Hello everyone. I recently (and accidentally) unearthed an unusual academic study which actually involved the use of DS. (Link)

From what I can gather from the images and what I've read, this appears to be a custom world where there are only two species of creatures; Explorers, which are represented by ettins and Natives, which are represented by those weird Creatures Village mix norns. It appears that whoever was working on this has thoroughly modded the game and potentially the behaviour of the creatures within it. An unusual statistical agent is present in pretty much all of the screenshots as well.

I haven't managed to finish reading it yet but the full PDF is freely available on the site. Feel free to discuss here about what you've seen and read in the paper.

This is a great find! :D The captions seem to say 'time spent exploring', 'capacity' and 'quantity'.

I wonder if the "natives" were based on grendel DNA... they're described in similar ways as the grendels in official documentation (aggressive, etc.).

I meant only on the CAOS and possibly genetic level.

Ow, I see... I thought you meant that they actually messed with core functions of the game in one way or another...

The rooms are also unrecognizable in the screenshots. I see sprites I recognize from C3DS, but I don't think those are publicly available metarooms.

One of the image captions is also something along the lines of "Explorer is attacked by native creatures" so those CV hybrids are also probably not sporting a vanilla norn genome, because I've never seen norns without intentionally aggressive edits swarm an ettin like that.

EDIT: Actually one of the captions is also "Explorer creatures playing a collecting role and trying to get the elements" with said elements apparently being seeds, fruit, etc so those aren't just any old ettins either.

They actually did implement what they needed straight into the genome,

3.4 Implementation details

For the environment generation the following tools were used: Creatures Map Editor
1.08 for the world edition, gimp to develop .bmp images, and sprite builder to convert
them into the frame format. Creatures or agents living in the virtual world are
composed of images, scripts and genome. Since our goal was not to develop a new
world for entertainment purposes but to study social interactions between agents, we
have used already developed creature images obtained from Creatures 3. To develop
creatures’ behaviour, scripts were modified by adding new actions and behaviour
rules described above. For implementation, CAOS (Creatures Agent Object Script)
1.002 and Creatures Engine 2.286, which enable the execution of our world in
Creature 3 and Docking-Station were used. The creatures’ brains (neural network)
and their biological structure defined by the genome (.gen) were generated using
Genetics kit for Creatures 3 1.16.4 enabling adding initial knowledge, states, goals
and actions.
