Hi there !
Since I've got a new laptop, I decided to come back on C3/DS. In the past, I was playing on a very old machine, and so I had frame rate problems especially on DS. But now that I've got a super new computer (an Asus G46VW), I was expecting a stable frame rate to play my favorite game.
But it's not working.
I mean, I've got some questions about Creatures Exodus' frame rate.
I analyze my framerate using the Wolf Control. When I launch a DS or C3 world with no creatures in it, the framerate stay at 20 frames/sec. This is not high, the game is flickering, but I think it's normal.
Moreover, when I begin to add some creatures, some agents... This framerate rapidly decrease : in my actual DS world with 25 norns and C1toDS, I only have about 10 frames/sec which is VERY annoying (and which did not occur on C1 or C2 !). If I put a higher number of creatures, I can fall around 5 frames/seconds.
The thing I do not understand is that I've got a quite powerfull computer, and even if DS use one single CPU core it should run smoother than that.
So my questions are :
Is the game framerate limited to 20 frames/sec max ?
Is there a way to prevent my framerate loss without limiting my number of creatures, agents and metarooms (considering the fact that my computer should be able to hang on).
And at least, one last question : C3 and DS fullscreen are running at 800*600, I searched in the games' file a way to change de screen resolution, but I failed. Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance for your answers ! |

A few of my favorite questions first, is your game installed correctly, and have you installed the Creatures Remaster patch? Those two probably won't help your performance issues, but I just like asking that question.
Press control+shift+P to get the performance monitor thing. I also made a screenshot cause that make it easier to explain, and the arrow is pointing at the performance monitor itself. The top number is a better indicator of how well your game is running then the wolfling monitor's frame count. It should stay around 0.8-1.1 if your world has agents and Creatures in it. The bottom number is how many agents are currently in the world. If the top number is below 1 then your game is running perfectly. If it hovers around 1, but goes past it sometimes, I wouldn't add anymore agents. If it's up past 1 then your game is running slower then it should. For example, I loaded up C1toDS with around 25 Norns, and mine runs around 0.6-0.8. C1toDS is sort of an intense room to use though, and I found I couldn't run it on my five year old laptop with more then 15 Norns in the world.
How do you speed up a world though? I'd like to know myself. If I find one of my worlds is running to slow, I just either cut back on the number of Norns, or delete the world and try not to add so many agents next time. Back when I was stuck on my laptop, I just sort of dealt with the lag, and didn't play the game that much because of the lag.
I have no idea about the fullscreen options. I don't run DS in fullscreen.

DinoFan137, Have you tried installing Vampess' Bramboo Fix for Docking Station? It fixes the bramboo script, which can cause worlds to slow down after a long time, |

The DS engine is very frame-rate inefficient. Its speed will largely depend on the sole processing power of ONE of your CPU's and your graphics processing unit.
There's really not a whole lot that can speed it up I'm afraid aside from sheer hardware power. Your CPU is 2.4Ghz standard as far as I can tell. That's decent but it's not doing Creatures any favors when Creatures came from a time when Intel 3.0 Ghz cores were standard in desktops. Your CPU can clock up to 3.4Ghz in Turbo, so don't think I'm downing your CPU, but see...Creatures doesn't know how to ask for that. :p Just like it doesn't know how to ask for the 4 discreet cores you have or the 8 threads...if it did you'd have no slowdowns at all.
Short of overclocking (not recommended on a laptop for heating reasons), I don't think you'll get a whole lot more out of it.
To answer your other question, yes. The frame-rate is capped at 20fps. |
