'Small Furry Creatures' magazine excerpt

(don't mind me, I resurface occasionally... hope you're all doing well!)

So I follow a blog that posts scans from vintage video game magazines and boy was I surprised to see this one crop up recently... a scan from the March 1994 issue of a magazine called Megazone, featuring images and a short description of 'Small Furry Creatures' from Millenium. I'm sure several of you will recognize that! The description is pretty familiar, though it does make mention of an actual goal, in terms of teaching your creatures to sail, but I thought the two screenshots were most interesting... I don't recall seeing them before ever (and i've been around quite a while!)

Check it out at their blog! (I figured it would be rude to rehost their image.)

Wow, that's fascinating! I've never seen those screenshots, either. Also interesting that they call it a "two player game."

Thanks for the link!

I love it. Would kind of love to play a game based on the description they gave. And can we please somehow figure out how to make that horse thing?! I want one walking around my world.

This is really cool! Very interesting to see those early mock-ups.

I'm glad the game changed it's name before being published.

IIRC, C1's process is actually 'smallfurrycreatures.exe' - it definitely was at one point, but I'm not sure if patches or rereleases may have changed that.

I think the process's filename is actually creatures.exe, but the internal name that shows up in task manager and errors is "Small Furry Creatures."

So that's what Steve means by "I wanted them to be chicken-looking things". I think we can be glad that got meddled with, honestly XD

Their posture reminds me of a Gaius.

Felt like having a look at what old Creatures devs are up to, found this 2010 blog entry of a much older design

http://lisadearaujo.com/creatures-evolution/

Really gorgeous game concept document, haven't read it all but the art is amazing.

Did you mean to say "much newer design"? Because I read the PDF and it's talking about a game concept that was designed after Docking Station.

Lovely art, though.

I've never seen that artwork before, it looks gorgeous. Just a shame it never got past the drawing board.

By the way, does anyone else remember a 3D concept for a Creatures sequel which featured bug-eyed and aquatic norns? There's a video here Don uploaded showing a morph mechanic between the two breeds. I'm not a fan of this art style, personally.

I think SpaceShipRat meant "much older than the blog post." This appears to be a design for a new Creatures game by Gameware Development, so it probably dates from between 2003 and 2007. It's a shame this "Creatures Evolution" never made it past the concept stage - it looks like it would have been a fantastic sequel to the original games.
