Hello!
The contest has begun!
I made a small metaroom with a silly, simple background slapped on, some teleporters in/out and elevines.
I'm now holding a contest in which the community can try to fix up that room as much as possible. Try to make it a place were creatures can thrive. Your possibilities are endless: Garden Box, new/existing plants, animals, agents, vendors, whatever you can think of.
You can make a new background, change existing sprites, you can do a complete makeover. If you don't feel like you could redesign the whole room, no problem, you can just redesign little parts too.
There might be bugs, you're encouraged to try to fix the bugs. No worries, they (probably) won't break your game.
At the end of the contest, all participants could get... uh, dunno. Maybe we could compile the end result into something semi-useable and release it on some day of the CCSF? :p
Now for the file!
The file can be downloaded below.

The contest will end at Sunday, November 5th
You can post all submissions on this topic, or you can PM them to me if you prefer that.
Be creative.
You have endless possibilities. Use them.
Most of all:
Enjoy it!

That's a great idea! I bet the finished metaroom would make a great CCSF submission.
I think it should also have bugs deliberately added that people have to find and fix. |

Defiently Yay!
Possibly the room could be so simple that no platforms are sealed but something you have to solidfiy by using Gardenbox (ie. there's a hidden grind of "air" that ones can GardenBox into solid ground). The con with this is that I know some users are too intimidated by the GB to use it, so this may exclude people.
I have some other ideas too, but I'll spare these for private conversation... If I remember, hurrhurr |

Well I thought the idea is to use the map editor, sprite editor and that. But I suppose it could be made with Gardenbox in mind too.
This sounds like fun, I might have a go |

I'd definitely be down for this!!! Official contest should have links to metaroom editing tutorials just to make things easier for people who want to go down that route.

Customizing metarooms is one of my favorite things to do in C3/DS and I absolutely love this idea! So let me hunt down some wiki links for you: Link to the "Creating a Metaroom" series, map editor tutorial and links to the map editor and the CAOS tool.

I will be uploading the metaroom soon.
I actually made a small thingy already with doors and elevators but I'm sooo unhappy with the graphics. And the general design is quite hard to adjust, actually. Which isn't really good for a fixing-up contest where everyone is encouraged to mess with the design.
So I don't want to post it. Lol.
I'm gonna do it slightly differently:
- How big do you think the metaroom should be?
- How many levels should there be?
- Should there be water?
If you want to, feel free to post a black and white sketch of how you think the metaroom should be divided up.
Once I get 3/5 replies on the lil' questionnaire, I'll post a metaroom agent.
Sorry for the delay. XD

- I think something semi-small is nice, making it more likely that it get's finished but also large enough for more than one person to work with. Maybe something inbetween the desert & the jungle?
- 3 semi-long or 2 longish.
- I find water fun IF it can be sealed off or ain't too deep (aka no drowing pit of doom) |

- Big enough that fixing it is difficult, but not so big that fixing it is impossible. I think Uzag has the right idea with something in between the desert and jungle.
- It depends on how wide the room is, but three levels seems to be a good number for metarooms in general.
- Yes, even if it's only a little space for fish and aquatic plants. My opinion of water in metarooms is that it shouldn't be something air-breathing creatures are able to wander into, but maybe this issue could become part of the challenge somehow. |

The contest has begun!
I've decided to have it run for 3 weeks, till Sunday November 5th.
If additional people pop up that need more time, I'll consider extending it for one week.
I've edited the first post
Some random ideas:
- It'd be nice if there was something seasonal. Maybe foliage could change with the seasons, weather effects, dunno.
- Don't forget day/night changes either! It'd be fun to have a 'responsive' metaroom that reflects the ingame time.
- I think it would be nice to have some animation in the background. Torches? Waterfall? Something dripping? Plants waving in the wind? I dunno, let your creativity flow!
- I personally like lots of little details. Plants in the background on which people can use gardenbox, electronics, lights and maybe some light switches, weather generators, you name it!

Ages back, Liam released a pack called "Unfinished_Worlds.rar" which contained much unfinished material from the development group Metacore. There may be a few files there that may be useful in developing this metaroom.

I'm having way too much fun making mock-ups.
The weird grey thing at the top right could be some kind of weather generator which takes water out of the pond and uses it to generate clouds. It could also possibly have some kind of environmental control panel.
I'm not gonna do any of the graphics, by the way, this is only a mockup. Pointing out what kinda things could possibly come where and stuff.
You don't have to adhere to this design at all. Just let your imagination go wild.
If you're not gonna do any backgrounds, but you still want a -slighty- prettier background while working on stuff in the room, I've got good news! I had to try out whether this background changing stuff was actually possible in game, and while doing so I compiled it as an agent. This agent can be downloaded here.
Also, if you people have any WIP things, ideas, mockups you want to share... Feel free to throw it on the topic!
Also, some heads-up: Uzag (Artist for the Grendel Hideout and the Biodome) has volunteered to merge all the background submissions together nicely. Yay!

I added the Github repository of the project in the first post.
Feel free to contribute!
Also, if any artists are reading this: Feel free to contribute some images! It can be anything. A toy, some machinery, a tiny detail, a glowing thing, decoration, a plant, a statue, a... anything. It'd be really neat if we have small details to put in the room background

All the Dots, make me think there should be some kind of Particle System in Place.
One could easily make a System that lets every agent emit its own particles, but what i think about is a more ressource saving way.
like a central Agent, that controlls the Ammount, and also the emition Rate, stuff like that.
this Agent could also make use of the Viewport / Camera Information, and only start emitting Particles if the Player actually sees them, and also disable them when a Wolfling Run is started...
Particles could be used for:
- Torches
- Clouds
- Smoke
- Mushroom spores
- Falling Leaves
- Those Light emmitting plants could contain Glowing Bugs, and release some, ever so often.
meh.

This is such a cool idea. I don't have any skills to contribute, but I'll be really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!!

No-one contributed anything substantial in the end.
Malkin contributed a stock Creatures image of an atlas.
Vermidia helped fixing the elevator code.
That is all of the submissions though, therefore I am not going to release this room for the CCSF. It's far from complete.
However, I'm planning a different approach.
This project could be changed to last for one year.
Each month, there'll be a specific subject. Like, one months of "metaroom concept", one month of "lifts", one months of "bug/critter", one month of "plant", one month of "food", one month of "catalogue", one month of "music" etc.
Then everyone can submit something according to the themes that are currently running that month. Late/open submissions would totally be accepted too.
Then at the end of the year there could, hopefuly, be a more complete metaroom which can be released. Maybe for next year's CCSF.
Any thoughts?

That sounds like a good idea, particularly as there wasn't a good response to the challenge. I'm sorry I couldn't contribute more, but this year is particularly busy for me. Perhaps more tutorials/dev knowledge is needed as well? I could open the metaroom background in GIMP, but couldn't manage to get images to move to where I wanted them to go, even if I put them into their own layers.
