How we discovered Creatures

A few years back I was reading an article online about alternate gameplay. (E.g. Playing an FPS without killing anything, that one kid who played skyrim as an npc, that sort of stuff.)

One of the entries in the article was Antinorn and the Norn torture community, and of course the article started with a brief description of Creatures.

I had never heard of this "Creatures" game before, but boy did it sound right up my alley! The rest is history :)

Remembering this made me curious how y'all discovered the game. Maybe it was a Christmas present? Saw it at a software store? Discovered it when the GOG release dropped? Read about it or saw it at a friends house maybe? :)

When I was in 3rd grade, I went to computer class in my school, after regular classes. We were allowed to play some games after doing activities, and one of the games they had was Creatures Albian Years. My friend had already vaguely told me about the game, but when I saw it with my own eyes, I was hooked instantly. The teacher tried to demonstrate how the game was played (though he didn't really know). When I got home I made a drawing of the C1 Albia and the two Norns there (a male Pixie and a Banana, apparently).

I started playing the game in class, mostly C1 - I remember sharing a world with a friend and a C2 world with some other kid. Eventually I asked the teacher where he got that game, and he told me the store. I went there with my grandparents and we got it! And the rest is history c:

20 years ago I saw it on the shelf in Game and fell in love with the box art. The rest is history. :)

My Dad bought Creatures 2 for me.
It was actually attatched to a newspaper that I think was being sold on a market stall but he thought I would like the game, and I loved it. :P

A new library I hadn't been to before also rented out video games.
I saw C2 in there and I took it home. Since then I loved the series. I also lent C3 from a library, and my dad once brought home a C1 CD. I'm not entirely sure when the C1 CD happened though, before or after the C2 library discovery.

Was it just the CD, Pilla, or did you have the Egg Disk too?

My friend has creatures 3 , both played it together. Then burn the cd for so I could play it at home that was in 2001. Then she burn c1 for me. So I have both c1 and c3 that my friend did for me. I had played docking station for along time. I remember when docking station online for a long time. Last time it was online was 2005. Does anybody remember what year did docking station stop going online.

I think my granddad got a copy of it after he saw it in a science magazine, he got one for himself--he was a computer guy, in his 80s, worked on the original US military computers--and one for my sister and I. So i started playing it when I was about 5, and learned how to use a computer by playing creatures.

I think it was 12 years ago, I was hooked on virtual pet / life simulation games, (that never changed of course) and I googled a list of those types of games, of which, Creatures was one of them. Since I had no money, and Docking Station was free to download, that's what I went for. It was incredible, even more so after I figured out how to install user created agents/breeds.

Funny story, I was pretty sad that I couldn't/didn't know how to add new breeds, because, so many of them looked cool (Both user-created as well as the official.) One night I dreamed of well... a norn that I recall looking a lot like the Dream Norns, after that, I figured out how to add new breeds into Docking Station, and it was a really cool experience! Later down the road, I went on to buy Creatures 3, and then eventually Creatures 1 & 2, though, they haven't gotten as much love as Docking Station.

Child FaerieHawk was in BlockBuster looking at video games to play one weekend with her grandparents. While her brother was looking over some random games she wandered to the for sale games section. A playstation case caught her eye. An animal with bright blue eyes and a huge smile was looking out at her. "Raise Me", "Feed Me", "Love Me" on the right side of the cover. "Featuring Cyberlife technology" in a little purple starburst above the title. Curious, she looked at the back of the package for more information and found out it was a game where you have virtual pets. They looked adorable so she asked her grandparents if she could have it. They said yes and she took it home and loved it so much!

Then a few years later she decided to look up creatures again. She discovered that there was a better PC version! She told her grandparents, excited.

Then one day her grandfather came home from work with a copy one of his co-workers had of the creatures trilogy. (And when I say copy, I mean copy of questionable legality.) She got to play creatures 2 and 3! But something felt wrong... not only did she not like playing a copy like that but her PC couldn't really handle it. So sadly creatures was lost to her again for a few years. However she never stopped loving Norns and whenever she felt a creatures pang she would visit the Creatures Wiki and read about custom breeds and other sites!

Now here we are and I'm finally a member of the community I shadowed for years. :P but I still get distracted from playing creatures...

I'd say my first real encounter was of C3. Not sure how common this was but, as kids, we often passed around these... home-burnt pirate CD's that was full with compressed hack-crack games, complete with viruses ^^;;
That's how I got my first copy of Creatures 3, heh. I played the heck out of that game, continously discovering new things as I never had any instructions for it. Shamefull way to obtain it though... But I may as well admit to this sin. On the other hand, I never saw C3 in stores here? o_O

About 8 years later, when shopping online & internationally was new, I got help to finally get a real official copy of the game imported :>
Must been one of my first online purchases!

My first Creatures game was C2. I sort of just received it, I don't really know where the CD came from. At the time, I often played Dogz/Catz, and Creatures was a step up from those games - it was a little more 'realistic' in that your pets can actually die, whether from being seriously ill or just from old age.

I didn't play C1 until a few years later, when I got the Albian Years and Village CDs together.

Well, I wish I had a nice story like some of you guys, but essentially I was seeing it when my parents played C3 and wanted to give it a whirl. I vaguely recall mentioning it in prime school when I was supposed to tell what I did in my holidays, pronouncing it in the most horrible and german way possible. I did not get most of the concepts, but I had great fun creating grorns in the splicer.

Kind of related, but does anyone know what I could mean? Back in my childrens days I thought there was a way to "unsplice" a creature, where the game at least tries to GUESS what two creatures might result in this spliced one. I never actually managed to find a tool or download like this and with my knowledge of now I doubt if it was real afterall... However, if I do miss something like that, please know, yes? Like I said, basically it tried to extrapolate 2 possible parents from a creature.

My mother introduced me to Creatures 3 when I was 8. She got it from an acquaintance and thought that the game was too hard. I saw her play it at some point and wanted to give it a try. And well... You probably know the rest of the story. :P

Gotta say, I'm loving this thread and reading everyone's stories. :) It was 1996, and I was in Electronics Boutique (now known as 'GAME' over here in the UK) with my parents when my mother pointed out Creatures to me, in its big white box. She knew I liked Tamagotchis and so said that this would be a good game for me to try. The rest is history! As it turned out, my best friend at middle school had also recently bought Creatures so we were able to play the game together and talk about each other's Norns. :P If it wasn't for my friend, maybe I wouldn't have got into Creatures as much as I did.

GimmeCat, what did the box art of your copy look like? I'm dying to find an image of mine online, but can't find it anywhere. Maybe you had the same? It had a white background, with 'Creatures' at the top in black lettering, and a baby Norn poking its head out of an egg in the center. I wish I hadn't given that copy away after I bought Creatures Deluxe now, because it's obviously a bit rare!

I had just had surgery and was going to be bedridden for a couple weeks with just my laptop to keep me company, so I thought I would look for a virtual pet to take care of during the time of my recovery, I entered a search thinking something like a computerized tamagotchi would come up, but Docking Station free download came up. I downloaded it and was hooked. I then sent off for the Creatures 3 cd and paid extra for faster shipping. I've since purchased the other games in the series.

Back in 1998, when my mum was pregnant with me, my dad was coming home from a business trip and forgot to get my mum a present. He picked up a CD of Creatures 2 at the last minute, said raising norns would help her practice raising a kid. Mum couldn't get the little blighters to eat, and they all starved, and it distressed her so much she boxed up the game and never touched it again!! Fast-forward a few years to when I'm a little kid, and I found the CD hidden away. Installed it and fell in love!!
