Hi, this is an overview of the projects for those who haven't seen this over at Albia2000 or Gameware yet.
Basically the Creatures Community Disk is a project to create a disk that includes lots of Community Content as well as a copy of Docking Station made available at no cost to new users. It is currently in closed BETA but you can go to the site and forums at the address below.
The CCDChat (Creatures Community Disk Chat) is a project to replace JRC with something more hard wearing with an easily available cross-platform server that it is easy to write clients for. It is currently available of the SVN only and is available at the site below.
The official site for BOTH these projects is:
creaturesdisk.net.ms (has a popup ad)
creaturesdisk.profusehost.net (No popup - harder to remember)
You will soon be able to make a donation by ordering a cute teddy, a shirt or a cap from CafePress. See the original post stickied over at A2K if you want more information on an informal basis (unlike the site which is officialised).

Great idea, this. I came across it a little while ago and thought, "Neat. What a great idea!" I bookmarked the page and moved on, but then, I was reintroduced to the project via JRC, and now my passion has been (re)ignited. |

JRC is the best chat I have ever come accross and those of us who have been with it for years won't want something of lesser value. I also hope JRNet will be compatible.

Yeah, I've been very comfortable with JRC for years and have lots and lots of memories from there. Albeit I haven't been around much (except for a few recent days), I doubt I'd be comfortable leaving JRC behind totally and moving on to something completely new. Why kill JRC and move on anyway? Its still up and running, afterall.

Thankyou for your questions, all of us who work with the CCD projects are always ready to hear your opinions on the topic. Below are answers to the questions listed above. The aims of the CCDChat are not and never will be to remove features from the current model. That we all understand that you know and love. It would be pointless to take features away, all that we aim for is to add new features to the current model and improve upon existing features while keeping the same feel about them. Me and lsproc will not allow a release to version 1.0 that doesn't feature all current features and at least one extra. Unfortunately JRNet will not be compatible - though similar clients are easily possible. The main reason behind this is that we are using a different technology for our sending and recieving of messages. Finally producing an alternative to JRC is important to the future of the community, getting in contact with LummoxJR is getting very hard nowadays and getting the server rebooted is even harder. While we appreciate the memorys attatched, we feel that it is important that the torch is ready to be handed on when the time comes that you cannot use JRC any more. |

Ettinshoard: Unfortunately, I think JRC is an integral part of the community. You can't replace it; if it goes down, GreenReaper or someone will find a way to 'carry the torch' and continue JRC.
Perhaps the two can work alongside each other, but please don't assume all the JRC users will go to CCDChat because you say it is 'the new CC chat'. JRC has not only been a rather permanent fixture in the community, but it holds, as angel pointed out, many treasured memories.
IMO, JRC will always be a part of the community - at least, I for one hope so. It is sort of a beacon showing that the 'old' CC still lives on in spirit, and that we now carry 'the CC torch'.

Plus there have been and still are alternative chats. Look at Sine - almost everyone in Sine has come from the CC, they all know what creatures is. Most of them choose not to play the games and have permanently split off from the JRC crowd. But that's what makes it an alternative.
And there's been others. there was an ICE chat and #creatures... and none lasted. And JRC is still alive. Hell, its alive and evolving - the current crowd is nothing like the crowd of two, four, five years ago.
It can be an alternative, sure. But this cannot replace JRC, its not gonna be the same thing on a different server. It'll have a new feel altogether. The newer members might have no problem transferring on to something new since they haven't formed a stronghold necessarily. But this is a good way to discourage the oldbies from coming by at all.

Sorry to disturb the debate.. but our primary project the Creatures Community Disk itself was released yesterday and I forgot to post here! Please download the ISO from our site and point people who don't play creatures towards our site or the A2K topic.

So I've been gone forever and three days, but I'll chime in with this.
JRC has been the defacto Creatures Community meeting place since its inception. It has miraculously survived several major splits, including "#creatures" and "TCC," and it has always been there. Though I'm not around much (if ever) anymore, I would still consider it a sad day when JRC went away forever.
That said, best of luck with the CCD project. Sounds like a good way to get new players involved.

I wouldent be sad if JRC whent down. I cant get it to work. The stupid downloads messed with my computers clock! Hopfully these will be a online program for cc that requires a simple download, and no site entree, similer to MSN. hopfully we could find a way to take the chat box OUT of DS. that kind of thing as a seprete system, not built into a game.

Awmanman, there are programs for JRC too. JRNet is the most common, but there are a few other ones I think.

non-creatures players... isn't the whole point of those chats to bring together those who already play? I guess that's what made JRC rather exclusive. But that's part of why it was so nice and loved.

Well angel, I get the feeling that Draconorn is actually talking about the DISK, which you seem to have ignored in all of your posts. A short update for those who care about the DISK is that we are in the process of moving hosts, and we are looking for agents to be added to release version1.1 |

I'm aware she was talking about DISK. Everything I said about JRC was "as opposed to DISK". Actually, in every post that I have made. I didn't ignore it. I wouldn't be comparing JRC to it if I was ignoring it, would I?

Sorry if I misunderstood your post, but you have been comparing the Creatures Community Disk CHAT which is a system which was intended to provide a new way for the creatures community to communicate. To JRC which is LummoxJr's chatting server.
Draconorn was referring to the Creatures Community Disk, A compilation of Docking Station, community created content and developer tools all on one disk for distribution to new members of the community and people who have not played the game before. This allows them to play without having to download lots of files.
If you mean what you posted above, I would assume that you are comparing a CD-ROM for new people to a chat server... which would seem odd. If however by DISK you meant Chat, I would agree you didn't ignore it.
Anyway, to return to waht I said before and clarrify for angel, I am not looking for agents to be added to version 1.1 of the chat, but I DO want agents for version 1.1 of the disk. Suggestions please ! A list of current agents is available on the CCSF site. |

no no... I really wanted to compare JRC to a CD-ROM. The chat room is much on the same levels as a round silvery piece of plastic with a hole in the middle. Duh!
Disk/Chat - I think when I say disk, you can get the point.

angel, this is getting close to flaming, personally I don't think that your last two posts were really relevant to the discussion I was having. To explain my posts, after draconorn made their post, you made a post which to my mind was not at all relavent to what was being said. 'non-creatures players... isn't the whole point of those chats to bring together those who already play?' when what draconorn, in my opinion, was trying to say was that he was providing a link to the disk. I then explained that draconorn was referring to the disk, to use your phrase 'a round silvery piece of plastic with a hole in the middle'. Next you started talking about JRC and DISK. Which seemed very odd, as you didn't use 'the' or 'a' you just said 'DISK' as if it were an acronym. 'n every post that I have made. I didn't ignore it. I wouldn't be comparing JRC to it ' In which you just said that you were comparing JRC to DISK. Finally, when I attempted to explain you came back with another strange post, in which you said that you wasn't comparing JRC to the disk. You were also quite derogratory to the disk in my opinion, but I will let it drop. I actually don't know what you are talking about now. Clarrification? Thanks alot.
To summarise, the current discussion is about a CD-ROM, not a chat system. Also, on another note, the chat system has now been dropped due to lack of support, a huge amount of opposition. And UDP issues with the server. |

Discussion does not only involve you, actually. The last two posts I made were response to what you personally directed to me, ergo it was directly part of the conversation. When you called the chat thing "DISK", I referred to it the same way. And also I employ a fair amount of sarcasm into my conversation, so I am sorry if you had misunderstood something that I had said. I'll speak on literal terms completely from now on.
That is, I'm sorry that your project is not working out. And it is very tactless of you to accuse me of flaming when i am supporting my own cause and have a different opinion from yours.
