Grendel Man's C1 Breeds

Didn't think this was news-worthy as this is mostly old stuff. The title was supposed to read "Grendel Man's C1 Grendel Breeds," but that didn't fit. Well, I suppose a more general title works. But I digress...let's get to the point of the post!

Since Jessica's recent Youtube video detailing C1 got me to pick up the game again, I decided to upload all the stuff I made for it in one, convenient location. At the moment, the five breeds here are all rather old, but I might make more at some point depending on motivation.

All of these are grendels, since for me C1 grendels are far more amusing to play with than C1 norns.

For people who don't like Mediafire, you can grab the first four breeds from the CCSF 2007 website. However, the Scortch Grendels sadly don't have a home to call their own just yet - CU7 lacks a C1 section. Okay, moving on.

I based all of these guys on Slink's wonderful Multi-colored Grendels. So among other things, they can breed and have flight-or-flight genes.

Each breed was given its own post due to the forum objecting to my initial post (which wound up being due to formatting errors on my part - oy). I apologize for all the multiple-posting (although it does look slightly better this way).

Each .zip has a genome file and two export files. If you use the import files, you'll get an error message that reads "Access to was denied." This is due to the import files being read-only, and is in fact not a bad thing. When this pops up the creature still gets imported without issues, but the import file remains wherever it originally was. In other words, you get infinite uses out of one import file. It's a spiffy way of getting around C1's lack of Hatchery customization and egg layer.
------
The rest of this post shall detail potential future breeds I might make. If they ever get completed, I'll give them their own post just like I did with the initial five.
------

Darkling Cave Grendels

This shy breed of grendel typically inhabits Albia's underground, so they've developed a slight resistance to cold and don't get sleepy in dark areas. While normally fearful of other creatures, they will attack anyone who touches them - friendly or otherwise.
*In progress*

Swamp Grendels

These grendels are typically found around the foot of the grendel tree, munching on the muddy swamp carrots. They're noticeably tougher than standard grendels, having a stronger immune system and thicker hide from being bitten by cave flies.

Outburst Grendels

Similar to the Darkling Cave Grendels, Outburst Grendels don't take well to overcrowding or harassment. Where the Darkling Cave Grendels get scared, however, the Outburst Grendels get angry. If attacked, they will retaliate quickly and painfully. They are also unlikely to back down once riled up. That said, Outburst Grendels are actually fairly friendly if not overcrowded or hit.

Aqua Grendels

Okay, not "Aqua" grendels per say. These are my interpretation of an aquatic creature if such a thing were truly possible in Creatures 1 (which lacks water). Among other things, they're cold-resistant and have a better immune system.

Crab-Eater Grendels

These are a quirky breed I made to go along with Steve Dismuke's Coconut Crabs. While they can and will eat normal food, they mostly subsist on critters - namely, the aforementioned Crab COB (I've uploaded it to the COBs section, as Fig's Tree has sadly gone down). The crabs have made them so resistant to pain that it's rare to see one actually flinch. These guys are my second favorite of my C1 breeds currently (I'll get to my favorites in a little while).

Erzan Grendels

Translation of the name: Random gibberish that I thought up and found fitting. No, I'm not kidding (I named my C2 Kartark Grendels in the same way).
These grendels are basically reverse Shee. The Shee is a warm-blooded creature that can suffer from hypothermia. The Erzan Grendels are warm-blooded creatures that can suffer from hyperthermia - that is, they can overheat if their internal cooling system malfunctions. That's their main gimmick, although they're also slightly more placid than the standard grendels.

Light Grendels

These were the first breed I made for C1, inspired by dabblings in making a photosensitive grendel. These guys get all their nutrition from light and don't need to eat much.
They're my least favorite of my breeds, mostly due to the fact that they're very sloppy by my current standards (among their other features: immunity to glycotoxin. Yeah, there goes all the challenge of keeping one of these buggers...).

Scortch Grendels

I've saved the best for last. The Scortch Grendels are a breed that I made a while ago, but only now are seeing the light of day on the internet. Even by my current standards, these guys are still my favorite out of all my C1 work.
The Scortch Grendels feed off heat. If kept in a hot area, they typically won't need to eat. They're also quite resistant to heat. However, coldness has the opposite effect - it drains them of nutrients, makes them extremely hungry, and sends them into a state of sluggishness and torpor. In fact, cold is practically lethal to them. As a result, they're actually a bit more difficult to care for than standard grendels, as disease has the potential to inflict them with cold. If not cured rapidly, they'll die within several minutes.
I also tried making them slightly more aggressive than the standard grendel, but I don't think it worked out so well in practice. But oh well.

Awesome, Grendel_Man! I'm glad my video got you back into C1: Always nice to know that my commentary and recording skills have some impact, besides the occasional laugh! Now I'm certainly thinking of having a C1 Grendel world in the future featuring some of these breeds. Great work, and thanks so much for sharing!

I'm definitely going to try out the Skortch Grendels later. I can also give you a place to host these breeds if you are interested.

I've added a few things to the first post (notably some potential future breeds - of them, the Swamp Grendels are the closest to becoming reality).

Ylukyun: I'll take you up on that offer if you have a dedicated C1 section (last time I looked at it, it seemed to be all C3/DS).

Looks cool : D
you realy make your'e name worth it ;P

I just wonder - the heath and light parts in c1...I never came to see how you can easily monitor where those are most in the Albia areas o.o?

As I had no clue at least that light sources exist in c1 O.o *blinks*

I do know I had probs with coldness and hotness in my norns as well...wich allways made me ponder...the c1 shower ingame,is it showering warmth or cold water? XD

GM: I meant creating a website for you to store your breeds, probably a blog. You could upload them and it would be at a subdomain. It's no trouble if you (or anyone else) want one.

Norngirl: The wiki just says creatures' discomfort drives will lower. I imagine that means reducing hot or coldness, whichever is present, but I haven't seen the CAOS.

If anyone's interested, there are some temperature altering COBs here.

Standard C1 creatures can feel hot and cold at the same time, as the drives do not cancel each other out. I've found that something which reduces both heat and coldness is the best - like the gentian, or the PM hootch I made. There's a gene in the yin-yang norns which causes hotness and coldness to cancel each other out - Jessica discusses it here. :)

Edit: I've started work on the Darkling Cave Grendels. Check out the preview in the first post. :D

Norngirl: I actually don't know myself - judging by the fact that a photosensitive grendel was in pain regardless of where I put him, I think that all of Albia is full of light. Then again, it must vary somewhat or Slink's Shiitake Mushroom Log wouldn't be quite so effective.
Same goes for heat, although I'm also assuming that it varies.

Ylukyun: In that case, I'm interested. Not just for hosting my C1 breeds, but potentially everything I've made. It'd be nice to be able to have conventional download links instead of having to list the files as "attachments" or having to link to a file-sharing site.

Very cool! :)

I've got plenty of space too if you wanted room for a site (at www.creaturesvillage.com/whateveryouwant/) or for downloads. I'm on don (at) computerpetz.com if you need anything.

Ylukyun: Either way is fine by me.

Don: While Ylukyun's got me covered for right now, I'll keep your offer in mind if I start running out of room. :)

My initial test run of the Darkling Cave Grendels was quite promising (the test grendel acted much like I wanted him to act), so I'm probably going to release them soon. "Probably" being the key word there; my attention got diverted away from Creatures again.

Now that I have a couple of these awesome Grendels in my world, I have a quick question about them. Do I need a separate COB/world for them to be fully breedable? I should have asked before I started a new world, but leave it to me to leap before I look!

My newest Grendels look adorable, though, and I'll be happy with them even if they can't have their own babies down the line. Thanks again for these, Grendel Man!

I'm not too sure about that - I've never had them breed in my worlds. I know their base (Slink's Multicolored Grendels) are supposed to be breedable, and can be made so in any of the usual ways (I think Grendel Friendly allows grendels to breed; not too sure, though).

I'll keep an eye on them, then! I have the Grendel Friendly COB installed at the moment: I'm pretty sure you're right in saving that it will allow them to breed. Otherwise, all of their interactions would default to slapping. I had my male Norns kisspop with my female Grendels in my last world, so it definitely seems possible! Thanks for the extra information in the comments at Discover Albia, too!

According to The Truth About Grendels, Grendel Friendly allows breeding. I suggest that you bookmark this website now you are concentrating more on Grendels, it's a great resource for a C1 Grendel breeder.

I just downloaded the Scortch and Erzan Grendels, and I absolutely adore them. I have the Friendly Grendels COB installed as well, and was able to breed them with no problems.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Darkling Cave Grendels once completed :)

There is a world that allows grendel breeding, its the same as albia, just the scripts have been altered. I believe its available on Muppetboys website.
