Creatures Docking Station Fan-server? | |

I've been a fan of the Creatures Series for a long time. I started with Creatures 3 and later picked up Albian Years. i enjoyed seeing Creatures Docking Station and loved how I could dock it to Creatures 3 and enjoy a bit of online connectivity with other fans of the game. However, that was a long time ago (obviously to those who remember Docking Station with a server).
I'm happy to see there are still people active with this game and series. I had a thought and wondered if anyone knowledgeable may be able to see if this idea is possible. Is it possible someone could actually modify the game to connect to a server setup by a player? A dedicated server or even using a personal computer as the server somehow. I'd love to see a website, like this one, have an online server that we could connect to and exchange Norns like the good old days.
Is this even possible? |

Very possible, just needs someone with spare time, expertise, and ideally packet dumps from when the Warp was still operational to reverse-engineer the protocol (and hopefully add a bit more of a security layer as it's no longer 2002).
I have one, sometimes two of these things. I know other people with one or two, but not all three. :/
Or maybe someone else I don't know about is quietly working on it. I hope so. |

Ham5ter and SillySina have been trying to do something like that, although the project hasn't reached completion yet: Albian Warp
It's been about a year since the last time the blog updated, but I do think they're still working on it! I really hope they're able to complete it.

The Alban Warp project is probably the community's best chance of getting back to the good old days of portals glowing blue.
Not a small project I'm sure, but one that would breath some life back into the |

I would love it, goodness knows every time in DS I smack that notification away I really wish I could click “login”! I still remember the first time I couldn’t login. Such a sad day. |

As someone who never has experienced Docking Station online, it would be a dream come true if it could be brought back.
I played C3 sporadically since 2011 and grabbed DS a year later.
Since then I've been quietly lurking around on the forums, wondering how it would be like to interact with others through the DS server.
It feels like I've missed out by not being around during the heyday of Creatures and most of the community has already "been there, done that" with the game by now, but I'm glad it's still fairly active and new content is being made. I'd imagine if the Albian Warp project pulls through, it may also attract more new players and help make things a little less stagnant as well. |

It was such a unique and strange time, and nothing I have ever seen has come close to the DS phenomenon.
The model goes against everything the gaming industry has come to embrace. They gave us a free game, with a free online server, and they gave us the tools to make our own mods and expansions. No microtransactions.
They trusted that their product/service was good enough to entice players to buy the "full game" or the mall breeds, but they didn't hold content back behind pay walls, the game was truly free to play. It just seems like something like DS would be so different if it was made today. |

Yeah, it was called Creatures Online and thankfully died before it saw the light of day. |
