Detritus fade effect?

Please can someone tell me how I can alter a sprite file to create that semi-transparent "detritus fade" effect that you see in the C3 carrots? I don't want to use ALPH to make things C3-friendly, and because I'm using Edos, I need to work with true transparency, not just true black like in the official spritebuilder. I know that Google is my friend, but I'm not sure of the correct words to use.

Thanks very much for any help! :)

Don't the carrot sprites just make every other pixel transparent, like a checkerboard? I'm pretty sure the balloon bugs and norngarden weed flowers do the same thing.

It looks that way - but I'm interested in reproducing this effect on a different sprite. How would I go about doing that?

My suggestion is to just go into paint, make a checkerboard of black pixels, then just paste it over the sprites. A bit simplistic, but I'm pretty sure it would work.

Isn't it just a dither? (Dither also know as a grid of blacked out pixels.) The C3 clouds are a good example. They have a uniform grid of black pixels on their sprites that look transparent in the engine. If you want to do something like the C3 carrots, just overlay the sprites with progressively "tighter" or densely spaced black pixel grids, which eventually converge to block out the image entirely.

And gumbo is correct. Just use paint or some other basic, non anti-aliased paint package. (Even high-end packages like Photoshop have a "pencil" too though, that gets the job done.) Just copy and paste as the grid gets larger so it doesn't take you forever to lay down the grids. ;)
