It's been five months into 2015 and nary a word has been spoken about the CCSF. Let's fix that, shall we?
I'll admit that I'm hardly the most optimistic person about this age-old tradition. In fact, I was reasonably certain that this would be the first year without a CCSF. In its stead I considered just holding a "Creatures Appreciation Week" over at my blog. Then I considered asking for other people to send stuff into that...and at that point, I decided I might as well try coordinating a CCSF.
So here I am!
To kick things off, I decided to create a survey much like past coordinators have done. Unlike past coordinators, however, this first survey is a little different. Instead of asking the usual questions (where should the CCSF be hosted, how long should it run, etc.) I instead opted for a "thought collection" survey; that is, what everyone thinks of the tradition and how it's best handled. The usual questions will show up on the next poll.
CCSF 2015 Survery #1
This will run for roughly a month (so until late June - early July), though it'll probably remain open throughout the planning process since none of the questions on there are really specific to 2015.
Let's see what we can do.

I can't fill much of the survey out as I actually haven't been around for past CCSF events! I might try participating this year, though. Maybe release an agent or two, now that I'm learning how to do that! |

Could someone cross-post the survey to the Creatures Online forums (if that place is active enough to warrant it)? I couldn't set up an account there due to e-mail funkiness.
Also, I just set up the e-mail for submissions. Although it is kind of early to be thinking about that right now, I'd say it's better to think about it early than late. Submissions will officially open once the time and place is decided in a later poll.

What's the email address for submissions? I've cross-posted the poll on the We Love Creatures tumblr, because I think that gets seen by a lot of people.
I've posted a thread on the Creatures Online forums, too.

The address is ccsf.2015(at)yahoo.com. Again, as the CCSF doesn't even have a date yet they're not technically open, but I'm not turning down anything that comes early.

Excellent!
I don't know that I'll be able to release very much considering my schedule, but I'm still looking forward to seeing how things go. I know you'll do an excellent job of coordinating, mister GM.

I'm very excited to see this going forward. I'll definitely throw together a genetic breed. Should we go for a theme or just kind of play it by ear? Thanks Grendel Man for putting the time and effort into coordinating this. |

I have a creatures themed tumblr, and I'm thinking of hosting a giveaway for the games there during the CCSF - it might be a nice way to reach people who remember the games, but no longer own them. In the past it's been decided by a popular vote. I think Steampunk has been often-nominated in the past, but it has not yet won any of the polls. It isn't compulsory to keep to the theme, either - you can treat it as a bit of 'flavour', if you like.

You could do a Tolkien themed one!!! No, seriously, I can't imagine what people would have to send in, I'm just a huge Tolkien fan. Maybe a history themed CCSF? That might be interesting

What are we most in need of right now? Which... categories? Breeds, metarooms, misc tools? Personally I'd like to see some new sprited breeds.
Maybe that could be a starting point for a theme. We've had themes like "ecology" or "new worlds" proposed or accepted before.
On another track entirely, maybe something about random generation? we've had that playthrough generator, that idea might be extended. And there's a lot of things that can be random within Creatures, tints, name generators... |

The date and the theme will be determined in the next survey, which will likely be going up shortly after I return from my road trip (mentioned in the absences topic). The current survey still has a few weeks to go yet.
The CCSF has generally taken place over the first two weeks of November since 2009, and it'd probably be safe to assume that 2015's going to follow suit as far as submissions are concerned. For a theme, I have an idea of my own, but I'll save discussion on that for later.

I'm heading home from my road trip today. It'll likely be another week or so before I actually get home, but when I do I'll post the results from Survey #1, fire up Survey #2, and officially open submissions.
Survey #1 will likely remain open throughout the whole planning process, but if you have any thoughts you'd like to get out right now about the CCSF I highly recommend taking it if you haven't already.

The time has come to move on to the next stage of planning. The first order of business is make the results of the previous survey public, and here they are:
CCSF 2015 Survey #1 Results
Thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute! As a reminder, this one will remain open until the CCSF 2015 draws near, so don't feel too bad if you missed the opening date.
So, it's time to move onto the next survey:
CCSF 2015 Survey #2
This is the standard "what, when, where" survey most past CCSFs begun their planning with. Do try to be thorough with your responses; one-word replies and their ilk are not very helpful.
Also, I've also decided to officially open submissions now, just to maximize the amount of time people have to work on them. Please send all contributions to:
ccsf(dot)2015(at)yahoo(dot)com
To end this off, I'll give my own thoughts on things.
I'm in favor of the traditional November date. It's worked out well enough for the past however many CCSFs, and it'll offer a decent amount of time for people to work on contributions from now until the festival's start. However, I am open to the idea of changing the festival's length; in the past, the distribution of the submissions throughout the festival sometimes got pretty thin. Having a bunch of more tightly packed releases over, say, one week could possibly make for a better CCSF than a bunch of sparsely distributed releases over two.
For the place for hosting it...I would rather not host the CCSF 2015 on Creatures Caves if I have a better option. Although 2014 at least tried to stand out more, the two CCaves CCSFs had massive trouble differentiating themselves from the rest of the site and they suffered for it as a result. Furthermore, one of the replies to Survey #1 made a very good point: hosting it here made the CCSF look like a feature of Creatures Caves when in reality it should be an event that spans the entire community. It's the sort of event that absolutely needs its own website.
Where would I put it instead? I'd love to have it be at www.creatures.org.uk, the traditional hosting place of the CCSF, but sadly I'm not sure how feasible that is. Worst come to worst I can put it on Blogger ala CCSF 2012, since that festival was, at least to me, one of the best, but if anyone has a better idea then say so in the survey.
Finally, the theme. I have an idea of my own I've been pondering ever since I chose to take the task of coordinating: the will to survive.
No, this isn't Darwinism or any other scientific related thing. I'm talking about the community's will to survive. The will that, long after the demise of Creatures Labs, keeps us playing this series, finding new things about it years after its release, and forging new addons for it when it could have died so long ago. We're still talking about it, sharing our findings and the fruits of our labors, and showing off all that we've done with and for it. Years after we've practically been abandoned, we're still alive and refuse to die.
This is the will that the CCSF is a testament to, and ultimately celebrating.
Alright, enough rambling from me. Let's keep on trying to show the internet what we can do.

If you're keen on using creatures.org.uk, you might like to try contacting Don - I've seen her recently on the Creatures Online forums.
I agree with the notion of shortening the CCSF if there aren't enough releases to sustain it - it was only lengthened beyond a week originally due to lots of releases being sent in.

Another month brings the official end of another CCSF survey. Here are the results for Survey #2:
CCSF 2015 Survey #2 Results
Not as many responses as there were to Survey #1, which is kind of disheartening, but what can you do.
And here's the final planning survey for the CCSF 2015:
CCSF 2015 Survey #3
This survey will finalize the theme and events for the CCSF 2015. As for the date, length, and location...I've ultimately decided to make the final calls on those myself, for what I think would lead to the most successful festival.
The start date will be Sunday, November 1st. The usual November date just sounded like the best idea for giving the maximum preparation time and for the sake of tradition. The length of the festival will depend on how many submissions I get; if people want a two week festival then I'll have to get enough submissions to justify it. Otherwise the festival will probably only be one week this year.
CCSF 2015 will have its own website. My earlier opinions on having Creatures Caves host have not changed. If anything, I'm even more opposed to having it be hosted here. In light of recent events, the atmosphere here would almost certainly hurt what is supposed to be an important event, and I'd like as many people as possible to feel comfortable submitting to and enjoy the CCSF 2015.
I've added the above information to the poll's description just so people are aware of it, but if you'd like to post this poll elsewhere feel free to add the above reasoning to it.
Also, a reminder that submissions are open until November 1st. I've only one submission so far and will need a lot more for a successful CCSF. Send submissions to ccsf(dot)2015(at)yahoo(dot)com! You can use the form below to make describing your submission easier, although as long as it's not offensive I'll accept it regardless of whether or not it adheres to the form.
Author(s):
Name of submission:
Game (C1, C2, C3, DS):

Description:

I have no objections to anyone else wanting to run an event of their own. I'm actually open to giving those a section of their own on the CCSF website once that's up and running.
Also, I was a dunce and forgot to make the second question required. That's been rectified, though thankfully everyone's who taken the survey thus far answered it when it was technically optional.

The final poll's been open long enough and I've gotten enough replies that I feel it's time to make the final set of decisions.
CCSF 2015 Survey #3 Results
The theme that got the most votes was Community Longevity/Endurance, e.g. the "will to survive" that I proposed back before Survey #2. However, Ecology and Seasons were a close second and third.
As a result, I've decided to give all three of those equal billing. This makes the themes for the CCSF 2015 Community Endurance/Longevity, Ecology, and Seasons. If someone could come up with a snappier and simpler way of phrasing that it'd be much appreciated.
As for events...every one of them got a fair amount of support. I'd like to use all of them, but unfortunately the participation in the events last year was a bit dismal. For the sake of narrowing things down, I've decided to eliminate the two least popular: The Creature Beauty Contest and the Haiku Contest.
So this makes the event list look something like this:
*Community Wolfling Run
*Creature Adoption Sampler
*CC Chat Flashmob
Plus whatever events other members of the community might want to run.
To sum everything up:
*CCSF 2015 starts Sunday, November 1st.
*It will last for One Week unless enough submissions are sent in to justify making it longer.
*It will be hosted on its own website.
*The themes are Community Endurance/Longevity, Ecology, and Seasons.
*The coordinator-hosted events are:
**Community Wolfling Run
**Creature Adoption Sampler
**CC Chat Flashmob
I think that about does it for planning. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the surveys!
Finally, an additional question: Does anyone know what Don's current e-mail is? As stated previously, I'd like to use creatures.org.uk for the CCSF 2015 for old time's sake, and I believe Don is the one who owns that domain.

A CC Chat flashmob? That's news to me! Awesome though.
I'm really pleased about the theme too, especially the seasons aspect. That will be so much fun, because you can approach it from so many different angles, plus it's a theme we've never had before!
As for contacting Don, the most reliable way of getting hold of her seems to be sending her a message via Facebook. She's on my friends list, so I could message her and direct her to this topic, if you wanted? There's also her e-mail address, admin(at)amberz(dot)net, which could be worth a try. I'm just not sure how often she checks it, if at all, these days. |

Just your monthly reminder that the CCSF needs you.
The Community Wolfling Run and CC Chat Flashmob surveys could really use some more replies, the Adoption Sampler needs some creatures, and I'm in need of submissions of all sorts (I only have two so far; can't make a good festival with those alone).
Let's keep trying to make this CCSF the best it can be. Even if it doesn't manage to be completely mindblowing, I bet we can still make it really enjoyable if we just put our minds to it.

Yess, seriously excited about the CCSF this year. The theme is amazing, and I love the fact that the adoption sampler is coming back! It was amazing in 2011, and I'm sure it will be amazing this year. If all goes well on my end, I'll likely have a toy agent and a genetic breed. Even if I don't I'll have a pack of Norns for the sampler.

Agreed! When I first heard about the theme I felt really pleased and encouraged; I think it's an ideal one for the community this year. I'm hoping to submit some agents, including an agent pack, if all goes to plan!
It's great to see the adoption sampler making a return too. I remember there being such an interesting variety last time, I don't think there was one dull creature in the mix. And of course, we in CC Chat are excited to host the CC Chat flashmob event for you all; let's hope as many people as possible join us for that! It makes for a really nice atmosphere. |

The idea was mostly "divorced from any one website" rather than "completely independent." That is, that people would see the CCSF as its own thing rather than as a feature of Creatures Caves, my blog, etc.
Since creatures.org.uk seems to have only ever been used for CCSFs, I figured it would be best to have it there both for the aformentioned idea and for nostalgia's sake.

OK. Well if that doesn't work out and you just need space on a server we could host it on this server but independent of this website.
It could be ccsf.creaturescaves.com or creaturescaves.com/ccsf or if someone purchases a domain like ccsf.com it could point to the space as well. You would have direct FTP access, databases if needed, etc.
