C3 for a first-time player | |

I'm downloading Creatures 3 for the first time right now from GOG. What should I expect from it - will it be greatly different from C1/C2, will it have new and improved features from the previous games?

I'd highly recommend downloading DS and docking it with C3 - the new engine has a lot of new features and gives the player a lot more freedom. |

C3/DS doesn't have kits, first and foremost. Instead their functionality is given to special machines you'll find in certain metarooms (mostly in the Bridge/Engineering in C3 standalone).
Speaking of metarooms, those are the individual areas C3/DS's world is split up into; it's not one big area like C1/C2 Albia. Getting from metaroom to metaroom is done by clicking on doors or favorite place icons.
C3/DS creatures are generally much better at taking care of themselves than C1/C2 creatures are. However, this comes at the cost of making them more "robotic," in the words of some people. If you're the sort who prefers treating creatures like virtual pets and enjoying individual personalities, then you're not likely to enjoy C3/DS as much. But if you're like me and like running lots of wolfling runs to see how general populations develop, C3/DS is perfect.
I believe those are the biggest changes. There's a bunch of smaller ones.
I'd recommend checking out Arnout's guide if you find you're having trouble with one thing or the other. There's a lot of useful information there.

And how do I do that? Do I open DS first, then open C3?

If you open DS and select the option to create a new world, you should have the option to select a standalone DS world or a docked world with C3 (click on the DS symbol labeled "Capillata only" ).
Note that you'll need an Offline option of some description to actually open the DS world, though. Arnout's guide has a link to one.

What's Capillata? (I think it spelled it wrong.)
I'm looking through the 'Quick Start' manual that came with the game when I installed it.

The Capillata is the name of DS's game world (the Shee Ark is C3's), just as Albia is the name of C1/C2's game world.

So it's not the same as Albia?

Nope. You're not on Albia anymore; C3/DS take place on spaceships (barring third-party metarooms).
Though if you still feel homesick for Albia, C12DS and C2toDS are both worth a look.

I think the official story is that after C1, Albia was going down the drain, so the Shee left, starting the C3 starship AKA the Ark. Years later the Lone Shee, considered crazy even among shee, noticed that he was left behind while working on the warp. He built the capillata. Not having a drive powerful enough to overcome gravity, he leaves Albia using a cataclysmic volcano eruption to blow his ship into space. Albia was devastated. Eventually, with help of the ettins, Albia's ecosystem recovered, cueing C2.

Just hatched my first pair of Norns on C3! They're named Vancouver (male) and Victoria (female). I'm taking a little bit of time to get used to the new interface, but otherwise it plays a little bit like C1/C2.

Picking up norns is the best! And if you ever can't find a machine you were SURE you had put in a certain spot, it's likely that an ettin has stolen it and brought it back to the dessert terrarium. Pesky things.

Also, how do I inject COBs into the C3/DS game world? It doesn't seem to be as straightforward as it was in C1/C2.

If you're just using c3, go to engineering (recycling icon) and it's the machine on the left above the splicer. You can collect the powerups with a creature to make machines more efficient.
If you've got it docked with DS, you can go to the comms room (satellite dish icon) click the button that looks like a sun and click the c3 tab on the right. Some stuff might still spawn back in engineering.
On an unrelated note, the medical equipment and graphs on the lower level of the bridge are pretty invaluable. And it's easy to miss but if you're playing with DS the hoverdoc (the weird brown flying reptile, hit Ctrl+H) can be used to inject emergency cures, tell you what food contains what cures, or release
disinfectant spray.
Also, if you haven't discovered this yet, you'll want to keep the norns out of the Jungle, it's pretty bad with bacteria. |

The powerups only exist in C3 standalone worlds. DS doesn't have powerups and in docked worlds, they are all automatically active.
Also, DS feeds the C3 ship with infinite energy.

I actually didn't know that, it's been years since I've played C3 standalone and almost never use the machines anyway so I only barely remember how that stuff works. |
