyed to add to the room?

personnaly i view a kind of dwarf Beelacanth-like plant and dwarf desert grass, for a tundra-like flora.

I haven't started working on the plants for Chione yet, but I know some type of pine tree will definitely be made for Chione. There have been plenty of ideas for plants & critters already mentioned in this topic, but feel free to add more suggestions. I'll have to go through this topic again soon to build up a list of potential plants & critters for the room. Once I make that list, I'll be adding it to my Project list of Insanity topic.

Pine trees will be definetely very nice, especially if they are very tall.

And for the room biodiversity i have some suggestions: for the critters a big rhino-like hairy critter would be very amazing, and why not re-use the old reindeer from c1? with some changes it would be a good critter. For more diversity i equally propose a hairy longhorn grazer (if ghoshande are agree ofcoure).

And for the plant, as i suggested before, a short flower-plant will be nice especially in association with a seasonial butterfly. And i also suggested to add to this wonderful metaroom your pale blue radish, it was so awesome. I have view your plants, and they are all wonderful, so i already know that the pine trees will be amazing.
